1) Laxmikant
Parsekar sworn-in as new Goa Chief Minister: Three-time Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
legislator Laxmikant Parsekar ,who was Health Minister in the Manohar Parrikar
government, was on 8 November 2014 sworn in as the 11th Chief Minister of Goa,
bringing down the curtain on a three-day drama. Governor Mridula Sinha
administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Parsekar and nine Ministers,
including two from the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, the BJP’s ally.
2) Manohar
Parrikar resigned as Goa CM: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is
tipped to become the Union Defence Minister, on 8 Nov 2014 tendered his
resignation from the post paving way for the appointment of his successor in
the state. Parrikar faxed his resignation to State Governor Mridula Sinha at
Raj Bhavan on Saturday afternoon, after meeting the Archbishop. The
two-paragraph resignation letter was faxed from his official residence at
Altinho in Panaji.

Modi to expand his council of ministers on 9 November 2014: As many as 20
new faces are expected to be inducted into the Union Council of Ministers on
Sunday in the first revamp exercise which is likely to bring in BJP leaders
Manohar Parrikar, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Bandaru
Datttatreya while elevating a few. While a TDP representative is sure to be
inducted, last-minute problems appeared to have cropped up over a Shiv Sena
member joining the ministry in view of unresolved issues in Maharashtra. Five
months after taking over, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is undertaking an
expansion and reshuffle of his Cabinet in which Parrikar appears all set to get
Defence portfolio which is now held as an additional charge by Finance Minister
Arun Jaitley. The swearing-in of the new ministers will take place at 1.30 PM
on Sunday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The current strength of the Council of
Ministers is 45 - 23 of Cabinet rank, including the Prime Minister, and 22
Ministers of State.

Tendulkar's “Playing It My Way” sets new record in India: Even after
retirement, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar continues to break records and set
new benchmarks. The 41 year old's latest achievement came off the field as his
autobiography “Playing It My Way” accumulated the highest pre-orders in the
fiction and non-fiction category in India. Tendulkar's book overtook Steve
Jobs' biography (by Walter Isaacson) as the best-selling book in India. The
cricketer managed this feat in less than day of the book being launched in
Mumbai.
5) Literary
critic B. Hridayakumari passed away: B. Hridayakumari, winner of the Kerala
Sahitya Academy award and a literary critic, died at a private hospital on 8
November 2014. A respected figure in the social milieu of Kerala, she was the
former principal of the Government Women's College. She headed a committee
constituted by the Kerala State Higher Education Council to suggest
improvements and reforms to the choice-based credit-and-semester system.
6) Salgaocar
lifts Durand Cup 2014: Salgaocar FC scored a solitary goal win over Pune FC
to emerge Durand Cup champions for the third time in Margao on 8 Nov 2014. Salgaocar,
who enjoyed better ball possession, scored the all important goal in the 21st
minute through Thangjam Saran Singh at the Raia Panchayat ground. The winner
was richer by Rs. 25 lakh while Pune FC got Rs. 15 lakh.

draws first game against Carlsen in World Championship: Indian ace
Viswanathan Anand played out a fighting draw with defending champion Magnus
Carlsen of Norway in the first game of the World Chess championship in Sochi.

nominated for ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year Award: Virat Kohli is the lone
Indian male cricketer to be shortlisted for the LG ICC Awards 2014 after he was
nominated for the ODI Cricketer of the Year category. Kohli had earlier won
this award in the year 2012. Kohli will be fighting for the honour against
three South Africans -- Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn. De
Villiers had won this award in 2010.

PV6, 2-seater trainer jet makes its maiden flight: The final version of the
two-seater trainer jet Tejas (PV-6) made its maiden flight on Saturday, in a
milestone for India's overall indigenous Light Combat Aircraft programme.

Singh, Netanyahu review cooperation in combating terror: Contending that
terror is a global menace, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Home
Minister Rajnath Singh in Tel Aviv have reviewed existing cooperation and
future possibilities of enhancing engagement in dealing with the threat. Both
the leaders also expressed their countries' keenness to strengthen ties, with
Netanyahu emphasising that he "believes that relations between the two
countries were poised for rapid development" following his meeting with
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September in New York.

bag 13 medals in Rapid event in Asian Youth Chess: Putting up a dominating
show, India bagged 13 medals, including four golds, out of a possible of 18 in
the Rapid event on the opening day of the Asian Youth Chess Championships, in
New Delhi on Saturday.

1) President
embarked on 2-day Bhutan visit: President Pranab Mukherjee today embarked
on a two-day visit to Bhutan with an aim of further strengthening bilateral
ties. It is the first visit by any Indian head of state in 26 years, during
which some agreements in education sector are likely to be signed. During the
visit, Mukherjee will meet the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck,
and the Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, besides other leaders to help expand
bilateral ties to a new level.
2) Shakib
Al Hasan creates record: Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has become
only the third player in history to take 10 wickets and score a century in a
Test match. His 137 and match figures of 10-124 against Zimbabwe saw him follow
in the footsteps of Ian Botham and Imran Khan. Bangladesh won the second Test in Khulna by
162 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

day Rashtriya Bal Film Mela to commence on November 14: Shri Prakash
Javadekar, Minister for Information and Broadcasting said that “Swacchta” will
be the main theme for three days long Rashtriya Bal Film Mela which is to be
held from November 14-16, 2014, at Siri fort Auditorium, New Delhi. The
festival is planned for the first time in Delhi on the sidelines of Childrens’
day celebrations. Addressing the Press Conference Shri Javadekar said, the
theme for Rashtriya Bal Film Mela would help in taking ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’
to children and would create awareness among them through the medium of films.

Cancer Awareness Day observed: National cancer awareness day was observed
on 7 November every year. Day was
observed to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention,
detection, and treatment.

Chess Championship begins: Opening ceremony of the World Chess Championship
match between Norway's Magnus Carlsen and India's Viswanathan Anand was
conducted at the Congress Hall of the Radisson Blu hotel in Sochi on 7 November
2014. The ceremony was attended by some of the biggest names in the world of
politics and chess. The list of VVIP dignitaries included International Chess
Federation (FIDE) President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Russian Chess Federation
President Andrey Filatov, advisor to Russian President Igor Levitin, former
World Champions Boris Spassky, Nona Gaprindashvili, Anatoly Karpov, Alexander
Khalifman, Zhu Chen, Antoaneta Stefanova, Alexandra Kosteniuk and Russian
deputy minister of sports Pavel Kolobkov.

Airways banned shark fins as cargo: Jet Airways has instituted a policy
against the shipment of shark fins, joining a growing number of major
international carriers committed to protecting declining shark populations and
marine ecosystems. Humane Society International/India, which along with animal
welfare and conservation groups had petitioned Jet Airways to end its role in
the international trade in shark fins, applauded the policy.

gets its first Marine Stewardship Council certified fishery: Ashtamudi
Estuary's short neck clam fishery on 5 Nov 2014 became the first Marine
Stewardship Council (MSC) certified fishery in India. The Ashtamudi short neck
clam fishery is the third fishery in Asia after Vietnam and Maldives to have
received this recognition. The Ashtamudi lake, a Ramsar wetland of
international importance, is the second largest estuarine system in Kerala. It
has extensive mangrove habitats harboring nearly 90 species of fish and 10
species of clams.

1) RBI
made SMS alerts for cheques mandatory: Banks will now start sending SMS
alerts to both payer and drawer in cheque transactions as soon as the
instruments are received for clearing. Expressing concern over the rise in
cheque-related fraud cases, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made SMS alerts
mandatory for such transactions. RBI has also asked banks to alert a customer
with a phone call and obtain confirmation when dealing with suspicious or
high-value cheques. Until now, SMS alerts were mandatory only for card
transactions.
2) India
to hand over fast attack craft INS Tarasa to Seychelles: Chief of Naval
Staff, Admiral RK Dhowan, will be on a four-day visit to Seychelles beginning
Friday during which he will hand over the second Indian Fast Attack Craft (FAC)
to the government there. INS Tarasa, which has been recently refitted at Naval
Dockyard Mumbai, will join her sister ship SCG Topaz as part of the Indian
Navy's assistance to Seychelles Coast Guard in capacity building towards
meeting her maritime security needs.

Recovery Vessel (A 72) sinks off Visakhaptnam Coast: A Torpedo Recovery
Vessel of Indian Navy (A 72) has sunk off the coast of Visakhapatnam on 6
November 2014 evening. The vessel was on a routine mission to recover practice
torpedoes fired by fleet ships during a routine exercise, when she experienced
flooding in one of her compartments. At the time of the incident there were 28
personnel on board. One sailor has lost his life during the rescue operation
and four personnel are reported missing. Twenty three personnel have been
rescued safely by the Search and Rescue (SAR) ships dispatched to the area.

has become the joint top scorer in Champions League history with his goals
against Ajax in Amsterdam on 5 November 2014. The Argentinian has now tied the

appearances in the competition. Raúl took 142 matches to reach his tally.

Nanak's birthday celebrated: Sikhs around the world celebrated the birth of
the faith’s founder, Guru Nanak on 6 Nov 2014, . His teachings, along with
those of the nine other Sikh Gurus that followed him, provide the basis for the
religion. Guru Nanak's birthday is especially celebrated in India and Pakistan,
where parades take place. Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the nation on
the occasion of birthday of Guru Nanak Dev. "I bow to the venerable Guru
Nanak Devji on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. The life and teachings of
Guru Nanak Devji inspire us eternally. Let us follow the path of compassion,
truth and peace as shown by him," Prime Minister Modi tweeted. The day was
a Gazetted holiday in India.

completed acquisition of Motorola from Google: Chinese computer maker
Lenovo on Thursday announced completion of USD 2.91 billion acquisition of
Motorola Mobility from Google, a move that will make it the third largest
smartphone maker in India. Talking to journalists over a conference call, Yang
Yuanqing, chairman and CEO, Lenovo Group, said Motorola will be a strong growth
engine for Lenovo. “We are fully ready to move into the mobile era… Now that
Motorola is part of Lenovo, future will be brighter,” he added.
