Happy Father’s Day 2014

June 15, 2014(Sunday) is celebrated in India as Father’s Day. A day exclusively dedicated for our loving dads.

Father's Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June including India, but it is also celebrated widely on other days. Father's Day was created to complement Mother's Day, a celebration that honors mothers and motherhood.

“A dad is someone who
wants to catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up,
brushes you off,
and lets you try again.”

“A dad is someone who
wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence
when you get hurt. “

“A dad is someone who
holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail...”

March 22, 2014: World Water Day

 >> March 22 is World Water Day. A day to remember the importance of water. A day to remember that Water is precious and each drop needs to be saved for ourselves and for our next generation.

>> But it’s so sad that we remember and talk much about Water only on March 22 and then continue to contaminate and waste it all the other 364 days. If there is no fresh water, there is no life. What makes earth compatible for life itself is water. What would the world do without fresh water? We need it to hydrate our bodies, it’s in the food we eat and the beverages we drink. We use it to clean ourselves, our clothes, our dishes, our cars and everything else around us. You can travel on it or jump in it to cool off on hot summer days. Many of the products that you use everyday, contain it or were manufactured using it. All forms of life need it, and if they don’t get enough of it, they quite simply die.

>> Political disputes have centred around water nowadays. In some places, it’s treasured and incredibly difficult to get. In others, it’s incredibly easy to get and then squandered and wasted. So, as our numbers grow, we have to realise that fresh water is becoming scarce, and there soon will not be enough to go around unless we learn to save it.

>> So friends..its our responsibility to save water. Whenever you use water, remember its importance and reduce its consumption to the absolute minimum. We need to keep that water flowing in our taps and into our homes and what better way than to be a mover and shaker or rather a saver, in your own little way?
Here is the history and importance of World Water Day.

** World Water Day has been observed on 22 March since 1993 when the United Nations General Assembly declared 22 March as "World Day for Water". The UN and its member nations devote this day to implementing UN recommendations and promoting concrete activities within their countries regarding the world's water resources. Each year, one of various UN agencies involved in water issues takes the lead in promoting and coordinating international activities for World Water Day. Since its inception in 2003, UN-Water has been responsible for selecting the theme, messages and lead UN agency for the World Day for Water.

2014 World Water Day Theme: "Water and Energy"

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Message for the World Water Day

"On World Water Day, let us pledge to develop the policies needed to ensure that sustainable water and energy are secured for the many and not just the few".

March 8: International Women's Day

Know about International Women's Day

International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women's Day, is marked on March 8 every year.  In the year 1914, International Women's Day was celebrated on March 8 for the first time. The dates continued to fluctuate till the mid-40's. The UN theme this year is "Equality for Women is Progress for All".

>> International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
>> This year’s theme, “Equality for women is progress for all”  emphasizes how gender equality, empowerment of women, women’s full enjoyment of human rights and the eradication of poverty are essential to economic and social development. It also stresses the vital role of women as agents of development.

Message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the eve of International Women's Day
"Countries with more gender equality have better economic growth. Companies with more women leaders perform better. Peace agreements that include women are more durable. Parliaments with more women enact more legislation on key social issues such as health, education, anti-discrimination and child support. The evidence is clear: equality for women means progress for all."

President of India’s message on the occasion of International Women’s Day

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee in his message on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which is observed every year on March 8, has said: -

“On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, I extend warm greetings and good wishes to women in all parts of our country. I thank them for their invaluable contribution in the making of our great nation.

Women in India have attained greatness through the ages – in political, academic and spiritual spheres. They enjoyed freedom and equal participation in public life in ancient India. In the Rig Veda, women are placed at the highest pedestal – ‘Yatr nariyastu poojayante ramante tatr devah’ or where women are worshipped, Gods preside there. The Taittriya Upanishad teaches us ‘Matridevo bhava’ or ‘Let your mother be God to you’.

Swami Vivekananda rightly said, “All nations have attained greatness by paying proper respect to women. That country and that nation which does not respect women has never become great”.

The principle of gender equality is also enshrined in the Indian Constitution. Not only does the Constitution grant equality to women, but also empowers the State to adopt measures of positive discrimination in favour of women. Empowerment of women must be regarded as not only an element of our efforts towards gender equality but also a critical step for stimulating their full participation in nation building.

We as a society must work towards changing negative perceptions about women. Women should be provided a safe, secure and congenial environment in which their talents can flower and they can contribute their full share in the building of our nation.

On this International Women’s Day, let us resolve to redouble our efforts for the protection and welfare of women. May the celebrations inculcate in every member of our society the highest respect for women.”

Women's Day 2014 doodle featured by Google for second-straight day

>> Women's Day 2014 doodle can be seen on Google's home page across the world. Interestingly, the video-based doodle first made an appearance on the eve of International Women's Day on Friday, and not too surprisingly, it continues to be showcased on the day that celebrates women's achievements in various spheres of life.

>> In the doodle, the Google logo features a play button in the second 'O' of the logo, which also depicts the Venus symbol for women - a small circle, with a cross below it. The Google logo in turn is surrounded by more Venus symbols. Hitting the play button causes a YouTube video to open up. The video has women from all walks of life wishing people Happy International Women's Day. Amongst other famous female personalities, the video features Malala Yousafzai and Asha Bhonsle.

World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss capital, Berne. It was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1969.

Awareness
The purpose of World Post Day is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people’s and businesses’ everyday lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries. The celebration encourages member countries to undertake programme activities aimed at generating a broader awareness of their Post’s role and activities among the public and media on a national scale.

New products and services
Every year, more than 150 countries celebrate World Post Day in a variety of ways. In certain countries, World Post Day is observed as a working holiday. Many Posts use the event to introduce or promote new postal products and services. Some Posts also use World Post Day to reward their employees for good service.

In many countries, philatelic exhibitions are organized and new stamps and date cancellation marks are issued. Other activities include the display of World Post Day posters in post offices and other public places, open days at post offices, mail centers and postal museums, the holding of conferences, seminars and workshops, as well as cultural, sport and other recreational activities.
