GSLV-D5 countdown begins- Indian space science at threshold of a new age
GSLV-D5 countdown begins- Indian space science at
threshold of a new age
1> Indian space science is waiting at
the threshold of a new phase of mega satellite launches and exploration as the
countdown for the GSLV-D5 rocket launch began at 11.50am on Sunday.
2>Twenty-nine hours later, at 4.50pm on 19
August 2013 (Monday), the rocket carrying telecommunication satellite GSAT-14
will lift off from Sriharikota, 100km north of Chennai.
3>GSAT-14 weighs 1,982kg, will be used
for telecast and telecommunication.
4>What makes the launch crucial for the
nation?- Use of an indigenous cryogenic engine as the upper stage. The first
attempt to use an indigenous cryogenic engine on April 15, 2010 to power
GSLV-D3 was a failure. With only one more Russian cryogenic engine left in the
Isro arsenal, success of the indigenous technology using oxygen and hydrogen in
extreme low temperatures as the fuel will propel several big ticket future
missions including a manned project to space.
5> ISRO senior scientists led by
chairman K Radhakrishnan are monitoring GSLV-D5, whose strap-boosters started
getting fuelled soon after the countdown.
6>Liquid propellants are being
filled into the second stage. Liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which fuel the
cryogenic engine will be filled around 9am on Monday. Scientists at the Satish
Dhawan Space Centre told reporters that the rocket's health and weather
conditions were fine.
7>India needs cryogenic engines to
launch GSLVs that can carry payloads weighing more than three tonnes, which
hold the key to future of telecommunication and space exploration. GSLV-D5
weighs 414 tonnes.
8> Since 1994, India has had 23
consecutive successes with the Polar Sateliite Launch Vehicles (PSLVs), an
improvised version of which was used for Chandrayaan-1 in August 2009.
9>However, PSLVs can carry only payloads
weighing up to 1.5 tonnes to a geosynchronous transfer orbit (a highly
elliptical orbit with the nearest point to earch about 200km and the farthest
42,00km) , and up to 3.5 tonnes to a low earth orbit of about 200km from earth.
10>GSLV can carry payloads weighing 2.5
tonnes to a geosynchronous transfer orbit, and up to 5 tonnes to a low earth
orbit.

be a sure question and hence chances of 03 getting confused are more. In this
post we are detailing the news importance of INS Vikrant, INS Arihant & INS
Sindhurakshak so that you won't get confused it any more!!!
INS Vikrant
1)
It is India's first ever indigenous aircraft carrier, and signifies a
degree of self-reliance in this field and was launched on 12 August 2013.
2) What does launch means?- It means that
the structure, fabricated in a dry dock, has been floated out into the sea and
anchored next to the yard.
2) It is the largest ever warship built in
India. It was constructed at Kochi in Kerala.
3) The launch made the country the fifth
that is capable of constructing aircraft carriers this size, the others being
the US, Russia, France and the UK.
4) When will the ship be inducted? - As per
current plans, the ship should be ready to steam under its own power and go for
the first round of trials by 2016-end. The ship is expected to be fit for
formal induction in the Navy by the end of 2018.
5) What are the ship's capabilities? - The
37,500-tonne carrier has been designed to attain speeds in excess of 28 knots,
and to carry 36 aircraft, 17 in the hangars and 19 on deck. It is designed to
sail for over 8,000 nautical miles in a service period over three decades. Its
main weapon will be its fighter aircraft.
6) What fighters will it carry? - A mix of
MiG 29 Ks and later Light Combat Aircraft (Naval), besides KA 31 early warning
and anti-submarine choppers and Advanced Light Helicopters for utility
missions. It will be protected against air attacks by the long-range
surface-to-air missile system being developed with Israel and will have AK 630 close-in-weapon
systems.
7) How does it compare with other ships?-
It is larger than India's sole serving carrier, the INS Virat that weights
28,000 tonnes and can carry less than 30 aircraft. The Vikrant will be the
fourth carrier to be operated by India when it joins in 2018.
INS Arihant

possess nuclear-powered submarines.
3) It was launched on July 26, 2009 and has
taken four years for its nuclear reactor to achieve criticality.
4) Its design is based on the Russian
Akula-1 class submarines, of which the best-known example is the INS Chakra.
5) The Arihant's 83Mw pressurised water
reactor has also been built with considerable assistance from the Russians, who
are said to have helped scientists at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in
miniaturising the reactor to fit into the 10m diameter hull of the nuclear
submarine.
6) It was built in a completely enclosed
dry dock at the shipbuilding centre in Vishakapatnam.
INS Sindhurakshak

incidents, a minor one in 2010 and a major one on 14 August 2013, which led to
in its sinking at Mumbai's naval dockyards.
5) Sindhurakshak was constructed in
Admiralty Shipyard, St. Petersburg. Construction of the submarine started in
1995.
