Things you must know about ‘Mangalyaan’- ISRO Mars mission

India has launched its Mars mission ‘Mangalyaan’ from the Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) centre at Sriharikota on 05 November 2013 (Tuesday). If it goes well, India will join the league of countries like America, Russia and Europe to undertake a successful Mars mission.


The important move by India is being watched by the world. Here are some of the highlights of the Mars mission of India:

Distance to Mars: 400 million km
Duration of journey: 300 days
Launch time: 23 minutes as the rocket will be visible to ISRO through its own ground for this period.
Mars orbit insertion date: September 12, 2014
Next major date: November 30, when the aircraft will begin its journey to Mars. Before this date, it will continue to revolve around Earth
Cost of mission: Rs 450 crore

MISSION'S OBJECTIVES
# Orbit manoeuvres to ensure final capture into Martian orbit
# Development of force models and algorithms for orbit and attitude computations and analyses
# Maintain the probe in all phases of the mission, meeting power, communications, thermal and payload operation requirements
# Look for methane on Mars, for detection of life on the planet

EYE ON THE SKY
# During the launch, the Mangalyaan Mission will be tracked by two specially equippeed Shipping Corporation of India ships--Yamuna and Nalanda, positioned in the South Pacific Ocean.

# During its journey from Earth to Mars, the MarsOrbiter will be tracked using the Indian Deep Space Network at Baylalu on the outskirts of Bangalore and sea-borne S-band terminals.

# At the time of the Mars capture in September 2014, tracking and communication with the satelite will be done using the 70-metre antenna of NASA's deep space network at Canberra in Australia.

The Team

S K Shivakumar: The Director of the ISRO Satellite Centre, which built the Mars Orbiter and spacecraft. An engineer from the Indian Institute of Science, he was earlier the head of ISRO's telemetry, tracking and command network, ISTRAC.

Dr Mylswamy Annnadurai: The Programme Director of IRS & SSS (Indian Remote Sensing & Small, Science and Student Satellites) at ISRO, he was the project director of the Moon Mission and is overseeing the one to Mars as well.

P Kunhikrishnan: He is the Mission Director for the launcher. From the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, Kunhikrishnan has seven successful PSLV launches under his belt since 2009.

S Arunan: The Project Director for the Mars Orbiter. For the senior scientist with the ISRO Satellite Centre, the Mars Mission is a maiden venture as Project Director. His team created the Mars Orbiter for ISRO in 12 months.

Dr V Kesavaraju: The Mission Director for the post-launch operations. A team led by Dr Kesavaraju of the ISRO Satellite Centre will monitor the Mars Mission following its launch, including tracking it in outer space.

1) Ind vs WI Test- Day 2: Rohit Sharma hits century on debut to put India in command- Rohit Sharma became the 14th Indian to hit a century on Test debut  as India recovered from a top-order collapse to take a firm grip of the first Test against the West Indies with a 120-run first-innings lead on Thursday. Sharma stole the thunder with his unbeaten 127 as the hosts, who were precariously placed at 83 for five at one stage, reached a comfortable 354 for six at close on an eventful second day's play.

2) ISRO performs first orbit-raising operation on Mars mission-Indian Space Research Organisation today performed the first orbit-raising manoeuvre of the Mars Orbiter spacecraft, which was launched on Tuesday. “We started it by 1.17 a.m. and have successfully completed the first orbit-raising manoeuvre of Mars Orbiter Spacecraft. Right now, the computation is going on,” an ISRO spokesman told PTI.

3) International film festival to be held in Goa this month: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari has announced the launch of the 44th International Film Festival of India to he held in Goa later this month. The film festival is set to take off on November 20 and will end on 30th of this month.

4) 1 killed, 6 injured in Manipur bomb blasts: A labourer was killed and six others were injured when suspected militants exploded two bombs in Thoubal district of Manipur.

5) 3 Indians bag youth business awards: Indian entrepreneurs have bagged three out of five international awards given by The Prince’s Youth Business International (YBI) for 2013. Forty countries in the YBI network compete for these annual awards. The winners were felicitated by the Prince of Wales in St. James Palace. The winner of the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award was Sharad Tandale, while Godavari Satpute bagged the prize for the Women Entrepreneur of the Year. Mentor of The year award was won by Mohan Singh, while Vikram Deshmukh was highly commended by the Judging Panel for the Environmental Entrepreneur of the year award.

6) Russia launched Olympic torch into space: Russia launched the Olympic torch into space on Thursday, as part of the flame’s journey ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympics.

7) US-Indian Navy joint exercise begins: Four-day joint Naval exercise ’MALABAR 2013’ in the Bay of Bengal between the US and India, providing an opportunity to advance multi-national maritime relationship and mutual security issues, began today.

8) Uninor CEO Yogesh Malik quits: GSM operator Uninor’s, the Indian unit of Norway’s Telenor, Chief Executive Officer Yogesh Malik has resigned, citing personal reasons.

9) Google’s doodle celebrated 125th birthday of Nobel laureate C.V Raman: Today's doodle celebrated the 125th birth anniversary of the scientist with an illustration of the Raman Effect. While Raman’s face is featured behind Google’s G, the two Os that follow demonstrate the Raman Effect, a discovery that saw him win a Nobel Prize in 1930.

10) India home to 103 billionaires; 6th largest globally. India has more number of billionaires than France, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Hong Kong and is home to the sixth largest group of super rich population in the world, says a report. Moreover, the country's financial capital Mumbai with 30 billionaire, is among the top 5 'billionaire cities' globally, which was topped by New York that is home to 96 billionaires.

11) Central Election Commission (CEC) of Tajikistan on 6 November 2013 declared that Imomali Rakhmon was re-elected as the President of Tajikistan. Imomali Rakhmon belongs to People's Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT). The President of Tajikistan is elected by popular vote. The term of the office is 7 years.

12) The Minister of Railways Mallikarjun Kharge flagged off the first ever Dual Cab 4500 HP Freight Diesel locomotive called Vijay from Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi, a production unit of Indian Railways, on 6 November 2013.

13) Airtel launched 3G services in Bangladesh: Airtel Bangladesh, a unit of Bharti Airtel, has launched 3G services in Bangladesh’s Dhaka and Chittagong cities.

1) Swedish Embassy celebrates 100 years of Tagore’s Nobel Prize: Rabindranath Tagore, the first Indian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature will be at the centre of celebrations of the Sweden India Nobel Memorial Week in the country. The seventh edition of the week is dedicated to Rabindranath Tagore to mark the centenary of his Nobel Prize in Literature which will be organized by the Swedish Embassy.

2) Nirupama Rao, Indian envoy to the US, bid farewell to her career of diplomacy, as members of the American diplomatic corps and her counterparts from countries like China and Brazil gathered at a reception hosted in her honour by the State Department. She served as India’s Foreign Secretary, External Affairs Ministry’s spokesperson and envoy to important countries like China and Sri Lanka in four decades as a diplomat.

3) India’s Masterchef Tarla Dalal dead: Tarla Dalal, India’s first celebrity chef, who died at the age of 77 in Mumbai on Wednesday, brought the world into Indian kitchens; she took Indian cooking to homes across the world as well.

4) Charkha of Mahatma Gandhi that he used in Yerwada Jail during the Quit India Movement was auctioned in UK for £110000 at England. The charkha of Mahatma Gandhi is about eight decades old.  His last/final will was also auctioned over £20000 for historical documents and artefacts by the Mullock’s Auction house in Shropshire, England. The name of the buyer was kept secret.

5) Mars Mission on track, orbit-raising to begin on 07 Nov 2013: A day after its successful launch, India’s Mars Orbiter spacecraft was functioning smoothly in the Earth’s orbit and ready for orbit-raising operations tomorrow. “Since its injection into Earth’s orbit yesterday, it has been functioning smoothly on the orbit. We are planning to perform orbit-raising manoeuvres in the early hours of tomorrow,” an ISRO spokesman told PTI over phone.

6) Prof Hangloo appointed Kalyani University VC: Rattan Lal Hangloo, senior faculty in Department of History at the University of Hyderabad (UoH), has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Kalyani University in West Bengal for a term of four years.

7) Day 1: India vs West Indies: Shami shines on debut as India take control-  A four-wicket burst by debutant pacer Mohammad Shami rocked the West Indies middle-order as they were all out for 234 runs on the opening day of the first Test against India.

8) Tata Communications has appointed Tri Pham as Chief Strategy Officer of the company.

9) RBI unveils norms for foreign banks to set up wholly-owned units: Foreign banks that want to set up operations in India will have to do so through an independent subsidiary. This means they cannot operate as a branch of the parent bank. The Reserve Bank of India has announced new guidelines with a view to ring-fence the local operations of foreign banks from adverse developments in their home countries.

10) SBI hikes base rate, benchmark prime lending rate by 20 bps: State Bank of India (SBI) has hiked its base rate by 20 basis points to 10 per cent from 9.8 per cent. The country's largest commercial bank has also increased its benchmark prime lending rate by 20 basis points from 14.55 per cent to 14.75 per cent. These changes will come into effect from November 7 (Thursday), SBI said in a filing with the stock exchanges.

11) Prem Narain appointed as Secretary of Ministry of Overseas Affairs: government today appointed Prem Narain as the Secretary of Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry in place of Rajiv Mehrishi, who is now new Fertilisers Secretary.

12) India and China started a 10 day joint training exercise 'Hand in Hand’, aimed at enhancing counter terrorism skills in Miao ergang, China.

13) Jammu and Kashmir Bank has reappointed Mushtaq Ahmad as its Chairman and CEO for a period of another three years.

14) LIC Housing Finance Ltd has appointed Sunita Sharma as Managing Director and CEO with effect from November 5, 2013.


15)  Assamese music director Sher Choudhury passed away on 6 November 2013 at B. Baruah Cancer Institute in Guwahati, Assam. He was 69. Sher Choudhury received National Award for best music director for the Gautam Bora directed film 'Wosobipo'  in 1990.

1) ISRO successfully launched its historic mission to Mars from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, about 100 from Chennai. It was India’s first mission to the red planet. The mission follows India’s successful 2008-2009 Chandrayaan-1 moon probe, which discovered water molecules in the lunar soil. The total cost of the Mars mission is 73 million US dollars.

2) Bangladeshi court on 5 November 2013 sentenced to death 152 soldiers for their role in a 2009 mutiny. The life includes massacre of 74 people, including top army officers.  The trial is considered one of the world’s biggest ever mass criminal trials.

3) US software company Microsoft recently developed a new cost-effective sign language translator that converts signs into spoken and written language - and vice versa.

4) Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad, recently received over 50 samples for detection of chemical weapons from the Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The IICT was one of the 21 labs in 17 countries that were designated by OPCW for off-site analysis of chemical weapons.

5) Bharti Airtel on 5 November 2013 entered into an agreement with the Warid Group to acquire its Congo operations with the objective of strengthening its stronghold in the African market.

6) 12th edition of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas will be held in New Delhi from 7th to 9th of January 2014. This was announced by Vayalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs on 5 Novemeber 2013 in New Delhi. The theme of the convention is -Engaging Diaspora - Connecting across Generations- with a special focus on the younger generation.
