1) 'Beatriz's War' wins Golden Peacock at IFFI: East Timor’s Beatriz’s War won the top Golden Peacock Award at the 44th International Film Festival of India, which ended on Saturday evening. The prize carries a cash component of Rs. 40 lakhs. India’s Kaushik Ganguly walked away with the Best Director honour for Apu’s Song, a Silver Peacock and Rs. 15 lakhs. Israel’s Alon Moni Aboutboul won the Best Actor Award (Silver Peacock and Rs. 10 lakhs) for his performance in A Place in Heaven, while the Best Actress Prize was awarded to Poland's Magdalena Boczarska (Silver Peacock, Rs. 10 lakhs) in In Hiding. Governor of Goa Shri Bharat Veer Wanchoo, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Shri Manish Tewari, Chief Minister of Goa, Shri Manohar Parrikar, many International and Bollywood personalities including Asha Parekh, Rohit Shetty, Jimmy Shergil and Deepshikha were also present at the closing ceremony. 4) China to launch its first moon rover mission next week: China will launch its first ever mission to land an unmanned spacecraft on the lunar surface next week, as it moves forward in its ambitious plan to become the world’s pre-eminent space power. The Chang’e-3 moon rover will be launched at 1:30 a.m. on Monday from Xichang Satellite Launch Center, the mission’s launching headquarters said.

9) SBI will raise Rs 9,576 crore to meet loan book surge and Basel-III norms: Expecting a surge in its loan book and to meet Basel-III norms, State Bank of India proposes to raise Rs 9,576 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) or a Follow-on Public Offering (FPO).

10) Punching PIN must for debit card transactions from Dec 1: Debit card holders will be required to punch in their PIN numbers every time they use the card, a move aimed at minimising frauds from December 1, 2013. In June, the Reserve Bank had extended the deadline for implementation of mandatory PIN punching at Point-of-Sales (PoS) and merchant outlets till November 30 following representation of banks.

11) Diesel costlier by 50 paise/litre: The diesel price has been revised upwards by 50 paise a litre, excluding State levies, effective Saturday/Sunday midnight. Last, it was revised by similar amount on October 31. After the current increase, the gap between selling price and market price of diesel (commonly known as under recovery) would be Rs. 9.99/litre. In January, the Government allowed public sector oil marketing companies (IOC, BPCL and HPCL) to increase diesel price in small doses to sync it with market price.

14) Generation from Kudankulam plant touches 400 MW: Power generation from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) has touched 400 MW, a top official said. The 1000 MW capacity first unit of the Indo-Russian joint venture began power generation on October 22 producing 160 MW, which was subsequently raised to 280 MW.

1) Mars orbiter to leave Earth's orbit after midnight:  If things go as planned by ISRO, India’s Mars orbiter craft would leave the Earth’s sphere of influence (SOI) shortly after midnight on Saturday on a nearly 300-day voyage in deep space to the red planet after the “most important” manoeuvre of the ambitious mission.

2) Honorary doctorate conferred on Aung San Suu Kyi : Nobel Prize winner and Myanmar’s Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been awarded honorary doctorate by the Canberra-based Australian National University. Suu Kyi received a standing ovation as she accepted a Doctorate of Letters for her outstanding contributions to the service of society yesterday, according to Australian Broadcasting Corporation report.

3) Gen Sharif assumed charge as Pak Army chief: Career infantry officer Gen Raheel Sharif, considered to be a moderate and an old India hand, on Friday took over the command of the 600,000-strong Pakistan Army from Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. Gen Kayani, the longest serving Army chief under a civilian government, passed the baton of command to 57-year-old Gen Sharif at an impressive ceremony held at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. Gen Sharif was chosen by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as the 15th chief of the Pakistan Army on Wednesday.

4) Maharashtra to have 5th tiger reserve in Nagzira: Maharashtra will soon have its fifth tiger reserve in Nagzira following approval from the National Tiger Conservation Authority. The Nagzira tiger reserve — between Bhandara and Gondia districts — would be home to surplus tigers from Tadoba, Principal Secretary (Forests), Praveen Pardeshi, told reporters.

5) Over 80 injured in Hong Kong ferry accident: A high-speed ferry heading from Hong Kong to Macau hit an unidentified object off an outlying island in the wee hours on Friday, leaving 85 people injured, authorities and the ferry company said.

6) World’s oldest bank okays revamp plans: The board of troubled Italian lender Monte dei Paschi di Siena — the world’s oldest bank — approved a restructuring plan which it said will create a “profoundly different” bank by 2017. The plan, which includes significant job and branch cuts and the sale of small subsidiaries, had been given the green light yesterday by the European Commission.

7) Cabinet meet on Telangana on Dec 3: Shinde- A special meeting of the Union Cabinet on December 3 will discuss the report of the Group of Ministers (GoM) set up to look into the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, and the draft Telangana Bill, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said on Friday.

9) Google has set up election portal in India: Google on 28 November 2013 setup an election portal in India, the largest democracy of the world. The portal will provide polls and politics related news to users in India. The launched search engine will also provide information on the political parties. 

10) Tata DoCoMo unveils Wi-Fi device: Tata DoCoMo has launched Photon Max Wi-Fi, a product that helps users create their own Wi-Fi Zone anywhere and access the Internet through a laptop, desktop, tablet or phone.

11) Inflation-linked bonds coming in December: To encourage people to invest more of their savings into financial products, the RBI said that it will launch a consumer price index-linked savings product in late December. The interest on the savings will be payable in two parts. There will be a fixed component of 1.5 per cent and a variable component based on the prevailing consumer price index-based (CPI) inflation.

12) Assault at ATM: Bank union asks RBI to scrap ‘white-label’ model- Following the recent attack on a woman at an ATM in Bangalore, the Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) has urged the RBI to drop its plan for ‘white-label ATMs’ that would be operated and maintained by private agencies.

13) Law intern names Justice Ganguly: The woman law intern has informed the three-judge panel that it was former Supreme Court Judge A.K. Ganguly who had allegedly sexually harassed her in December last.

1) Sachin Tendulkar becomes UNICEF's brand ambassador for South Asia: Recently-retired batting legend Sachin Tendulkar became UNICEF's first brand ambassador for South Asia and is all set to work in promoting hygiene and sanitation in the region.

2) Tehelka Managing Editor Shoma Chaudhary resigned: Under fire from various quarters, including the media fraternity, for the way she handled a junior colleague’s sexual harassment charge against founder-editor of Tehelka, Tarun Tejpal, Managing Editor Shoma Chaudhury decided to resign from the post early Thursday morning. She announced her decision to sign out from the weekly magazine through an e-mail to her colleagues.

3) Mahila Bank to open 16 more branches soon: Bharatiya Mahila Bank, the first all-woman bank, plans to open 16 more branches in the next four months. “We plan to add another 16 branches to our network in the next four months,” Mahila Bank Chairperson and Managing Director Usha Ananthasubramanian told PTI. Two branches would be inaugurated as early as first week of next month. These are Delhi and Indore branches, she added. New branches would be coming up in state capitals and Union territories.

4) Ronaldo goals lift Portugal to No. 5 in FIFA rankings: Cristiano Ronaldo's match-winning goals for Portugal in World Cup playoff matches against Sweden lifted his country to No. 5 in the monthly FIFA rankings.

5) Firoz Fatma becomes first woman 'crorepati' of KBC-7: Seventh season of the hit TV quiz show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' got its first female crorepati in the young Firoz Fatma from Uttar Pradesh. Hailing from Saharanpur in UP, the 22-year-old became the first woman to have won Rs one crore in this season of the game show hosted by megastar Amitabh Bachchan.

6) Hazare to observe indefinite fast for Lokpal Bill from Dec 10: Social activist Anna Hazare will launch an indefinite hunger strike for a strong Lokpal Bill from December 10.

7) SBT, SBI General Insurance ties up for affordable health plan: State Bank of Travancore (SBT) and SBI General Insurance today jointly launched an affordable health insurance plan for SBT customers. “SBI General Insurance and SBT today jointly announced the launch of SBI General’s Group Health Insurance Policy exclusively for SBT account holders and their families,” SBI General said in a release.

8) ICICI Bank’s Internet banking crashed for over 24 hours: For the first time, ICICI Bank’s Net banking services were disrupted for over 24 hours giving some anxious moments to customers. The disruption was noticed by customers on Wednesday afternoon when the portal remained stuck with a message that the facility was not available due to some maintenance work, without mentioning any timeframe for its restoration.

9)  TRAI finalizes tariff for mobile banking services:  The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), on Wednesday, released the tariff structure and guidelines for mobile banking services, a step that would help rural customers who do not have access to banks and financial services. The TRAI has prescribed a ceiling tariff for an outgoing unstructured supplementary service data (USSD)-based mobile banking service at Rs.1.50 per USSD session.

11) New insider trading norms in place in ten days: SEBI: To curb the growing menace of insider trading activities in the stock market, regulator SEBI will come up with a new set of norms within next ten days, Chairman U K Sinha said on Thursday.

12) India's GDP to grow at 5.4% in Q2 of FY'14: Assocham: A day ahead of the announcement of GDP figure for the July-September quarter of the current fiscal, industry body Assocham has pegged the country's growth at 5.4 per cent for the period on improved agricultural output.

13) Michelle Yeoh to be chief guest at 2013 IFFI closing ceremony: Malaysian-Chinese star Michelle Yeoh will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the festival this year. The 50-year-old actor played Aung San Suu Kyi in the biopic "The Lady" in 2011. This year, IFFI began Nov 20. It will conclude Saturday.


14) Mars mission’s D-day in three days: The first Indian Mars mission began its last orbit around the Earth on Wednesday morning, even as its controllers prepared for the big night three days away. On the night of November 30-December 1, the spacecraft will be finally thrust away from the Earth, and all the way towards the Red Planet, after gathering a total escape speed of around 11.4 kms a second.

1) India vs West Indies 3rd ODI: Dhawan powers India to series win- India on Wednesday clinched the ODI series against West Indies 2-1 with a comfortable five-wicket victory in the third and final match held in Kanpur, riding on Shikhar Dhawan’s sparkling century. Dhawan stole the limelight with an attacking 119 that came off 95 balls, his fifth ODI hundred, while Yuvraj Singh notched up a 74-ball 55 to seal the issue for the home side at the Green Park Stadium which was hosting an international game after a gap of nearly four years.

2) Tata Sons withdraws application for banking licence: Tata Sons Ltd has withdrawn its application for a new bank licence, according to the Reserve Bank of India. "The company has indicated that its current financial services operating model best supports the needs of the Tata Group’s domestic and overseas strategy, and provides adequate operating flexibility to its companies, while securing the interests of the group’s diverse stakeholder base," RBI said in a statement. Tata Sons in a statement said, "On a detailed evaluation of the 'Guidelines for Licensing of New Banks in the Private Sector' and analysis of clarifications thereto, Tata Sons has reached a conclusion…After prolonged deliberations and detailed analysis, Tata Sons has therefore decided to withdraw its application dated 1 July, 2013, from the current round of licensing."

3) TRAI prescribes tariff for service data-based mobile banking: Aiming to promote the use of mobile banking services across India, the telecom regulator TRAI has come out with guidelines and tariff on unstructured supplementary service data (USSD)-based mobile banking services. USSD technology is used by telecom operators to send alerts to their users. It can be used for pre-paid call-back services, location-based content services and menu-based information services. Some banks in the country, such as State Bank of India (SBI) and ICICI Bank have already launched USSD-based mobile banking services. However, the authority says the use of USSD-based mobile banking by these banks is at present limited to the provision of value-added banking services to their existing customers.

4) Hero group to open BML Munjal University: Hero Group today announced the opening of BML Munjal university, which will be a multi-disciplinary university located near Manesar, about 50 km from New Delhi. The first batch of students will be admitted in July next year. The university, spread across 5 lakh sq feet, will offer B. Tech, MBA and BBA in the first year. Hero Corporate Services Chairman, Sunil Kant Munjal, refused to share the details of the investment behind the initiative.

5) BlackBerry launched BBM channels: BlackBerry has launched BBM Channels, a forum for active, real conversations between people, brands and communities. The move is aimed at monetising the BlackBerry messaging platform by getting big brands to use it to network with users and potential consumers.

6) Govt invited applications for PFRDA chairperson post: Government has started the search for a successor to Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) Chairman, the post of which fell vacant following the resignation of Yogesh Agarwal. The tenure of the chairperson would be for five years or till the selected candidate attains the age of 65 years, the Finance Ministry said while inviting applications for the post. The pay and allowance of the new chairperson will be Rs 4.5 lakh per month without the facility of accommodation and car. The last date for applying for the post is December 27. At present, Joint Secretary in the Finance Ministry Anup Wadhawan is acting as the interim Chairman of the PFRDA. The post of Chairman fell vacant on November 13 following Agarwal’s resignation.

7) Raheel Sharif to be new Pak Army chief: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday appointed Lt Gen Raheel Sharif as Pakistan’s new Army Chief and Lt Gen Rashid Mehmood as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. Lt Gen Sharif will replace 61-year-old Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani who would hang his boots on Friday after being at the helm of the Army for six years.

8) Punjab to host World Cup Kabaddi next week:  The 4th World Cup Kabaddi, circle style, will be held in Punjab from Saturday next week to 14th of next month.


9) Pakistan Launched Construction of Country's Largest Nuclear Power Project: Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on 26 November 2013 launched the construction of the country's biggest Nuclear power project. The 2,200-megawatt plant is to be built with Chinese technical assistance on the Arabian Sea coast at Paradise Beach, 40 kilometres (25 miles) west of Karachi. Pakistan already has three operational nuclear plants generating a total of around 740 MW of power and has begun work on a fourth, in addition to the one launched on Tuesday.

1) Narendra Modi in Time magazine’s Person of the Year shortlist: BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is among Time magazine’s shortlisted candidates for its ‘Person of the Year’ title and has emerged as an early favourite among the readers in an online poll. Time has shortlisted 42 global leaders, entrepreneurs and celebrities for its ‘Person of the Year 2013’ and will announce the winner next month. Other candidates in fray are Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, US President Barack Obama, Pakistani teenage education activist Malala Yousafzai, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and even the new heir to the British throne Prince George.

2) Constitution Day observed:  Constitution Day was observed across India on 26 November 2013 to honour the Constitution of India. The Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, which came into force on 26 January 1950.

3) Fifth anniversary of 26/11 Mumbai attacks-Tributes paid to martyrs, victims:  India marked the fifth anniversary of the Mumbai terror attacks that jolted the world, five years ago. The dastardly attacks on India's financial capital by 10 LeT terrorists lasted 60 hours, killed 166 including 26 foreigners, and left 300 injured.

4) Rohit Sharma signed up with Adidas: Sport and apparels brand Adidas has roped in cricketer Rohit Sharma to be endorse its range of products. Rohit, who is also the captain of Indian Premier League team Mumbai Indians, was welcomed into team Adidas by master blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

5) Amar Chitra Katha unveils comics on Kurien; plans on Dhyanchand, KD Jadhav: Amar Chitra Katha (ACK), well-known publishers of children’s graphic comics is planning to immortalise sports legends Dhyan Chand and K D Jadhav, too, in its series on India’s “Visionaries”. The popular publication has sold the maximum numbers on legends like Mother Teresa, Jim Corbett, Salim Ali and JRD Tata, Reena Puri, said the Editor of the Group on the sidelines of a function where ACK unveiled an illustrated graphic comics on life and times of the late Dr Verghese Kurien, Father of White Revolution, on his 92nd birth anniversary on Tuesday.

6) YES Bank signed multi-year deal with Hockey India League: Mid-sized private sector lender Yes Bank announced a multi-year deal with the Hockey India League (HIL) commencing with the 2014 season. In the inaugural season, 70 top domestic players including the Indian national side as well as 50 international players who are part of the national squads of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Netherlands, Germany, Malaysia, Spain, and Argentina played for five franchise teams. Six franchise teams will feature in the second season of the Hero Hockey India League to be held from January 25 to February 23, 2014. Rana Kapoor, Managing Director and CEO, Yes Bank said: “Through our dedicated Sports Banking proposition, we are committed to provide a robust financial infrastructure to support sports through customised banking solutions for various hockey associations, teams and players.”

7) Monster storm Lehar hits open waters, aims at AP coast: Very severe cyclone Lehar has left the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, its first port of call, and has hit the open waters of the Bay of Bengal. It will now wheel along a rather straight highway that takes it towards the Andhra Pradesh coast, its final destination.

8) Aarushi's parents sentenced to life in jail for double murder: A day after pronouncing the dentist couple, Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, guilty of murdering their 14-year-old daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj, a special CBI court on Tuesday handed them the minimum punishment of life imprisonment for the crime.

9) Gullapalli N. Rao gets award: Gullapalli N. Rao has been honoured with the `Outstanding humanitarian service award’ by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The founder and Chairman of the Hyderabad-based, LV Prasad Eye Institute, Rao has been recognised for the eye care delivery model which he created with the Institute and his contributions to prevention of blindness globally.

10) RBI widens infrastructure sector lending sub-category:  Reserve Bank widened the definition of infrastructure lending including hotels with project costing more thanRs. 200 crore as well as convention centres with project worth Rs. 300 crore.


11) 6 killed in bomb blast in village near Kudankulam nuclear plant: At least six people, including three girls, were killed when country bombs exploded in a house at Tsunami Colony, near the Kudankulam nuclear plant, around 7pm on Tuesday. The bombs were allegedly stocked by some villagers following a clash with another group. Three houses caved in due to the impact of the explosion.
