1) Seventh phase of Lok Sabha elections held: Moderate to high turnout marked the polling on Wednesday in the seventh phase of Lok Sabha elections on a day when Narendra Modi sparked a major controversy by violating the election law by making a speech and displaying BJP's poll symbol in a booth. The fate of some of the top guns of Congress, including Sonia Gandhi, and BJP like Modi, L K Advani, Rajnath Singh and Murli Manohar Joshi and Arun Jaitley were decided in the seventh round that covered 89 constituencies across seven states and two union territories.

2) Real Madrid rout Bayern Munich to reach Champions League final: Real Madrid reached their first Champions League final for 12 years with an historic 4-0 win at Bayern Munich in Tuesday's semifinal, second leg to knock the holders out. Having won last week's first leg 1-0 in Madrid, Real won the semifinal 5-0 on aggregate as Pep Guardiola's Bayern suffered their heaviest home defeat in European competition.

3) UAE leg of IPL 2014 ends: Kieron Pollard’s valiant half-century went in vain as Sunrisers Hyderbad registered a 15-run victory over Mumbai Indians in a Pepsi IPL 2014 match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday night. It also marked the end of IPL matches in UAE, which hosted 20 successful matches in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. The tournament will now return to India.

4) BHEL to set up solar power plant in Yemen: Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) has signed an agreement with Yemen’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy for setting up solar photovoltaic (PV)-based power plants at different locations in the Gulf nation. The agreement was signed by BHEL Chairman and Managing Director B. Prasada Rao and Yemen’s Minister of Electricity and Energy Saleh Hassan Sumie.

5) British actor Bob Hoskins died: British actor Bob Hoskins, whose varied career ranged from “Mona Lisa” to “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” has died aged 71. A family statement released on Wednesday by publicist Clair Dobbs said Hoskins died in a hospital after a bout of pneumonia.

6) Switzerland, Norway are world's most expensive economies: Switzerland and Norway are the world's most expensive economies, followed by Bermuda, Australia and Denmark, according to a new ranking by the World Bank. The economies with the lowest prices are Egypt, Pakistan, Myanmar, Ethiopia and Laos, according to a review of economic data which seeks to compensate for exchange rate effects and measure spending power across countries.


7) Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks Lionel Messi's Champions League Goal Record: Cristiano Ronaldo has broken Lionel Messi's all-time record for the most goals in a single Champions League season after notching his 15th score. The Portuguese superstar, who remained on 14 strikes before the semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich, scored in the 33rd minute to surpass a record set by Milan's Jose "Mazzola" Altafini in the 1962-63 season and equalled by Messi in 2011-12.

1) NTT DoCoMo to exit India, unload entire stake in Tata Teleservices: NTT DoCoMo plans to exit Tata Teleservices by selling its 26.5% stake in the joint venture with Tata Group, the second high-profile pullout from India announced by a Japanese company this month after multibillion-dollar investments failed to bring the returns they'd expected. Japan's No. 1 telecom operator said Friday its agreement with the Tata Group allows it to exit Tata Teleservices by the end of June if the venture missed some performance targets agreed upon initially.

2) Centre recommended AP House dissolution: The Union Cabinet on Friday recommended dissolution of the Andhra Pradesh state Assembly and extension of President’s rule beyond April 30. The decision of the Cabinet is a mere technicality as Central rule in a state expires automatically if it is not ratified by Parliament within a period of two months. The dissolution of the Assembly paves way for extension of President’s rule. Since the general election process is underway and another three phases of Lok Sabha polls are due, it was not feasible for the government to take the Parliament route to obtain the ratification. Andhra Pradesh was placed under Central rule on March 1 after the resignation of the then Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy in protest against the Union Government’s decision to bifurcate the state.

3) Facebook launched Newswire for journalists: Facebook has launched FB Newswire, with the aim to make it easier for journalists and newsrooms to find, share and embed newsworthy content from the popular social networking website in their work. The FB Newswire is a Facebook page of hand-selected and journalist-verified news stories from across Facebook's platform, according to Andy Mitchell, director of news and global media partnerships at Facebook.

4) Narendra Modi, Arvind Kejriwal and Arundhati Roy among Time's 100 influential people: Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal have made it to Time 100 list of the world's most influential people along with Indian novelist Arundhati Roy. While Modi figures in the category of "leaders", Kejriwal is listed among the "pioneers" and Roy makes the grade among "icons" in the annual list released Thursday after an online poll of readers.

5) Abhinav Bindra to lead Indian challenge in CWG 2014: Former World and Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra, who won the national air rifle championship and sparkled in the two selection trials, will spearhead the Indian challenge in shooting in the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow, from July 23 to August 3.

6) Former Barcelona coach Vilanova died: Former Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova died on Friday at the age of 45 after a long fight with cancer, the club announced, plunging the sporting world into mourning. Vilanova lost his battle with a cancer of the salivary gland that was diagnosed more than two years ago, forcing him to step down as Barcelona boss last July. 

7) PV Sindhu entered Badminton Asia Championship semis: World No. 10 P.V. Sindhu won her quarterfinal match to proceed to the women's singles semi-finals of the $200,000 Badminton Asia Championships at the Gimcheon Indoor Stadium, South Korea. 

8) Manmohan’s younger brother joined BJP: In a major embarrassment to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his younger brother Daljeet Singh Kohli joined the BJP on Friday. Amid cheers, Mr. Kohli was welcomed by the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, who hugged him. He was presented a siropa (robes of religious honour) in the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and BJP’s Amritsar candidate Arun Jaitley.

9) Indian Squash Player Saurav Ghosal won Dato Alex Lee Award 2013: Saurav Ghosal the famous Indian squash player won Dato Alex Lee Award 2013 for contributing as the best and outstanding squash player though out the year fo 2013. Saurav Ghoshal name has been selected by Asian Squash Federation (ASF).


10) Biocon elevated Arun Chandavarkar as CEO and joint MD: Bangalore-based biotechnology company Biocon Ltd has elevated Arun Suresh Chandavarkar as chief executive officer (CEO) and joint managing director (MD) of the company, as per a stock market disclosure.

1) Nokia to name India-born Rajeev Suri as next CEO: Nokia, which is set to close the sale of its phone business to Microsoft, will on Tuesday name Rajeev Suri as its next CEO and outline its new strategy with a focus on its networks equipment business, a newspaper said on Friday. Citing unnamed sources, daily Helsingin Sanomat said Nokia would also on Tuesday, along with its first-quarter results, announce how much cash it would pay out to shareholders. 


2) Sixth Phase of Lok Sabha Elections in 117 seats held: The sixth phase of polling for the Lok Sabha elections ended in 117 seats in 11 states and a Union Territory on Thursday with more than average polling in Tamil Nadu (39 seats) and low turnouts in Maharashtra (19 seats), Uttar Pradesh (12 seats), Madhya Pradesh (10 seats) and Rajasthan (five seats).

3) Suresh Kumar Reddy appointed as the First ambassador to ASEAN: Union Ministry of External Affairs (MoEA) on 23 April 2014 appointed Suresh Kumar Reddy as India's first Ambassador to the separate Indian Mission to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) & East Asia Summit. He is expected to take up his assignment shortly. He is currently working as the Ambassador of India to Iraq.

4) Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag's name forwarded for new Army chief: Notwithstanding objections by BJP, the Defence Ministry is going ahead with the process of appointing the new Army Chief and has recommended the name of Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag to the Prime Minister's Office.

5) Sunil Lamba likely to be Vice Chief of Navy: Vice Admiral Sunil Lamba, commandant of National Defence College, is expected to be appointed as Vice Chief of Naval Staff as part of a major rejig being undertaken at the top level in the maritime force.

6) Indian-born Google+ chief Vivek Gundotra quits: Vivek Gundotra, chief of Google’s social networking venture Google+, is leaving the Internet company after nearly eight years. Mr. Gundotra, who was serving as the Senior Vice President (Social) at Google, announced his departure in a post on Google+, a social network that was created about three years ago.


7) Delhi Airport to Become Zero Diversionary Airport: The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi will soon become a zero diversionary airport when the recommendations of a committee, set up by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in January this year, are implemented. The centre had constituted a committee to suggest steps to prevent flight diversion during winter due to fog. Last winter, passengers had suffered a harrowing time as dense fog canceled and delayed many a flights transiting from the capital. It will be achieved through procedural and logistical upgradation.

1) World Book and Copyright Day observed: World Book and Copyright Day was observed on 23rd April across the world to raise importance of books and promote reading, publishing and copyright.  World Book Day was celebrated for the first time on 23 April 1995. 23 April is a symbolic date for world literature. It is on this date in 1616 that Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors, such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo.
>> It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those, who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. 

2) DGCA allows in-flight use of mobiles, laptops on flight mode: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Wednesday has lifted the ban on the use of personal electronic devices like cell phones at all times during a flight, provided they are used in a non-transmitting or "Airplane" mode. The regulator has amended the civil aviation requirements or CAR to bring it in line with regulations of the US' Federal Aviation Administration and European Union Aviation Safety Agency. The regulator added that the decision was taken after airlines raised the demand for letting passengers use cellphones and other devices during all phases of a flight in the flight/airplane mode.

3) Modi, Kejriwal become Time's 'most influential': A closely-watched TIME magazine poll of the 100 most-influential people in the world was flooded by around 5 million and 3 million votes respectively for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, dwarfing the votes received by others in the poll but also putting BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in the red with the largest proportion of ‘no’ votes. While the AAP leader has received 71.5 per cent ‘yes’ votes, the BJP prime ministerial candidate has the largest percentage of ‘no’ votes than any other personality in the running.

4) Lupita Nyong'o named People's most beautiful woman: It's been a big year for Lupita Nyong'o. After winning an Oscar and a lucrative advertising deal the actress was named on Wednesday as the world's most beautiful woman for 2014 by People magazine. Nyong'o, who took home this year's Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role as the slave Patsey in director Steve McQueen's acclaimed film 12 Years A Slave, said she "never dreamed" she would be praised for her looks and land on the cover of the weekly magazine.

5) Sri Lanka appointed Lasith Malinga as new T20 captain: ri Lanka has reportedly named star fast bowler Lasith Malinga as the new Twenty20 captain after sacking Dinesh Chandimal, although they have retained Angelo Mathews as the Test and one-day skipper.

6) WhatsApp now has half billion active users; 48 million in India alone: Popular messaging app WhatsApp has now crossed 500 million users. The company which was bought by Facebook in February this year  - for a gigantic amount of $19 billion – has been steadily adding to its growing list of users.

7) Supreme Court constituted a committee to prevent misuse of public money: Supreme Court constituted a committee to prevent misuse of public money by the Government for politically motivated advertisements in print and electronic media. The three-member committee, chaired by NR Madhava Menon, is mandated to frame guidelines and submit that within three months.

8) Benfica lifts the 33rd Portuguese Football league title by defeating the Olhanense by 2-0

9) Chitra Won World Women's Senior snooker title: Chitra Magimairaj showed tremendous grit and determination to pocket the Senior snooker title in her first appearance, in Leeds,UK, on Tuesday.


10) India successfully test fired indigenous Akash missile: India on Wednesday test fired its Akash surface-to-air missile from a defence base in Odisha. The indigenously developed missile, with a 27-km range and an effective ceiling of 15 km, was test fired from the Integrated Test Range of Chandipur in the coastal district of Balasore.

1) World Earth Day Observed: April 22nd, 2014 is the 44th anniversary of Earth Day, an occasion for people to celebrate and raise awareness of the nature. It was founded by the US senator Gaylord Nelson as an environment teach-in held on this day in 1970. With over 20 thousand partners and organisations in 190 countries, more than 1 billion people has participated in Earth Day activities, making it the largest secular civic event in the World. Earth day marks the beginning of the modern environmental movement.

2) TCS joins top 10 global IT services companies club: This is a landmark for Indian IT. The country's largest IT services provider, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has broken into the league of top 10 global IT services companies, moving from the 13th position in 2012 to the 10th spot in 2013.

3) India to host World Bridge Championships Next Year: India will host the 2015 World Bridge Championships, said Bridge Federation of India president N.R. Kirubakara Moorthy in a release. The World Bridge Federation Council at its meeting in Dallas, US, on March 22, unanimously decided to award the Sep 26-Oct 10 event to Chennai. Over 800 players from 30 countries are expected to participate in these championships which India will be hosting for the first time.


4) Rani Mukerji, Aditya Chopra tie the knot: Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji and filmmaker Aditya Chopra have tied the knot in a quiet ceremony in Italy, ending years of speculation about their relationship. The couple, who have been dating for several years, married on Monday night in the Italian countryside.

5) 11th National Youth Athletics Championships: Goa Athletic Association in collaboration with Athletics Federation of India and Sports Authority of Goa has organised the 11th National Youth Athletic Championship for boys and girls at Bambolim Athletic Stadium from April 20 to 22.

6) Manchester United sacked David Moyes, install Ryan Giggs as interim manager: Veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs has been appointed interim manager of Manchester United following the sacking of David Moyes. United sacked Moyes just 10 months after he succeeded Alex Ferguson at the helm of one of the world's most famous clubs. Giggs, 40, made his United debut in March 1991 and has made a record 962 appearances for the club, winning 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, four FA Cups, four League Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup.

7) RBI for two-stage verification for online banking transactions: Worried over rising number of frauds in online banking, the RBI has suggested that banks introduce two-stage authentication to ensure security of transactions. The RBI report on 'Enabling Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) in Payment System Applications' said banks should also inform customers about risks associated with different types of online banking transaction.

8) Motorola Mobility appointed Amit Boni as general manager of India: Motorola Mobility Tuesday named Amit Boni as general manager of India as the handset maker tries to regain a foothold in a market where it was a large player till some years back, chose to withdraw operations in August 2012 and re-entered late last year.

9) Pakistan tests Ghaznavi missile: Pakistan on Tuesday conducted a successful training launch of the short range surface-to-surface ballistic missile Hatf III (Ghaznavi), which can carry nuclear and conventional warheads to a range of 290 km.

10) Mathangi Sathyamurthy to receive M S Subbulakshmi Award 2014: Mathangi Sathyamurthy, Karnataka musician was selected for M S Subbulakshmi Award 2014. It was announced by the M S Subbulakshmi Foundation on 19 April 2014. She will receive a cash award of 10001 rupees and a plaque. The awards will be presented to her on 2 May 2014.


11) Thousands bid farewell to Garcia Marquez: Thousands of mourners queued up on Monday in Mexico City’s Palacio de Bellas Artes to bid farewell to Nobel Prize-winning Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The writer, 87, died on Thursday at his home in the Mexican capital. Escorted by a ceremonial guard, Garcia Marquez’s ashes were carried into the palace’s main lobby by his wife, Mercedes Barcha, and his sons Rodrigo and Gonzalo. A long red carpet and a large photo of the author decorated the building for the occasion.

1) Bengaluru FC crowned I-League champions in debut season: Bengaluru FC etched their names in the annals of Indian football history, beating Dempo 2-4 at the Nehru Stadium in Margao on Monday to be crowned the kings of the I-League in their debut season. Needing a win to snatch the title ahead of other established teams, Bengaluru led from start to finish. They scored through Sean Rooney (2nd), Robin Singh (56th), John Menyongar (79th) and captain Sunil Chhetri (90+7). Dempo reduced the margin through Roberto Silva (82nd) and substitute Romeo Fernandes (89th). After Sean Rooney had given them a dream start in the second minute, there was no looking back.

2) First woman chief justice of Delhi HC takes oath: Justice G Rohini was sworn in as the first woman Chief Justice of the Delhi high court on Monday. Justice Rohini (58) was earlier a judge at Andhra Pradesh high court. She succeeds Justice N V Ramana who was elevated to the Supreme Court in February. Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed has been the acting chief justice at Delhi HC since then. LG Najeeb Jung administered the oath of office to Justice Rohini. 

3) Harendra Singh appointed junior hockey team's coach: Hockey India on Monday appointed former senior coach Harendra Singh as the coach of the junior men's team to groom it for the 2016 World Cup to be held in the country.
Harendra will join the training camp of the team on April 25. "The appointment of Harendra Singh is in line with our efforts to prepare Junior Hockey Men team for the 2016 World Cup to be hosted in India," Hockey India Secretary Narinder Batra said. He will work with other coach BJ Kariappa.

4) Shaik Abdul Hameed won the 2014 Thailand Tour title of Asian Bowling Federation: Shaik Abdul Hameed of India won the 2014 Thailand Tour title of Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) on 17 April 2014 at Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl Ratchayothinon in Bangkok, Thailand. With this Hameed became the first Indian to win the title of ABF. Hameed defeated Mahamood Al Attar of UAE 242-183 in the final.

5) Meb Keflezighi wins Boston Marathon: Meb Keflezighi became the first US male athlete to win Boston Marathon in 3 decades, the first running of the race since last year's fatal bombing attack.


6) Cadbury India changes name to Mondelez India Foods: Cadbury India Limited on Monday announced it has changed its name to Mondelez India Foods Limited. The company, however, clarified that the move will have no impact on product names or brands. “The change in name of the company will have no impact on the names or packaging of its popular products like Cadbury Dairy Milk, 5 Star, Gems, Bournville, Perk, Celebrations, Choclairs, Halls, Bournvita, Tang and Oreo, which will continue to be sold under the same brand names as before,” the company said.The change of name is in line with the gradual changeover of the name of all subsidiaries of Mondelez International globally.

7) TCS and Mitsubishi to merge Japanese IT subsidiaries: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), on Monday, announced that it signed definitive agreements with Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) to merge its subsidiary TCS Japan with MC’s 100 per cent IT subsidiary IT Frontier Corporation (ITF) and Nippon TCS Solution Centre to create a new single entity. 8) Nokia-Microsoft deal to be completed this Friday: U.S software giant Microsoft, on Monday, said that it expected its deal to acquire Nokia’s phone unit, which has been delayed due to a number of regulatory and tax issues, to close on Friday. The announcement, however, has no mention of Nokia’s Chennai plant, which has been blocked from being part of the deal after becoming the focal point of two separate tax disputes.


9) Ila Patnaik appointed principal economic advisor in FinMin: Noted economist Ila Patnaik has been appointed principal economic advisor in the Union finance ministry. Her appointment comes at a time when the Centre is working as a caretaker government and the Opposition has approached the Election Commission over appointment of the new Navy chief. Officials played down the issue, saying Patnaik’s appointment was a routine matter and did not need the Election Commission’s nod. Patnaik is replacing Dipak Dasgupta who completed his tenure a few months ago. Patnaik, a prolific writer on economic issues, is currently Reserve Bank of India chair professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), a government funded think tank.\

11) Supreme Court revokes ban on iron ore mining in Goa: The Supreme Court on Monday revoked its 19-month-old ban on iron ore mining in Goa but restricted the extraction to 20 million tonnes per annum. A Bench comprising Justices AK Patnaik, SS Nijjar and FMI Kalifulla, however, said the expert panel will give a final recommendation on the annual cap on excavation of iron ore within six months. It said there cannot be a deemed renewal of lease after 2007 of the existing lease deeds emanating from 1962.


12) Reserve Bank of India's executive director G. Gopalakrishna takes VRS, joins as CAFRAL director:  Gopalakrishna, Reserve Bank of India's executive director, who was superseded for deputy governor's post, has voluntarily retired from his post. He has taken charge as the director of the Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning ( CAFRAL), a fledgling research body, from April 21, according to a statement from the central bank. His term was to end in a few months.
