Know about INS Kochi, Largest Indian made warship

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on 29 September 2015 commissioned naval warship INS Kochi, the stealth guided missile destroyer, at the naval dockyard in Mumbai. Here are the important things you should know about INS Kochi.

1) INS Kochi is the largest India-made warship.

2) The warship is designed by the Navy's in-house organisation, directorate of naval design, and it is constructed by Mazagon Dock Ship builders Ltd in Mumbai.

3) It has displacement of 7,500 tons and it is 164 metres in length and 17 metres at the beam.

4) The ship is propelled by four gas turbines and designed to achieve speeds in excess of 30 knots.

5) The ship has a complement of about 40 officers and 350 sailors.

6) Destroyer INS Kochi has the motto: Jahi Shatrun Mahabaho (Armed to conquer the enemy)!

7) INS Kochi is packed with an array of state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, with a significant indigenous component.

8) The 7,500-tonne INS Kochi, the second of the three Kolkata-class destroyers being built at Mazagaon Docks (MDL) at Mumbai for over Rs 4,000 crore apiece, is the 10th destroyer in India's combat fleet.

9) The first of this class, INS Kolkata, was commissioned in August last year.

10) The third warship, INS Chennai, will be inducted towards end-2016.

  4. INS Kochi, largest India-made warship, commissioned:
    --> Naval warship INS Kochi, the largest-ever warship to be built in India, was commissioned by defence minister Manohar Parrikar at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.
    --> "Jahi Shatrun Mahabaho" loosely means "Armed to conquer the enemy" in Sanskrit.
    --> It's an apt motto for guided-missile destroyer INS Kochi, packed with weapons and sensors as well as advanced stealth features.
    --> The first of this class, INS Kolkata, was commissioned in August last year, while the third INS Chennai will be inducted towards end-2016.
  5. HSBC's Naina Lal Kidwai to Retire on December 31:
    --> After a 13 year stint with the British lender, HSBC India head Naina Lal Kidwai will retire by the end of this year, the bank said.
    --> Ms Kidwai, who had joined the bank from Morgan Stanley, has been working as the chairman of HSBC India and executive director on the board of HSBC Asia-Pacific.
    --> She took over as chief executive of HSBC India in 2007 and as chairman of HSBC India in 2009.

    --> India has moved up 16 positions to rank 55th on a global index of the world's most competitive economies, where Switzerland remains on top.

  2. RBI cuts repo rates by 50 basis points to 6.75%:
    --> Reserve Bank of India on 29 Sept. 2015 cut repo rate by 50 basis points to 6.75%; Cash reserve ratio remains unchanged at 4%; this fourth policy rate cut by RBI this year.
    --> RBI Governor Raghu Ram Rajan has kept CRR unchanged at 4 percent but has made headlines when he slashed policy rate by 0.5 percent to 4-year low of 6.75 percent which means repo rate -- the rate at which the central bank lends to banks -- has been cut by 100 basis points this year.
    --> The surprise move by RBI governor will spell cheer for consumers as it would lead to lower home, auto and other existing and new loans.
  3. NCC gets its name registered in Limca Book of Records:
    --> National Cadet Corps (NCC) on 29 Sept. 2015 was presented with the certificate of Limca Book of Records for the 'Largest Yoga performance’ simultaneously by a single uniformed youth organisation at multiple venues on International Day of Yoga.

    --> Bindra shot 208.8 points to clinch the gold while compatriots Gagan Narang and Chain Singh finished fourth and sixth respectively at the Karni Singh Shooting Range.

  1.  PSLV successfully launches ASTROSAT, six other satellites:
    --> Isro on 28 September 2015 successfully launched India's first astronomy satellite Astrosat, eleven years after the government cleared the project.
    --> Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C30) carrying Astrosat and six other satellites lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 10am.
    --> PSLV-C30 injected Astrosat and other satellites -- four US nano satellites, a microsatellite from Indonesia a nanosatellite from Canada - into their respective orbits.  --> This is the first time India is launching a US satellite.
    --> Astrosat, which had a lift-off mass of 1,513kg, will now embark on a five-year astronomy mission studying distant celestial objects.

  2. Sania and Hingis won 2015 Guangzhou Open women’s doubles title:
    --> Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have won women’s doubles title of 2015 Guangzhou Open Tennis Tournament.
    --> They defeated Chisese pair of Shilin Xu and Xiaodi You by 6-3, 6-1 score.
    --> It was overall seventh title of Sania Mirza in the 2015 season and sixth title with Martina Hingis.

    --> SEBI Chairman U K Sinha has said that the commodities market entities would get a time frame of up to one year to adjust to the new regulations.
    --> Whole-time member Rajeev Kumar Agarwal will oversee commodities market regulation in merged entity.

  6. Nation celebrated birthday of Shaheed Bhagat Singh:
    --> Nation celebrated the birthday of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, the man who sacrificed his life for India's freedom at the age of 23.
    --> Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered freedom fighter Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary during his address to the Indian diaspora at San Jose in California.
    --> Born in a Punjabi Sikh family in 1907 at Banga, Bhagat Singh was among the prominent revolutionaries who shaped the base of a grand national movement.

--> Syed Akbaruddin will take over as India’s permanent representative in the UN in New York.
--> He was a familiar face as MEA’s spokesperson.
--> Akbaruddin will replace Asoke Mukerji who will be retiring.

6) Government’s holding in IDBI Bank to be reduced to 49%:
--> The government has firmed up plans to bring down its holding in IDBI Bank to 49 per cent, marking a big bang start to its commitment to reform state-run banks.
--> The IDBI Bank was established in 1964 by an Act of Parliament to provide credit and other financial facilities for the development of the fledgling Indian industry.

7) Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis won 2015 Guangzhou Open women’s doubles title:
--> Indo-Swiss tennis pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have won women’s doubles title of 2015 Guangzhou Open Tennis Tournament.

--> Manipur Governor Dr Syed Ahmad passed away in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
--> He was sworn in as the 16th Governor of Manipur in May 2015.

--> A first of its kind conference on the contemporary relevance of the Bhagvad Gita was held London, United Kingdom.
--> The conference was organised by Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and High Commission of India.
