The 2016 French Open was the 115th edition
and the second Grand Slam event of the year 2016. It took place at the Stade

Slam win in her second Grand Slam final.

Hi Aspirants, much awaited Man Booker Prize
2016 winner has been announced and it goes to South Korean author Han Kang.
Check the details from below.
1. South Korean author Han Kang has won the
prestigious Man Booker International Prize for her novel 'The Vegetarian' which
deals with a woman's rejection of human brutality and giving up of eating meat.
2. Kang, 45, beat writers including Nobel
laureate Orhan Pamuk and international bestseller Elena Ferrante to win the
50,000-pound award which she shared with her novel's translator Deborah Smith.
3. Published by Portobello Books, 'The
Vegetarian' was selected unanimously among 155 books by a panel of five judges
chaired by noted critic and editor Boyd Tonkin who described Kang's work as
"lyrical and lacerating".
4. The Vegetarian' is her first novel to be
translated into English by 28-year-old Deborah Smith who started learning
Korean only at the age of 21.
5. The Vegetarian is a three-part novel
that follows the story of Yeong-hye, a dutiful Korean wife who, spurred on by a
dream, decides one day to become a vegetarian, something that is extremely
uncommon in South Korean society.

Angelique Kerber became the first German to win a Grand Slam title since her
childhood idol Steffi Graf in 1999 when she upset world number one Serena
Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to clinch the Australian Open on 30 January 2016.

Serena had been seeking her seventh Melbourne Park title and 22nd
overall.
* The seventh seeded Kerber, however, was
not overawed by the occasion of her first grand slam final, breaking twice in
the first set as Williams made 23 unforced errors.

Hi Aspirants...On the eve of Republic Day,
the government announced the list of recipients of this year’s Padma awards
2016. The awardees include Bollywood actors, media personalities, former
politicians, public officials and sportspersons who have made the country
proud.
* Actor Rajinikanth, media baron Ramoji
Rao, former J-K governor Jagmohan and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will
be awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award bestowed by
India. It will also be awarded posthumously to Dhirubhai Ambani, who founded
Reliance Industries.
* This year, the Padma Bhushan will go to
former CAG Vinod Rai, Bollywood actor Anupam Kher and singer Udit Narayan. It
will also go to former US Ambassador to India Robert D Blackwill, sportspersons
Saina Nehwal and Sania Mirza, and Indu Jain of Bennett, Coleman & Co.
* Senior lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, actors Ajay
Devgn and Priyanka Chopra are on the list of Padma Shri awardees, along with
director SS Rajamouli (of Bahubali fame) and Bhojpuri singer Malini Awasthi.
* Padma Awards - one of the highest
civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely,
Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various
disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs,
science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and
education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for
exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished
service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field.
The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
* These awards are conferred by the
President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan
usually around March/ April every year. This year the President of India has
approved conferment of Padma Awards to 112 persons as per the list below. The
list comprises of 10 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan and 83 Padma Shri
Awardees. 19 of the awardees are women
and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of foreigners, NRIs,
PIOs (include one posthumous) and 4 Posthumous awardees.

Jamaican novelist Marlon James won Man Booker Prize 2015
* Jamaican author Marlon James on 14
October 2015 won the Man Booker Prize for "A Brief History of Seven
Killings", a re-telling of the attempted assassination of musician Bob
Marley.
* James, 44, is the first Jamaican to win
the award in its 47-year history.
* One of the world's most prestigious
literary awards, Man Booker Prize carries a £50,000 (67,000 euro, $77,000)
prize and winners enjoy a boost in sales and a global readership.
* "A Brief History of Seven
Killings" was chosen unanimously by the judges after less than two hours
of deliberation.
* It beat bookmaker's favourite, US author
Hanya Yanagihara's "A Little Life", a disturbing tale of male
friendship with graphic details of child sex abuse, which had been the 6/4
favourite to win.
* Also shortlisted were Briton Sunjeev
Sahota's "The Year of the Runaways", "The Fishermen" by
Nigeria's Chigozie Obioma, American author Anne Tyler's "A Spool of Blue
Thread" and British writer Tom McCarthy's "Satin Island".
* The Man Booker Prize was previously open
only to fiction written in English by authors from Britain, Ireland, the
Commonwealth and Zimbabwe but this is the second year it has been open to all
nationalities.

Nobel Prize in Economics 2015
The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of
Alfred Nobel 2015 was awarded to Angus Deaton "for his
analysis of consumption, poverty, and welfare".
Here are the details:
* British economist Angus Deaton won the
2015 economics Nobel Prize for "his analysis of consumption, poverty, and
welfare," the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
* "To design economic policy that
promotes welfare and reduces poverty, we must first understand individual
consumption choices," the award-giving body said on announcing the 8
million Swedish crown ($978,000) prize. "More than anyone else, Angus
Deaton has enhanced this understanding."
* The economics prize, officially called
the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, was
established in 1968.
* It was not part of the original group of
awards set out in dynamite tycoon Nobel's 1895 will.

Alexievich "for her polyphonic writings, a
monument to suffering and courage in our time".
Here are the details:
* Belarussian author Svetlana Alexievich
has won the Nobel Prize for Literature for her portrayal of life in the former
Soviet Union which the Swedish Academy said was "a monument to suffering
and courage in our time."
* Alexievich's work includes a series of
books called the "Voices of Utopia" about individuals in the former
Soviet Union as well as works on the consequences of the 1986 nuclear disaster
in Chernobyl and the Russian war in Afghanistan.
* Alexievich, born in 1948 in Ukraine,
worked as a teacher and a journalist after finishing school.
