Padma Awards Winners 2014: PDF Download

The President of India has approved conferment of 127 Padma Awards including one duo case (counted as one) as per the list below. The list comprises two Padma Vibhushan, 24 Padma Bhushan and 101 Padma Shri Awardees.  27 of the Awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of foreigners, NRIs, PIOs and Posthumous Awardees.

Padma Awards, the country’s highest civilian awards, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. The awards are conferred by the President of India at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan sometime around March/ April.

Li Na wins Australian Open 2014 women's singles title


>> Li Na made it third time lucky in the Australian Open final, beating Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 7-6 (3), 6-0 on Saturday to become the oldest woman to clinch the title in the Open era. In doing so, she became the oldest winner of the women's title, surpassing Margaret Court who was 30 when she became champion in 1973.

>> Li, who turns 32 next month, lost Australian Open finals to Kim Clijsters in 2011 and Victoria Azarenka last year. In between, she won the 2011 French Open to become the first Chinese woman to win a major.

1) National Girl Child Day observed: National Girl Child Day was observed across the nation on 24 Jan 2014. This day is observed every year to raise awareness and consciousness towards the girl child. Union Government has been observing January 24 as National Girl Child Day from 2008. National Girl Child Day commemorates the day when Indira Gandhi was sworn in as the first woman prime minister of the country on January 24, 1966. The Ministry of Women and Child Development comes up with various events that focus towards reducing child sex ratio in the country, and to ensure that every girl child is given an equal opportunity.

2) India, China launched Year of Friendly Exchanges: India and China on Friday launched the Year of Friendly Exchanges at a colourful Republic Day reception in New Delhi attended by Vice President Li Yuanchao, who said Beijing is committed to taking the strategic partnership to new heights.

3) SBI launched Youtube channel; Twitter handle next: Nation's largest lender State Bank of India on Friday strengthened its social media presence with the launch of its channel on popular video sharing website Youtube and said it will also be launching its handle on the micro-blogging site Twitter soon.

4) National Bravery Awards Presented: Lauding young bravehearts as the ‘nation’s pride’ and their courageous acts as an ‘inspiration’ to all, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday presented the National Bravery Awards to 25 children ahead of Republic Day.

5) Rajasthan, Tripura, Karnataka, Delhi bag EC award for best electoral practices: The four states of Rajasthan, Tripura, Karnataka and Delhi have been selected by the Election Commission for an award of excellence for having the best electoral practices and introducing innovative measures which saw them achieve high turnouts in Assembly polls last year.

6) French First Lady to visit India:  French First Lady Valerie Trierweiler will make her first public appearance since it emerged President Francois Hollande was cheating on her with an actress, with a trip to India next week for charity work. She will visit Mumbai for two days from Monday on a trip organised by French relief organisation Action Against Hunger (ACF) which had been planned long in advance.

7) Woman officer gets CRPF honour: Savita Kumari of the Central Reserve Police Force was presented a `Sword of Honour` at a passing out parade after being selected the best all-round trainee.

8) 16 nations to participate in Indian Navy's MILAN 2014: A total of 16 navies from the Indian Ocean Region are participating in 'MILAN 2014', the biennial international naval exercise conducted by the Indian Navy in Andaman and Nicobar Islands between February 5 and 9. Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Thailand have confirmed their participation, a Navy spokesman said.

9) Congress released poll ad, BJP says it has 'copied' Narendra Modi: Congress on Friday released its first advertisement for the Lok Sabha polls, but main Opposition BJP targeted it saying the party has "copied" Narendra Modi's ad blitz at a BJP convention in 2011. Rahul Gandhi is at the centrestage of the campaign 'Mein Nahi, Hum' (Not I, we) which appeared in newspapers on Friday. Dismissing BJP's charges of plagiarism, Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza insisted that no one has sole proprietary right on words and ideas.

10) Catherine Samba-Panza becomes the first woman president of war-torn Central African Republic. She is the third interim president this country has seen this month after Alexandre-Ferdinand Nguendet (which she replaces) and Michel Djotodia.    

11) Kiran Mazumdar Shaw won 2014 Othmer Gold Medal: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of the country’s largest biotech research firm, Biocon Ltd, has been named winner of the 2014 Othmer Gold Medal, a top award of the US-based Chemical Heritage Foundation. Shaw is also known as India’s biotech queen for her pioneering work in biotech research. She will be conferred the prestigious award in March at Philadelphia, where the Foundation is based, a Biocon spokesperson told.

12) DMK strips Alagiri of all party posts:  Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) has temporarily suspended its south zone organising secretary, MK Alagiri, who is also a son of party chief M Karunanidhi, from all party posts. A statement from the party called it a “disciplinary action” against the 62-year-old former Union minister for indulging in “unnecessary arguments” and working against party interests.

13) Tirath launched Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Programme on National Girl Child Day:  Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath launched a Multi Sectoral Nutrition Programme (MSNP) and National Resource Platform (NRP) on the occasion of National Girl Child Day. .

14) India Posts to start rolling out ATMs from February: In anticipation of getting a banking licence from the Reserve Bank of India, the Department of Posts will roll out its own ATMs, with the first of them set to be functional on February 5 across three cities. The currency dispensers are being launched for the Department’s more than 26 crore savings bank account holders.

59th Filmfare Awards 2014: Complete List of Winners

 In the 59th Idea Filmfare Awards 2014 presented for films from the year 2013, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, the incredibly realistic biopic of sprint champion Milkha Singh, scored three out of the top four awards including best actor, best director and best film. The picture won a total of six prizes. The star-studded awards ceremony was held at YashRaj Studio in Andheri, Mumbai on 24 January 2014 (Friday) evening.


Farhan Akhtar outran other nominees in the race for best actor while Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra gained winning position as best director. Deepika Padukone, who was expected to win best actress given she had two nominations, won for Goliyon Ki Raasleela, Ramleela. Leading the list of nominations were films that pleased the box office in 2013, even if not all of them made it to the Rs 100-crore club. Chennai Express shared space with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Ramleela and Raanjhanaa. 1) India celebrated 117th birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose: Indians across the country, with the Bengali community leading, on Thursday celebrated the 117th birth anniversary of the country's nationalist leader Subhas Chandra Bose, who is more fondly and better known as 'Netaji' or 'Respected Leader'. Netaji's birthday anniversary is celebrated every year with great honour by government and non-government organisations. The day is also known as 'Desh Prem Diwas' and is observed as a holiday in West Bengal, beginning with flag hoisting ceremony in several localities, to pay tribute to the national leader.

2) Li to face Cibulkova in Australian open women singles final: China’s Li Na will play Slovak Dominika Cibulkova in Saturday’s Women’s final at the Australian Open after both mowed down opponents in just over an hour. Li, who will bid for a second Grand Slam title to back up her 2011 Roland Garros trophy, on Thursday entered her third title match at Melbourne Park, fighting off a charge from Canadian teenager Eugenie Bouchard 6-2, 6-4 in 64 minutes to win their semi-final. It took Cibulkova six minutes longer to fulfill her part of the Sino-Slovak bargain with the diminutive Eastern European crushing fifth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-1, 6-2.

3) Saina Nehwal slips to 9th in BWF rankings: India`s Olympic bronze medallist shuttler Saina Nehwal dropped a place to be at ninth position, while P V Sindhu retained her 11th spot in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings issued Thursday.

4) Study says Violence, disease caused end of Indus Valley Civilization: Inter-personal violence, infectious diseases and climate change had played a major role in the demise of the Indus or Harappan civilization around 4,000 years ago, according to a new study. Climate, economic, and social changes all played a role in the process of urbanization and collapse, but little was known about how these changes affected the human population, Dr Gwen Robbins Schug, an associate professor of anthropology at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, explained in a statement.

5) 'Security picket' on board trains now: Railways have decided to earmark berth no 71 in coach S-1 in all the trains having security escort, which will act as a sort of security picket. The idea of having a dedicated berth for the security personnel is to help passengers to locate them easily in case of some emergency, a railway official said.

6) LCA Tejas to be star attraction of DRDO's R-Day Parade contingent:  Tejas, the Indian Light Combat Aircraft, is going to be the star attraction amongst the products displayed as part of the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) contingent at the Republic Day parade. 7) Huffington Post plans India edition: US-based leading online newspaper Huffington Post is planning to launch an India edition by May this year and negotiations are currently under way to finalise a local partner for this venture.

8) Kerala wins UN award for sustainable tourism: Kerala Tourism has been conferred the United Nations Award for creating innovative initiatives for sustainable tourism, the first time India has ever won the recognition.
The state got the honour for its sustainable development initiative in the world renowned backwater resort of Kumarakom, a Kerala tourism release said on Thursday. Kerala Tourism bagged the honour on 22 Jan 2014 at the annual United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism presented at Madrid in Spain.

9) Alok Sinha is new AAI Chairman: In a late evening development on Thursday, the Chairman, Airports Authority of India, V P Agarwal was removed. He is being replaced by the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Alok Sinha, who has been given additional charge of the new post. Sinha handles airport related matters in the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

13) Kailash Meghwal elected as Rajasthan Assembly Speaker: BJP MLA Kailash Meghwal was on Wednesday elected unopposed as Speaker of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. Meghwal's motion was proposed by Nand Lal Meena, BJP tribal minister and seconded by Narayan Singh of Congress. The motion was passed by a voice vote in the House amid thumping of tables by all members.
