1)Arunachal Pradesh Capital Itanagar Put On India's Railway Map:  Arunachal capital Itanagar was put on the country's railway map on Monday, with the first passenger train of about 400 commuters arriving at Naharlagun. The train with 10 passengers and two goods compartments, towed by a diesel engine, left Dekargaon at 7a.m. and arrived at 12.30 p.m., covering a distance of 181 kilometers. Itanagar thus becomes the second state capital among the eight north-eastern states after Guwahati to be put on the railway map of India.


2) India's growth likely to recover to 5.4% in 2014: IMF:  Supported by slightly stronger global growth, improving export competitiveness and implementation of recently approved investment projects, India's growth is expected to recover from 4.4 percent in 2013 to 5.4 percent in 2014, the IMF said Tuesday. "India's growth is expected to recover from 4.4 percent in 2013 to 5. 4 percent in 2014, supported by slightly stronger global growth, improving export competitiveness and implementation of recently approved investment projects," the latest edition of the World Economic Outlook released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said.

3) Wal-Mart to open 50 wholesale stores in India in 4-5 years: Deciding to focus on the cash-and-carry segment in India, retail giant Wal-Mart plans to open 50 wholesale stores in the next four to five years to expand its footprint in the country. About six months after breaking up with the Bharti group, the Bentonville-based firm said on Tuesday that it is also strengthening compliance procedures following investigations into alleged corruption in its Indian arm.

4) Philippine top court approves controversial birth control law: Millions of poor people in the Philippines will have access to free contraceptives for the first time after the nation's top court on Tuesday approved a deeply controversial birth control law. The Supreme Court's ruling was hailed by supporters as a triumph in the battle to ease crippling poverty, empower women and curtail a population explosion in the Southeast Asian nation of 100 million people. But the Catholic Church, which had led a bitter campaign for 15 years against efforts to introduce any form of family planning laws, vowed to continue resisting what it termed an "unjust" law.

5) Mizoram poll put off to Friday after bandh: The Election Commission on Tuesday deferred polling for the lone Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram from April 9 to April 11 after several NGOs and student bodies called a 72-hour bandh in protest against the EC’s decision to allow voters from the Bru community to vote through postal ballots from relief camps in Tripura.


6) Ram Navami celebrated: Ram Navami, the birth of Lord Ram was celebrated on Tuesday with religious fervor and gaiety. President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have greeted the people on the occasion.

1) World Health Day observed: World Health Day was observed across the globe on April 7. The Theme for 2014 is vector-borne diseases. Vectors (mosquitoes, flies, bugs etc) transmit diseases like malaria, dengue, yellow fever etc. The theme for the last year was 'Control your blood pressure'. The World Health Day is celebrated every year on April 7, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO).In 1948, the WHO held the First World Health Assembly. The Assembly decided to celebrate 7 April of each year, with effect from 1950, as the World Health Day. The World Health Day is held to mark WHO's founding, and is seen as an opportunity by the organization to draw worldwide attention to a subject of major importance to global health each year.

2) First phase of Lok Sabha election began in Assam, Tripura; High turnout: The first round of elections on Monday in the six parliamentary constituencies of the North-East recorded a high turnout. In Assam where five constituencies went to the poll, the Election Commission described the turnout as above average with over 72.5 per cent voters casting their vote. The turnout was well above the 69.60 per cent voting registered for the entire State in the 2009 polls. The Tripura West constituency also recorded an overwhelmingly high turnout of 84 per cent. According to the Election Commission, the final figure could go up by 1-2 per cent.


3) Dhoni named captain of World T20 Team of Tournament: His side may have lost in the final but Mahendra Singh Dhoni was on Monday named captain of the 2014 ICC World Team of the Tournament that figures four Indians, including star batsman Virat Kohli. Opener Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin are the other two Indian players who feature in the team that was announced by the ICC. Kohli was adjudged Player of the Tournament for amassing 319 runs with the help of four half centuries, including knocks of 72 and 77 in the semifinal and final of the showpiece event.

4) Sun Pharma to buy Ranbaxy in $3.2 billion all-share deal: In a landmark transaction for the Indian pharmaceutical industry, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (SPL) on Monday announced that it will acquire 100 per cent of Ranbaxy Laboratories in a $ 4 billion all-share transaction. The transaction has a total equity value of $ 3.2 billion and a net debt of $ 800 million on Ranbaxy’s books will also be part of the transaction. The combined entity will create the fifth-largest specialty generics company in the world and the largest pharmaceutical company in India with leadership in 13 specialty segments.

5) Shooter Heena Sidhu becomes world No.1: By virtue of consistent performances, shooter Heena Sidhu has now become world No.1 in the 10 metres air pistol event, according to the recent rankings released by International Shooting Sport Federation. Last month in Kuwait, she won a gold medal in the Asian Air Gun Championship and also recently finished with a silver at the ISSF rifle/pistol World Cup in Fort Benning, USA. At the World Cup, 2013 in Munich, Sidhu shot a world record score to win the gold medal.

6) Kingfisher airline brand up for sale: The erstwhile 'king of good times', Vijay Mallya, may now lose his Kingfisher brand. Lenders have started the process of selling brands associated with the grounded Kingfisher Airlines (KFA). And the ones up for grab include 'Kingfisher', 'fly the good times' and 'flying models'. The sale will not directly impact Mallya's flagship beer brand by the same name. That's because the airline and the beer brands are registered under different categories. However, Dutch giant Heineken, which is the largest shareholder in United Breweries, makers of Kingfisher beer, has reportedly expressed concern about the sale of the surrogate 'Kingfisher' (airline) brand.

7) Lok Sabha Elections 2014: BJP Released Manifesto: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 7 April released its "Election Manifesto 2014" in New Delhi, emphasising that it will strive for the revival of growth and job creation in the country. However, the party said that it will not allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail trade. The 52-page election manifesto was released at a function at the BJP headquarters. BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, party president Rajnath Singh, veteran leaders LK Advani, Sushma Swaraj and others were present at the event. The manifesto also said that BJP will ensure equal opportunities for all minorities.

8) Jhumpa Lahiri’s Lowland shortlisted for top UK prize: Pulitzer Prize-winning Indian American novelist Jhumpa Lahiri’s “Lowland” has been shortlisted for this year’s Baileys Prize, the UK’s only annual book award for fiction written by a woman. “The Lowland”, which is about the lives of brothers Subhash and Udayan, their choices and their fate, was described by Helen Fraser, Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction 2014 Chair, as “Moving and vivid, an unforgettable story of two brothers and the different paths they take. A novel about how political passion can destroy lives.” Earlier known as the Orange Prize, the winner will be announced on June 4 in London and presented with a cheque for USD 30,000.

9) Cinematographer VK Murthy passed away at 90 in Bangalore: The veteran cinematographer breathed his last at his residence in Bangalore. He was the first cinematographer to receive Dada Saheb Phalke award in 2008. Cinematic masterpieces like Pyaasa and 'Kagaz Ke Phool' gave him an iconic status for his camera work.

10) Koyal Rana wins Miss India 2014 title: Koyal Rana won the coveted Miss India 2014 crown at the 51st edition of the pageant, on Saturday, April 5. She was crowned winner among 24 gorgeous contestants from across the country. Miss India 2013 Navneet Kaur Dhillion, and Miss World 2013 Megan Young felicitated Rana with the crown at the beauty pageant. Jhataleka Malhotra, was crowned first runner-up by Sobhita Shulipala, and Gail Nicole Da Silva was crowned second runner-up by Zoya Afroz. Koyal Rana hails from Jaipur, Jhataleka from Mumbai, and Gail from Goa. Rana will represent India at the Miss World 2014 beauty pageant this year.


11) Army successfully test-fired BrahMos missile:  Army on Monday successfully test-fired an advanced version of 290 km range supersonic cruise missile BrahMos as part of a user trial at Pokhran test range in Rajasthan.

1) Advani filed nomination from Gandhinagar for Lok Sabha polls: Accompanied by Narendra Modi, veteran BJP leader L K Advani on Saturday filed his nomination from Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency, putting up a show of unity after months of apparent frost in ties between the two. Modi himself handed over the papers to the Returning Officer of Gandhinagar, a seat Advani was virtually forced to accept over Bhopal which was said to be his first choice.

2) Asia's largest Tulip garden thrown open for public: Asia's largest Tulip garden on the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar was thrown open for visitors on Saturday, even as the inclement weather conditions have delayed blooming of majority of the bulbs. "The garden was thrown open for the public today. The weather this year delayed the blooming of the tulips and delayed its opening," an official of the Floriculture Department said. He said most of the bulbs had not bloomed due to inclement weather and incessant rains in the month of March this year.

3) Afghans defy Taliban threats to vote in large numbers to elect their new President: Afghans voted in large numbers Saturday to choose a successor to President Hamid Karzai in the country's first democratic transfer of power as US-led forces end their 13-year war. Despite Taliban threats, voting was largely peaceful with long queues in cities across the country as voters cast their ballots at around 6,000 centres under tight security.

4) First female mayor of Paris takes office: The first female mayor of Paris has taken office, hailing a "great advance for all women" and saying she feels the weight of responsibility in her new job. Anne Hidalgo donned the red, white and blue mayoral sash Saturday after at a City Hall vote enshrining her victory in the capital as part of nationwide municipal elections on March 30.



5) IRNSS-1B orbit raised: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday successfully boosted the apogee and the perigee of its navigation satellite, the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS-1B), by firing the propulsion system on board the satellite for seven minutes and a half from 5.35 p.m. IRNSS-1B is India’s second navigation satellite. A total of seven satellites will form the IRNSS constellation.

1) Sri Lanka clinched their maiden T20 world cup: India’s quest for a historic treble ended in heartbreak as a gutsy Sri Lanka produced a clinical display to win their maiden CC World T20 trophy with a convincing six-wicket victory on Sunday. Sri Lanka thus became third time lucky in the World T20 summit clash while Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s dream to win a record third World title lay in tatters as his team faltered when it mattered the most. Despite Virat Kohli’s belligerent 77, Yuvraj Singh’s excruciatingly slow innings of 11 off 21 balls left India with a very modest score 130 for four in 20 overs. Kohli’s brilliance went down the drain due to Yuvraj’s struggle. Sri Lanka faced a few anxious moments in the early stages of the chase but eventually overhauled the target with 13 balls to spare.Virat Kohli was declared the 'Man of the Series'.

2) Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP back in NDA, joins hands with BJP: In a boost for the BJP on the eve of the first phase of polling, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) returned to the NDA on Sunday, ignoring strong protests from local units of both the parties. Announcing the poll alliance, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu said, “What is important is we have to defeat the Congress at the national level. This is a historic tie-up and I am confident the NDA will win 300 seats. I appeal to all TDP and BJP leaders not to oppose this and instead unite to win in this election.’’ The TDP has returned to the NDA after a decade — the party left the alliance after the 2004 loss, blaming the BJP for the Gujarat riots.

3) India enter Davis Cup World Group playoffs: The Indian Davis Cup team entered the World Group playoffs after notching up a historic away triumph over Korea following Somdev Devvarman's win over Yong-Kyu Lim in the reverse singles of the Group I Asia/Oceania second round tie here on Sunday.

4) Punjab beat Odisha to retain Junior Men National hockey title: Punjab closed the championship in style, as they stunned Hockey Odisha 6-2 in the finals of the 4th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2014 (Division A), played on Sunday in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and retained the championship title. In an exciting finals of the 4th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship (Division A), the defending champions Punjab held Hockey Odisha back on their feet as the penetrated a total of six goals to bag the championship title for the second time and let Hockey Odisha keep a mere two goals in their account.

5) Lewis Hamilton wins Bahrain Grand Prix thriller for Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton won a thrilling Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday after a duel with Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in a floodlit night race full of overtaking and wheel-to-wheel battles. The win - in Formula One's 900th grand prix - was the Briton's second in a row, the 24th of his career and also a second successive one-two for a team in a class of their own and with two drivers free to race each other from start to finish. Mercedes have now won all three races so far in 2014.

6) Australia bags women’s World T20 title: Two-time defending champion Australia powered to a six-wicket win over old foe England to win its third consecutive title in the women’s World Twenty20 in Dhaka on Sunday.

7) Nigeria overtakes South Africa as the largest economy of Africa: Nigerian GDP clocks over $500bn after the country rebased the GDP calculation first time since 1990. Nigeria, with a population of over 17 crore, is the most populous country in Africa.

8) Lee Chong Wei wins third India Open Super Series title: Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei proved why he is the World No.1 badminton player by thrashing No.2 Chen Long of China in straight games to clinch his third $250,000 India Open Super Series men's singles title in four years here on Sunday. The top seed needed only 55 minutes to better Long 21-13, 21-17 at the Siri Fort Sports Complex. In a repeat of last month's All-England Open final, Lee won to take a 9-8 lead in career meetings.


9) Shixian Wang won third India Open Super Series women's title: In an all-Chinese women's singles final, All-England champion Shixian Wang, seeded second, kept her cool at crucial moments to overcome Olympic champion and top seed Li Xuerui 22-20, 21-19 in 47 minutes.
