Mars Orbiter Mission: India becomes first country to enter Mars orbit in maiden attempt
24.9.14
Achievements, Current Affairs, First in India, Narendra Modi PM of India, September 2014
No comments
>> Creating history, ISRO's Mars
Orbiter Mission (MOM) on Wednesday successfully entered the orbit of the red
planet. With this, India has become the first nation in the world to have
entered the Mars orbit in the first attempt. ISRO's MOM is also the cheapest
such mission till now.
>> Indian Space Research
Organisation's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) spacecraft started orbiting the red
planet at 7.47am, but it was only 12 minutes later —because of a time delay in
radio signals travelling the 680 million km -- that scientists at Isro
Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network in Bangalore, could erupt in joy as
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stood a happy witness.
>> The scientists had waited for more
than 300 days as MOM journeyed on through space, but the last 54 minutes were
virtually unbearable. For, it was during this period that the orbiter first
reoriented itself and then fired its engine and thrusters for about 24 minutes
to get into the Mars orbit.
>> Prime Minister Narendra Modi
congratulated the Isro scientists over the success. "MOM never
disappoints," he told applauding scientists at the Isro Telemetry,
Tracking and Command Network in Bangalore. "India is the first country to
get this right in the first attempt," he said.
>> With MOM successfully entering the
red planet's orbit, ISRO on Wednesday also launched the MOM's official Twitter
handle, @MarsOrbiter.
>> With the success of Mars Orbiter
Mission (MOM), India has joined the United States, European Space Agency and
the former Soviet Union in the elite club of Martian explorers.
>> Interestingly, India's MOM is also
the world's cheapest inter-planetary mission costing around Rs 450 crores or 74
million USD, which is a tenth of NASA's Mars mission MAVEN that entered the
Martian orbit on September 22.
>> It aims to study Mars' surface and
mineral composition, and scan its atmosphere for methane with the help of
scientific instruments.

Kudankulam nuclear power plant first in the country to reach full capacity of 1000MW
>> The unit 1 of the Kudankulam
nuclear power plant (KNPP) has reached full capacity generation of 1000MW on
Saturday.
>> The Russian-designed Voda Voda
Energo Reactor (VVER) achieved the final milestone nearly eight months after
power generated at the plant was connected to the grid.
>> This is the first nuclear power
plant in the country to touch 1000MW of power generation.
>. "At exactly 1.20pm on Saturday,
power generation in the unit 1 of the plant touched 1000MW. The unit will
continue to generate 1000MW for nearly a day. Subsequently, we will scale down
generation to 900MW as per the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB)
stipulations," site director R S Sundar said.
>> In the coming days, the unit 1
will generate less than 1000MW and after some dynamic tests are conducted, the
plant will apply for permission from the AERB to maintain the power generation
at 1000MW.
>>
"The formal commissioning will be decided by the Nuclear Power
Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) authorities after we maintain the
generation at 1000MW continuously for a specified period," said Sundar.
>> The final milestone should have
been reached a few days earlier but for the shutdown in unit 1 due to some
technical problems. For nearly 10 days the unit was not generating power and it
was re-started only on June 4.

Country's first Post Office Savings Bank ATM opened in Chennai
>> The country's first Post Office
Savings Bank ATM was inaugurated in Chennai on Thursday by Finance Minister P
Chidambaram as part of the government's Rs 4,909 crore IT modernisation scheme for
the Department of Posts.
>> After launching the ATM service at
Thiyagaraya Nagar Head Post Office (HPO), Chidambaram said that Rs 4,909 crore
had been allocated for the IT modernisation of Department of Posts in the
interim budget for 2014-15. "The IT modernisation scheme is aimed at
making Department of Posts a completely technology-oriented one and today's
initiative is a step in that regard," he said.
>> The IT modernisation scheme would
cover 1.55 lakh Post offices and would be implemented by next year, he added.
Speaking about the newly launched ATM service at the HPO, Chidambaram said that
while it will initially operate in a closed environment for about six months,
it will later change to 'inter-operability,' on the lines of bank ATMs, allowing
customers to withdraw money from any ATM.
>> About Department of Posts,
Chidambaram said that while questions were being raised about its future,
especially in the wake of dip in use of letters and postcards, it was adopting
new strategies and was therefore on the growth path.
>>
Still a large number of people believe that Department of Posts is the
best in courier and parcel delivery areas, he added. An official release said
the T Nagar HPO ATM is the first in the country and "four more ATMs are
ready for operations" in Delhi and Mumbai. "It is proposed to install
1,000 ATMs across the country in 2014.
>> Another 1,800 ATMs will be added
in 2015," it said. It added that Rs 700 crore has been earmarked for
implementing Core Banking Solution (CBS) for Post office Savings Bank.
>> As on date, 51 HPOs and 11
Sub-post offices have "migrated" covering 64 lakh accounts. By March
31, 2014, a total of 700 more post offices will be covered and all 26,840 post
offices will be functional under CBS in another two years, it said.
