Daily Current Affairs: 19 January 2014

1) Netherlands won inaugural Hockey World League title: Constantijn Jonker scored a hat-trick as the Netherlands thumped New Zealand 7-2 to win the inaugural Hockey World League in New Delhi on 18 January 2014. The Dutch, who stunned reigning world champions Australia in the semi-finals, outplayed the Black Sticks in a one-sided final at the Dhyan Chand Stadium in the Indian capital. The International Hockey Federation's (FIH) newest competition opened with 54 teams in August 2012, and, after three rounds played around the world, the top seven joined hosts India for the title round in New Delhi. England took third place with a 2-1 win over Australia earlier on Saturday while India finished at sixth place.

2) Centre issues directive for 150 days work under MGNREGA for STs in forest areas: Ministry of Rural Development has issued a directive to provide 150 days of wage employment under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for Scheduled Tribe households living in forest areas. The move will benefit about eight lakh people in the states like Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.

3) NSE top-ranked globally for equity trades for 2nd year in 2013:  The National Stock Exchange (NSE) retained its position as the world's largest bourse in terms of number of equity trades for the second consecutive year in 2013, while China's Shenzhen Exchange overtook the NYSE as the second largest.

4) Dhoni becomes first Indian keeper to cross 300 dismissals:  Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday became the first Indian wicketkeeper and the fourth overall to effect 300 dismissals in one-day internationals when he caught a Ross Taylor nick in the opening ODI against New Zealand. With this, he joined a legendary club which features the celebrated trio of Australia's Adam Gilchrist (472 dismissals in 287 matches), Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (424 dismissals in 362 matches) and South Africa's Mark Boucher (424 dismissals in 295 matches).

5) Technopark in Kerala becomes nation's largest IT park:  Technopark situated in the capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram has become the largest IT park in the country with chief minister Oommen Chandy inaugurating the Phase III of the project. Now, Technopark has a 333-acre campus and 285 companies, making it the country's largest and the greenest IT park. Technopark is all set for further expansion as around 451 acre of land is reserved for Technocity in Phase IV, thus increasing the total available space to 784 acres.

6) Serena Willimas out of Australian Open 2014: Serena Williams' pursuit of history has been put on hold. The 32-year-old American had been hoping to win her 18th Grand Slam title, which would have put her equal with Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, but the injury jinx which has dashed her hopes at the last three Australian Opens struck again here. Struggling with a back injury, Williams suffered only her sixth defeat in the last 20 months when she was beaten 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday by Ana Ivanovic.

7) Wal-Mart sets up new company in India: Global retail giant Wal-Mart has registered a new company in India as it prepares to enter the country's lucrative multibrand retail market with a new partner. The retailer has registered a new company called 'Wal-Mart India Private Ltd' in the country, according to the data available with the ministry of corporate affairs.

8) New Zealand defeat India by 24 runs in first ODI: Despite Virat Kohli's sparking ton hosts New Zealand staged a thrilling 24-run win against India in the first cricket one-dayer at Napier today. With this New Zealand has taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.


9) Cyrus Mistry wins DSC Prize for 2014: Reticent author Cyrus Mistry on Saturday beat off stiff competition from five other writers to become the fourth winner of the $50,000 DSC prize for South Asian literature on Saturday for his book “Chronicles of a Corpse Bearer”. The prize, is given to the best work or translations of a work on or about the South Asian region. Last year the award was won by Jeet Thayil for his debut debut novel “Narcopolis”. Mr. Mistry was presented with the award at a ceremony at the Jaipur Literature Festival.

SSC CGL 2014: Procedure for Online Submission of Application/How to apply online


Friends…as you Know SSC has notified the CGL Exam 2014. Application can be submitted online as well as offline. When compared to offline now a days many prefer online submission of application thanks to the easy procedure. For those who have not yet applied online for CGL Exam given below is the directions for online submission of application. This is as per the procedure given in the notification. Remember last date is upto 12.02.2014 5.00PM only. Without waiting for the last rush…complete the procedure as early as possible.

1. On-line application facility will be available from 19.01.2014 to 12.02.2014 (5:00PM) for Part –I Registration and up to 14.02.2014 (5:00 PM) for Part - II Registration.
2. Online submission of the application may be made at website http://ssconline.nic.in  AND http://ssconline2.gov.in  Instructions are available at the site. Candidate should read the instructions carefully before making any entry or selecting options. Candidate should supply all the required details while filling up the online form. Mandatory fields are marked with * (asterisk) sign.

The filling of online application contains two parts :
Part I Registration
Part II Registration
3. In Part I registration, candidate will have to fill basic information. On submission of details, candidate will be prompted to check the details and make any correction in the application.
4. Candidate may press ―I agree button after declaration once he/she finds that information supplied by him/her is in order and no correction is required. Thereafter no correction/modification etc. will be allowed.

5. A page with Registration No. will now be generated. Note down the registration number or take out the print out of the page. The application procedure is incomplete without part II registration. Part II registration requires filling of payment details, uploading of photograph and scanned signature. Candidates may note that the Registration number given by the Commission and Transaction ID of the Bank should be properly entered in the relevant space, failing which it will not be possible to link the payment with Part I registration. On-line application will be complete only if scanned signature and photo are uploaded as per instructions. Incomplete online application will be rejected summarily.

6. Candidates who have to pay application fee can pay fee online through SBI net banking, or cash through SBI bank challan.

7. To pay fee in cash, candidate should take print out of challan generated online after completion of part I registration. Deposit the requisite fee in pay branch of State Bank of India and then continue with the Part II registration.

8. Those who want to pay online through SBI net banking, can go directly to part II registration after completion of part I. Candidate will have to supply registration number and date of birth to continue to Part II registration.
9. As approval of the Controller General of Accounts, Ministry of Finance is awaited for use of credit cards / debit cards since January,2010, payment through these modes will not be available.
10. Those who are exempted from payment of fee can skip steps 6 to 8.

11. Then upload a recently taken scanned photograph in 8 – bit JPG format. The digital size of the file must be less than 12 kb and greater than 4 kb and of resolution 100 pixel widths by 120 pixels height.
12. Then upload your scanned signature in JPG format. The digital size of the file must be less than 12 kb and greater than 1 kb and of resolution 140 pixel width by 60 pixels height
13. Emails will be received by the candidates on completion of Part-II Registration. Copy of email may be retained to produce before the Regional Office in the event of any discrepancy.
14. Candidates are advised to go through the instructions carefully before filling up the application form.
15. Request for change/correction in any particulars in the Application Form shall not be entertained under any circumstances. The Staff Selection Commission will not be responsible for any consequences arising out of non acceptance of any correction/addition/deletion in any particular filled in application form whatever the reasons may be.

16. Copy of challan through which fee is paid or details of online payment must retained and produced on demand.

1) Adarsh scam: Court rejects CBI plea for dropping Ashok Chavan’s name- In a setback to Maharashtra's former chief minister Ashok Chavan, a special court on Saturday rejected the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)'s plea to drop his name from the list of accused in the Adarsh scam case.

2) Sunanda Pushkar Tharoor cremated: The mortal remains of Sunanda Pushkar, who was found dead in mysterious circumstances at a luxury hotel on Friday night, were consigned to flames in presence of her family members. Meanwhile, Doctors at AIIMS, who conducted autopsy on the body of Sunanda Pushkar, on Saturday said that it was a case of "sudden, unnatural death" but ruled out poisoning even as police investigated various angles into death of Union Minister Shashi Tharoor's wife.

3) 18 people dead at Mumbai in Stampede: 18 people were dead following a stampede in Mumbai in a rush to pay last respects to the spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin.

4) Subsidised LPG cylinder quota to be increased to 12: Moily- With Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi making a strong pitch for raising LPG cap, Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily on Friday said the quota of subsidised cooking cylinders will be hiked to 12 from 9 per household.

5) Peshawar is world's 'largest reservoir' of polio: WHO- With over 90 percent of Pakistan's polio cases genetically linked to Peshawar, the World Health Organization on Friday described the northwestern city as the world's "largest reservoir" of endemic polio virus.

6) RBI puts brakes on bitcoin trade in India: Enthusiasm over bitcoins has dampened in India after the country’s central bank cautioned investors to be wary of using virtual currency because of the associated security, financial and legal risks.

7) Bhupathi out of men’s doubles at Australian Open: Mahesh Bhupathi in all probability played his last men’s doubles match at the Australian Open when he and his American partner Rajeev Ram lost their second round match against second-seeded Alexander Peya of Austria and Bruno Soares of Brazil in Melbourne on Saturday.

8) Lusofonia Games to begin in Goa from today: Over 800 athletes from 12 Portuguese-speaking countries will be slugging it out for glory at the Lusofonia Games, which will begin in Goa on Saturday. The Lusofonia Games 2014 are the third edition of the Portuguese Commonwealth Games. The first two were held in Macau in 2006 and in Lisbon in 2009.

Download IBPS Specialist Officer III Exam Call Letters/ Admit Card

IBPS has now provided the call letter download link for the upcoming IBPS Specialist Officers III online exam 2014. IBPS is conducting this examination for recruitment of various specialist officers posts, I.T. Officers (Scale-I and II), Marketing Officer s(Scale I), HR/Personnel Officers (Scale I), Agricultural Field Officers (Scale I), Technical Officers (Scale I), Chartered Accountants (Scale  II) and Law Officers (Scale I and II). The exams are scheduled for 8th and 9th February 2014.
