Israeli PM Ariel Sharon passed away:
Former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon died on Saturday at a
hospital near Tel Aviv after being in a comatose state for the past eight years
following a stroke. He was 85 years old. While serving as defence minister in
1982, he masterminded Israel's invasion of Lebanon. During the invasion, Lebanese
Christian militiamen allied to Israel massacred hundreds of Palestinians in two
Beirut refugee camps - Sabra and Shatila - under Israeli control. He was
nevertheless elected prime minister 18 years later, pledging to achieve
"security and true peace", and served until his second stroke.

journalist Ashutosh joins Aam Aadmi Party:
Television journalist Ashutosh on Saturday joined the Aam Aadmi (AAP)
Party. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and party
leader Sanjay Singh at a press conference. Ashutosh had resigned as the
Managing Editor of IBN7 on Thursday fuelling speculation that he would join the
party.
3) Chaos
marks 1st day of Kejriwal govt’s ‘janata durbar’- The first day of the
Arvind Kejriwal government’s ‘janata durbar’ (public hearing) on the streets
across the Delhi Secretariat was a scene of utter chaos on Saturday, with
uncontrollable crowds thronging the venue. The Chief Minister had to disappear
on the advice of the Delhi Police, leaving his Cabinet colleagues to handle the
swelling crowd. Later Kejriwal emerged on the rooftop and addressed the
jostling crowd, promising them another ‘janata durbar’ in four or five days.
“It will be better organised and better managed,” he declared.

duty in 2014 due to family reasons and Mahesh Bhupathi has been ignored once
again, Bopanna is the sole doubles specialist in the team.

former SC judge faces sexual harassment charge: Another former judge of the
Supreme Court has been accused of sexual harassment by a law intern who has
sought action against him by the Apex Court. Late on Friday, television
channels named a retired judge of the Supreme Court who is currently heading a tribunal
as the subject of the complaint according to which he sexually harassed her in
May, 2011 in his office when he was a sitting judge of the Apex Court.

barred from entering US: Expelled Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, in
effect, has been barred entry into the United States, with the State Department
saying that her name would be placed in visa and immigration lookout systems to
prevent routine issuance of visa.

150th birth anniversary celebrations to end on Sunday: Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the 150th
birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda in New Delhi on Sunday.

cuts: In a bid to address power cuts and load shedding problems in Delhi,

1) Send an SMS and become AAP member: Eyeing the Lok Sabha polls
later this year, the Arvind Kejriwal led-Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday
launched a country wide drive to enrol one crore members by January 26.
Announcing the ‘Main Bhi Aam Aadmi’ campaign at a press conference here, Delhi
Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal said people aspiring to join the
AAP across the country could SMS on a toll-free number – 0779822033 – or give a
missed call. “The membership number will be sent via SMS,” he said. He
clarified that one mobile number would record only one membership.
2) Devyani
Khobragade left US after indictment in visa fraud case: Senior Indian
diplomat Devyani Khobragade was on Friday indicted for visa fraud and making
false statements by a grand jury which held that the charges against her will
remain even as she headed back to India after being accorded full diplomatic
immunity. The charges against 39-year-old Khobragade will remain and she will
have to face trial, if she returns to the US without diplomatic immunity, US
Attorney Preet Bharara said in a letter to District Judge Shira Scheindlin.

to launch Chandrayaan-II by 2017: India will launch the second ambitious
mission to land a rover in the next two to three years. The Chandrayaan-II will
have indigenously developed rover and a lander using the Geo-Synchronous Launch
Vehicle (GSLV). “Chandrayaan-II is a mission where we essentially need to move
on (lunar) surface to conduct experiments. We will launch Chandrayaan-II with
an indigenous rover and lander using GSLV by 2016 or 2017,” Space Secretary K.
Radhakrishnan said at a press conference. Chandrayaan-I, India’s first mission
to Moon, was launched successfully on October 22, 2008 from Sriharikota.

launches new Jeevan Anand plan: LIC has re-launched its “Jeevan Anand”
plan, a participating non-linked plan which offers an attractive combination of
protection and savings. This product provides financial protection against
death throughout the lifetime of the policyholder with a special feature
wherein it offers cover for whole life even after payment of maturity amount.
The policy can be taken from age 18 years to 50 years with age of policyholder
on policy maturity age not exceeding 75 years. The policyholder can choose
policy term from minimum 15 years to maximum of 35 years. The minimum sum
assured is Rs 1 lakh and in multiples of Rs 5,000.

Gandhi, Ramakrishna Mission get Pravasi Bharatiya award: Mahatma Gandhi's
grand-daughter Ela Gandhi, Australian senator of Indian origin Lisa Maria Singh
and Ramkrishna Mission in Fiji were among the 13 recipients of Pravasi
Bharatiya Samman Award conferred in New Delhi on Thursday. Ela Gandhi has been
awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman for public service, enhancing India's
image and promoting ties between India and South Africa. President Pranab
Mukherjee conferred the awards to the winners at the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas
programme in New Delhi.

1) Election
Commission aborts tie-up with Google over security concerns: Election
Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday said it has decided not to pursue a voter
facilitation service proposed by Google for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Google had made a presentation to the Commission, proposing to make available
free online voter registration besides making available details of voter card
numbers and polling station location. The proposal from Google had drawn
criticism from some cyber experts who said that the project could be a
potential security concern in the light of recent expose of how US Government
was secretly accessing user information using platforms such as Google and
Facebook.
2) President
of South Korea, Park Geun-hye to visit India: President of South Korea,
Park Geun-hye, will pay a state visit from January 15-18, the Ministry of
External Affairs announced on Thursday. During the visit, the visiting
dignitary will hold delegation level talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
and discuss bilateral, regional and global issues, the statement adds.

ranks near bottom of nuclear material security index: India has been ranked
below its two nuclear-armed neighbours – Pakistan and China – in the list of
countries with a weak nuclear material security in the world, according to a
US-based think-tank. In the 2014 Nuclear Threat Initiative’s Nuclear Materials
Security Index released yesterday, India has been ranked 23rd out of 25
countries with weapons-usable nuclear materials.

Tax dept withdraws tax exemption to four cricket associations: Tax
authorities on Thursday withdrew exemptions granted to four regional cricket
associations–Saurashtra, Baroda, Kerala and Maharashtra. The Central Board of
Direct Taxes (CBDT), which is looking into the affairs of these associations,
found that they were engaged in certain activities considered commercial in
nature in view of the amended provisions of the Income-Tax Act, 1961.

formally rejoined BJP: B S Yeddyurappa, whose tenure as Chief Minister was
marked by charges of corruption and nepotism, rejoined BJP merging his
Karnataka Janata Paksha with it, a year after his exit from the parent party.

headquarters, as the party seeks to revive its fortunes in Lok Sabha polls with
his pan state image combined with his appeal as Lingayat strongman.
