for banks to charge for withdrawals at own ATMs: RBI DG- Lashing out at the
proposal from the Indian Banks' Association to start charging customers for ATM
withdrawals, Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor K C Chakrabarty has said
that such a move on the part of banks would be 'ridiculous' and 'illogical'.

people charred to death in Mumbai-Dehradun Express fire: Nine people were
charred to death when a fire broke out in three coaches of Mumbai-Dehradun
Express train near Dahanu road in neighbouring Thane district in the wee
hours of Wednesday.

awaiting the launch of Reliance Jio's 4G connection, which promises to offer
average internet speed of 49Mbps on the go. This is over 12 times faster than
the current average of 4Mbps on the country's 3G networks. In theory, Reliance
Jio's 4G network will offer maximum speed of 112Mbps. Download speed of 49Mbps
may seem astounding for those in India, but the country will still lag far behind
the leaders in the global internet race. South Korea, widely acknowledged as
the most 'connected' nation in the world, already has the highest broadband
internet speed of 53.3Mbps and average speed of 13.3Mbps.

successfully test-fired Prithvi-II missile: India today successfully
test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile, which
has a strike range of 350 km and is capable of carrying warheads of up to 1000
kg, from a test range in Odisha. The launch was part of a user trial by the
Army. Prithvi is capable of carrying 500 kg to 1,000 kg of warheads and is
thrusted by liquid propulsion twine engines. The last user trial of Prithvi-II
missile was successfully carried out from the same base on December 3, 2013.

ISRO on 5 January 2014 (Sunday) launched a 1,982 kg Indian communication
satellite GSAT 14 aboard its new and improved version of the indigenous GSLV
called the GSLV D5.
>> The successful launch was a morale
booster for ISRO which helps commercial launches using the GSLV and even
prepare for a proposed Chandrayaan 2 mission in the days to come.
Highlights of India's GSLV D5's
mission
1) GSLV-D5 launched 1982 Kg GSAT-14, a
communication satellite, into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
2) GSLV-D5 mission was launched from the
second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
3) GSLV-D5 is the eighth flight of India's
Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). It is also the fourth
developmental flight of GSLV.
4) During this flight, the indigenously
developed Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) was flight tested for the second time.
5) The flight duration of GSLV-D5 was 17
min 8 sec.
6) GSLV D5's mission was aborted at the
eleventh hour on August 19 last year due to a fuel leak in its second stage.
ISRO stopped the countdown 74 minutes ahead of the scheduled launch at 1650
hours after noticing the leakage.
7) After reaching GTO, GSAT-14 will use its
own propulsion system to reach its geostationary orbital home.
8) GSAT-14 is the twenty third
geostationary communication satellite of India built by ISRO.
9) Four of GSAT-14's predecessors were
launched by GSLV during 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007 respectively. After its
commissioning, GSAT-14 will join the group of India's nine operational
geostationary satellites.
10) GSAT-14 will help provide many
satellite based communication services to the country including tele-education
and tele-medicine.

1) Justice
(Retd) A.K. Ganguly quits Bengal human rights panel: Former Supreme Court judge, Justice (Retd)
A.K. Ganguly has stepped down from his post as West Bengal Human Rights
Commission (WBHRC), sources said. Ganguly reportedly tendered his resignation
during a meeting with West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan on Monday evening at
the Raj Bhavan. Neither Ganguly nor Raj Bhavan sources confirmed the
development. Accused of harassing a law intern, Ganguly has been in the eye of
a storm with pressure mounting on him to step down from the post of a WBHRC
Chairman.
2) Lok Sabha elections to be held from
mid-April: Bracing for the big
exercise, the Election Commission is all set to hold Lok Sabha elections
starting mid-April and spread it over at least five phases till early May. The
much-awaited announcement for the polls is likely to be made by the end of
February or early March, for which work has already begun, top Commission
sources said.

carries out first orbit-raising manoeuvre of GSAT-14: The first
orbit-raising operation of the GSAT-14 communication satellite was successfully
carried out by ISRO on Monday, a day after it was shot into space in a
milestone launch by the GSLV-D5 rocket powered by an indigenous cryogenic
engine. The Apogee Motor on the spacecraft was fired for 3,134 seconds with a
realised orbit of 8,966 km Perigee, nearest point to earth, by 35,744 km
Apogee, the farthest point to earth, the Indian Space Research Organisation
said. ISRO said the remaining two orbit-raising operations are planned on
January 7 and 9 to place the satellite in a geostationary orbit.

Kiran, who was one the youngest winners of the Filmfare best actor award,
allegedly committed suicide at his house here last night.

elections: Awami League wins over 2/3rd seat in Parliament- Bangladesh’s
ruling Awami League won more than two-thirds of the seats in Parliament after
an election boycotted by major Opposition parties and marred by violence and
low turnout. The party led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina secured 232 out of
300 Parliamentary seats, according to preliminary results announced by the
Election Commission on Monday. The Jatiya party of former military dictator
Hussain Muhammad Ersha was second with 33 seats.

Latvia's first female prime minister. The Baltic state of Latvia is poised to
get its first female prime minister after the President and leading
parliamentary parties agreed on a single candidate. Laimdota Straujuma is

joining the Unity party over the weekend.

cuts Q5 price again, by 20% now: In
the third price reduction across models in the past six months, handset
manufacturer BlackBerry has slashed the price of its smartphone Q5 by 20 per

woman inside an ATM kiosk in Bangalore last November.

1) GSLV-D5 launched successfully : India’s reputation in rocket technology grew
as its communication satellite, carried by the hard-to-perfect Geosynchronous
Satellite Launch Vehicle, took off successfully on Sunday. Tension began to
mount four minutes after takeoff, when the country’s home-grown engine ignited.
Cheers went up when the propeller ignited successfully and sustained its
combustion. Seventeen minutes and eight seconds after takeoff, an emotional K.
Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation, said from the
Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, that the
communication satellite GSAT-14 had broken free from the launch vehicle, and
had successfully entered space. The 414-tonne GSLV-D5 carried 1,982-kg GSAT-14 communication
satellite into the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit, a league in space where the
satellite will move in tandem with the earth’s rotation.
2) R. Chandrashekhar takes over as Nasscom President: Former Telecom Secretary R. Chandrashekhar, under whom a Government IT department was set up for the first time, today took over as President of Nasscom — a body representing the $108-billion Indian IT-BPM industry. He succeeds Som Mittal, who served as the President of Nasscom from 2007-13. Chandrashekhar was the Chairman, Telecom Commission and Secretary of the Department of Telecom till March last year. Earlier, he had established the first Department of Information Technology in the country in Andhra Pradesh and was Secretary of the Department from June 1997 to December 1999.

have 4G services: Warangal will be the
first district in Andhra Pradesh to be equipped with 4G network. “A network of
150 km of optical fibre cable has been laid in the district. Only a few kilometres

may bring you under surveillance of security agencies as the government will
soon launch ‘Netra’, an internet spy system capable of detecting malafide
messages. The Home Ministry is giving finishing touches to ‘Netra’, which will
be deployed by all security agencies to capture any dubious voice traffic
passing through software like Skype or Google Talk, besides write-ups in
tweets, status updates, emails, instant messaging transcripts, internet calls,
blogs and forums.
