1) World
Environment Day observed: World Environment Day (WED) was observed across
the world on 5 June 2014. The day is observed every year to raise the awareness
around the globe for taking positive action to protect nature and planet earth.
Theme for 2014 is Small islands and climate change and slogan raise your voice
not the Sea level. World Environment Day was established by the United Nations
General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the
Human Environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same
day, led to the creation of UNEP.
2) Narendra
Modi picks Bhutan for first foreign visit: Keen to start his foreign tours
from the neighbourhood, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake his first
visit to Bhutan, the friendliest among all neighbouring countries, this month.
It is learnt that an official team will be leaving for Thimphu on Friday to set
up the visit and work out the relevant logistics. The visit is likely to take
place after the ongoing Parliament session, possibly in the third week of June.
The decision was taken over the past few
days during which Modi’s tour calendar was worked out.

Gandhi International Airport named world's second best airport for service
quality: For the third year in a
row, Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi has been adjudged the
second best airport in the world for its service quality among the airports
handling 25-40 million passengers per annum (MPPA). Mumbai's Chhatrapati
Shivaji International Airport was placed at the fifth position in this category
by the Airport Council International (ACI). ACI is a global body of airports
which represents their interests with governments and international
organisations. It covers 1,751 airports in 174 countries. However, in the
global ranking, IGI this year was placed at the sixth position against last
year's fourth.

the world's first robot that reads emotions: Japanese technology firm
Softbank has unveiled an amazing new gadget - Pepper the 'world's first robot
with a heart'. It can recognise and analyse gestures, expressions and tone of
voice through an artificial intelligence program, or 'emotional engine',
according to its makers. Softbank say that people could communicate with the
robot 'just like they would with friends and family' and that it can perform
various tasks.

Gadkari got additional charge of Union Ministry Rural Development: After
the sudden death of the Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde in a tragic
road accident on Tuesday, the President of India, as advised by the Prime
Minister, has directed that Shri Nitin Jairam Gadkari, Minister of Road
Transport & Highways and Shipping shall be given additional charge of the
Ministries of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water &
Sanitation.
In a tragic turn of events on Tuesday morning,
Union Minister for Rural Development Gopinath Munde died of multiple internal
injuries after his car was hit by another vehicle in Delhi.

Indian Army officer appointed member of UN panel on peacekeeping: A retired
Indian Army Lieutenant General has been appointed member of a UN expert panel
on peacekeeping that will advice the world body on how to use new technologies
and innovations in that field. Lieutenant General (retd) Abhijit Guha is part
of the five-member panel of experts appointed by under secretaries-general for
peacekeeping operations and for field support Herve Ladsous and Ameerah Haq.

elected to UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee on ICH: India has been
elected to the UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the
Intangible Cultural Heritage. India has been elected for the next four years
(2014-2018) to the Committee after winning the highest number of votes in the
elections held on Friday at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, an official statement
said.

David Villa said he will retire from international duty after the World Cup in
Brazil, in an interview broadcast on Wednesday.

to become country’s first green hospital: The All India Institute of
Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi is all set to become the country’s first
‘green hospital’ with Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Harsh
Vardhan announcing his Ministry’s ‘green-plan’ for medical institutions across
the country. Speaking at a symposium on ‘Impact of Environment on Health’
organised at Vigyan Bhavan on Thursday, Dr. Vardhan said: “It is our plan to
“green” AIIMS and we are determined to showcase our commitment to fight climate
change. For this to happen, the country’s premier medical facility should move
away from using conventional energy that is responsible for polluting
environment and adding to the green house gases.’’.
Kudankulam nuclear power plant first in the country to reach full capacity of 1000MW
>> The unit 1 of the Kudankulam
nuclear power plant (KNPP) has reached full capacity generation of 1000MW on
Saturday.
>> The Russian-designed Voda Voda
Energo Reactor (VVER) achieved the final milestone nearly eight months after
power generated at the plant was connected to the grid.
>> This is the first nuclear power
plant in the country to touch 1000MW of power generation.
>. "At exactly 1.20pm on Saturday,
power generation in the unit 1 of the plant touched 1000MW. The unit will
continue to generate 1000MW for nearly a day. Subsequently, we will scale down
generation to 900MW as per the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB)
stipulations," site director R S Sundar said.

will generate less than 1000MW and after some dynamic tests are conducted, the
plant will apply for permission from the AERB to maintain the power generation
at 1000MW.

"The formal commissioning will be decided by the Nuclear Power
Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) authorities after we maintain the
generation at 1000MW continuously for a specified period," said Sundar.
>> The final milestone should have
been reached a few days earlier but for the shutdown in unit 1 due to some
technical problems. For nearly 10 days the unit was not generating power and it
was re-started only on June 4.

1) 16th
Lok Sabha met for the first time: The 16 Lok Sabha met for the first time
on Wednesday but adjourned almost immediately as a mark of respect to Union
Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde who died in a car accident in the
Capital on Tuesday. With Munde’s death casting a shadow on the day’s
proceedings, applause was muted when Prime Minister Narendra Modi walked into
the House for the first time ever just before the Lok Sabha was convened.
Before he took his place reserved for the Leader of the House, Mr. Modi --
escorted by Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu – walked across
the floor to greet seniors from his own party and also the Opposition. The
House was soon called to order by pro tem Speaker Kamal Nath and proceedings
began with the observance of a minute’s silence to mark the solemnity of the
first sitting of the 16 Lok Sabha. Lok Sabha Secretary-General P. Sreedharan
tabled the list of elected members submitted by the Election Commission.

Nath sworn-in as Protem Speaker of Lok Sabha: Senior Congress leader Kamal
Nath was on Wednesday sworn-in as the Protem Speaker of the newly constituted
Lok Sabha by President Pranab Mukherjee. 67-year-old Nath, a nine-term MP, was
administered the oath at a simple function in the Rashtrapati Bhavan which was
attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice-President Hamid Ansari,
Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Minister of State
(Parliamentary Affairs) Santosh K Gangwar.
Know pro-tem Speaker?
Pro-tem speaker is mainly an operating and
temporary speaker. To conduct the works in the centre or in state legislatives,
pro-tem speaker is appointed for a limited time period. Generally in such a
condition when the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies have been elected, but
the vote for the speaker and deputy speaker has not taken place, the pro-tem
speaker is chosen. Pro-tem speaker is chosen with the agreement of the members
of the Lok Sabha and legislative assembly, so that he can carry on the
activities till the permanent speaker is not chosen.
3) India
became the second largest exporter of textiles in the world: UN Comtrade:
India is now the world's second largest textile exporter after China. China
still maintains a heavy lead over India with its trade volume being almost 7
times as high. The data, released by the Apparel Export Promotion Council,
states that over 55% of global trade relates to readymade garments. Italy,
Germany and Bangladesh secured third, fourth and fifth ranks respectively.

MP Sumitra Mahajan tipped to be next Lok Sabha Speaker: Senior BJP leader
and eight-time Member of Parliament from Indore Sumitra Mahajan is most likely
to take over as the next Speaker of the Lok Sabha, reports said on Wednesday. The
election of the new Speaker will be held on Friday. If elected, Sumitra Mahajan
will be only the second woman Speaker ever. Meira Kumar, who presided over the
House for the last five years, was the first woman to grace the chair of Lok
Sabha Speaker.
5) Syrian President Bashar al-Assad re-elected:
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has won a third term in office after securing
88.7% of votes in Tuesday's presidential election, the parliamentary speaker
has announced. Earlier, Syria's Supreme Constitutional Court put the turnout at
73.47%. Voting took place in government-controlled areas, but not in parts of
the north and east held by rebels. Tens of thousands of people have died in
three years of civil war in Syria, with millions more displaced. President
Assad's sole challengers, Hassan al-Nouri and Maher Hajjar, received 4.3% and
3.2% of the vote respectively.d
