1) PM
arrived in Australia, addressed Indian diaspora at Sydney: Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on 17 November 2014 said that it was his good fortune to be the
first Indian prime minister to be born post-Independence. It is my good fortune
that I'm the first prime minister of India to be born post-1947," Modi
said at a massive gathering of the Indian diaspora at the Allphones Arena. At
the gathering, which was attended by over 16,000 members of the Indian
Australian community, Modi dedicated the respect and ovation that he was
getting in Australia to the Indian people. The last Indian prime minister to
visit Australia was Rajiv Gandhi.
2) Mudgal
panel gives clean chit to Srinivasan: The Supreme Court appointed Justice
Mukul Mudgal Committee, which investigated the allegations of spot fixing and
betting in the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has given a
clean chit to sidelined BCCI president N. Srinivasan on both counts. However, the Mudgal report says that Board
of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials were aware of Srinivasan's
son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan's activities but they did not act on it. While
exonerating Meiyappan of spot-fixing charges, the committee said that he was
involved in betting. The committee also says that the then owner of Rajasthan
Royals Raj Kundra was in contact with bookies.

consolidated its no.1 ranking in ICC ODI list: World champions India
consolidated its top rank on the ICC ODI Team Rankings after sweeping the
series against Sri Lanka, which concluded in Ranchi. India had started the
series at third position on 113 points and finished on 117 points - two ratings
points clear of South Africa, which is involved in a five-ODI series against
Australia.

Suresh Raina named co-owner of Uttar Pradesh Wizards in Hockey India League: Following
in the footsteps of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina has become the second
cricketer to be associated with the Hero Hockey India League (HHIL) after he
was named as the co-owner of the Uttar Pradesh Wizards franchise. Raina’s
association with HHIL comes closely on the heels of Dhoni’s entry into the
world of hockey after he recently became the co-owner of the Ranchi franchise
and renamed it Ranchi Rays.

Ramdev gets Z-category security: Controversial yoga guru Baba Ramdev has
been provided with Z-category security by the central government taking into
account his "vulnerability to attacks from his opponents". The
decision has been taken by the home ministry after receiving inputs from
security agencies and increased perception of threat to Ramdev, official
sources said. So far, Ramdev was entitled to Z-category security only within the
jurisdiction of Uttarakhand as per a decision of the state government.

to lower age limit for civil service aspirants: In a move that could affect
thousands of civil service aspirants across the country, the Centre intends to
reduce the upper age limit and number of attempts of applicants with effect
from 2015. Going by the new norm, the upper age limit will be 29 years for
SC/ST candidates, 28 years for OBC and 26 for the unreserved category. At
present, the upper age limit for SC/ST, OBC and unreserved candidates is 35, 33
and 30 years respectively.

developed surface-to-air Akash missile test fired successfully in Odisha:
India on 17 November 2014 successfully test-fired its indigenously developed
surface-to-air 'Akash' missile from a test range in Odisha as part of user
trial by the Air Force. "The sophisticated Akash missile was test-fired
from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur at about 3.18
pm," defence sources said.

1) Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth won
China open Badminton singles: Kidambi Srikanth beat home favourite Lin Dan of
China to record the biggest win in his career and win the prestigious China
Open Super Series men's singles title. Olympic bronze-medalist Saina defeated
Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the women’s singles final. In her sixth appearance
in the prestigious tournament, World No. 5 Saina prevailed over the 17-year-old
Akane 21-12, 22-20 in the women's singles final. This was the first time that any
Indian male shuttler has won a Super Series Premier event since the Super
Series and Premier tournaments were introduced.
2) Two states, three UTs achieve 100%
inclusion in Jan Dhan: In a major boost to the government’s efforts at
financial inclusion, Goa, Kerala, Chandigarh, Puducherry and Lakshadweep have
become the first states in the country to boast of at least one bank account
for every household. “States of Kerala and Goa, union territories of
Chandigarh, Puducherry and Lakshadweep and three districts of Gujarat —
Porbandar, Mehasana, Gandhinagar have been declared as 100 per cent saturated
in terms of coverage of all households with at least one bank account,” the
finance ministry said in a statement.

observed: In 1996, the UN General Assembly invited the UN Member States to

front with a gritty unbeaten century as a dominant India completed a resounding
5-0 whitewash over Sri Lanka by winning the fifth and final One-day
International by three wickets in Ranchi on Sunday. Opting to bat, Sri Lanka
rode on their skipper Angelo Mathews' unbeaten 116-ball 139 to put up a
challenging 286 for eight at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, before

to host G20 summit in 2016: Asian powerhouse China will host world leaders
for the G20 summit in 2016, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said at the
conclusion of two days of talks in Brisbane. Turkey takes over the presidency
from Australia and will host the event in Antalya next year, but in a
communique the group of the world's biggest economies said China would be home
to the G20 in 2016.

Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said Mahatma's teachings of non-violence and

is as relevant today as he was during his time," Modi said while unveiling
a bronze 2.5-metre long statue of Gandhi at Roma Street Parkland in this city
in Australia's southeastern state of Queensland.

16 November. The day is symbolic of a free and responsible press in India. It
is the day on which the Press Council of India started functioning as a moral
watchdog to ensure that not only the press maintains the high standards

Modi meets world leaders on sidelines of G20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi
on 15 November 2014 carried on with his hectic international diplomacy holding
parleys with world leaders, including US President Barack Obama, over bilateral
meetings and informal discussions on the fifth day of his whirlwind
three-nation 10-day tour. More meetings are on the anvil during the remaining
days in Australia and Fiji, where he will be making a day-long visit.

selected UN Women’s first male Goodwill Ambassador: Bollywood
actor-director Farhan Akhtar has become the first man in UN Women’s history to
be appointed its Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia. In his new role, the
40-year-old actor will serve as an advocate for UN Women’s newly-launched
HeForShe initiative for gender equality and women’s empowerment. UN Women’s
other Goodwill Ambassadors include British actor Emma Watson, Academy Award
winner Nicole Kidman and Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand.

film fest began in New Delhi: Finance minister Arun Jaitley inaugurated the
National Children's Film Festival (NCFF) at Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi.
It is organized by the Children's Film Society of India (CFSI). The three-day
festival aims at showing children's films which are either made or shot in
India. The festival, that has been organised by CFSI every alternate year, will
conclude on Sunday. The central theme of this year's NCFF has been declared as
Swachhta and keeping this in mind, there will also be a workshop on how to make
the best stuff out of waste products.

more viewers, public broadcaster Doordarshan is relaunching its national

purple and pink. "We want that Doordarshan be the preferred channel of the
people. So from November 17, a repackaged channel with fresh content will be
beamed to viewers across the country," an official said.

Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has decided to use Sanskrit as a
third language in schools of Kendriya Vidyalaya (KVs) in place of German
language. The decision to discontinue German was taken after the meeting of
Board of Governors of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) on 27 October 2014.
The meeting was headed by Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani.

missile successfully test-fired: India has successfully test-fired its
nuclear-capable Dhanush ballistic missile from a naval ship off the Odisha
coast on Friday night. The surface-to-surface Dhanush, a naval variant of
India's indigenously-developed 'Prithvi' missile, was test fired from a ship in
the Bay of Bengal at around 7.40 PM by the Strategic Force Command (SFC) of the
defence force. "The missile launch was part of an exercise by the armed
forces and the missile reached the designated target with high precision,"
Director of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) M V K V Prasad said.
9) Government
launched modified DBTL scheme in 54 districts: For the benefit of lakhs of
households, the Central government has launched a modified Direct Benefit
Transfer of LPG (DBTL) scheme in 54 districts in 11 states starting November
15, 2014 whereby LPG consumers who have not yet availed the benefit will be
able to get cash subsidy amount transferred into their accounts to buy
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders at market price. This scheme will be
implemented in the rest of India on January 1, 2015.
