Daily Current Affairs: 18 February 2014

1) Telangana bill passed in Lok Sabha: The contentious bill that will split Andhra Pradesh and allow the creation of Telangana, India’s 29th state, made it through the Lok Sabha Tuesday despite opposition, tumultuous scenes and a controversial “blackout” of the live TV broadcast of the proceedings. The house passed the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Bill, 2014, by voice vote even as those opposed to it demanded a division vote and termed the process a “sham” and a “black day for democracy”. Once approved by both houses of the Parliament, the bill will be sent to President for his assent.
 
2) Supreme Court commutes death penalty of Rajiv Gandhi's killers to life term: Supreme Court on Tuesday commuted the death penalty of Rajiv Gandhi's killers to life term, citing the 11-year delay in deciding their mercy pleas. With this, the three convicts on death row in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case — Santhan, Murugan and Perarivalan — have been spared the gallows. A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam rejected the Centre's submission that there was no unreasonable delay in deciding their mercy plea and the condemned prisoners did not go through agonizing experience as they were enjoying life behind the bars. Rajiv Gandhi was killed in May 1991. His assassins were convicted by a TADA court in January 1998 and were awarded death sentence, which was confirmed by the apex court May 11, 1999.

3) National Tourism Award 2012-13 presented: Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh jointly bagged the National Tourism Award for Best State/UT in the 'Comprehensive Development of Tourism' category. Kerala and Gujarat secured the 2nd and 3rd prize respectively. Sikkim clinches the best state award for implementing Rural Tourism Project. MoS for HRD Shashi Tharoor presented the awards at a function held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Tuesday.

4) Killa, a Marathi film bagged Crystal Bear award at 64th Berlin International Film Festival: Killa, a Marathi film on 17 February 2014 won the Crystal Bear (Glasernen Bar) for the best film award by the Children’s jury in Generation Kplus section at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.  The film has been directed by Avinash Arun.    

5) China overtakes India as top gold consumer: China overtook India as the world’s largest consumer market for gold with a jump of 32 per cent last year, the World Gold Council said on Tuesday. Chinese consumers bought 1,066 tonnes of gold products in 2013, while their Indian counterparts bought 975 tonnes, up 13 per cent from 2012, the London-based council reported.

6) HAL to spearhead effort to set up aerospace university: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. has announced that it has set the ball rolling for the country’s first full-fledged aerospace university. HAL would spearhead the effort to meet the long-felt and future needs of the growing aeronautical sector, a company release said on Tuesday.

7) Eminent Carnatic vocalist R K Srikantan passed away: Eminent Carnatic vocalist R K Srikantan passed away in a private hospital in Seshadripuram on Monday night at the age of 94. Winner of the Padma Bhushan, Srikantan was on September 3, 2013, presented Chembai Swamy Puraskaram by K J Yesudas at his Seshadripuram home.

1) Interim budget 2014-15/Vote on Account 2014 presented: Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s interim budget 2014-15 presented on Monday targeted key middle-class constituencies ahead of the elections with offerings to armed forces pensioners, nine lakh young education loan borrowers, and aspiring car and two-wheeler buyers. This being an interim budget, the Finance Minister kept untouched personal and corporate income tax rates and surcharges on them. It was Chidambaram’s eighth budget and the 82nd for India, including interim and special-situation budgetary proposals, since the first one of independent India was presented by then Finance Minister R K Shanmukham Chetty on November 6, 1947.

2) India enter U-19 Cricket World Cup quarter finals: Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav became the first Indian bowler to grab a hat-trick in the Under-19 World Cup before the defending champions entered the quarter-finals with a patchy five-wicket win over Scotland in their low-scoring Group A match in Dubai on Monday. The Indians are on top in their group with two wins out of two and just one match to go.

3) President's rule imposed in Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee has imposed President's rule in Delhi and accepted the Arvind Kejriwal government's resignation, authorities said on Monday. "The President, on the advice of Union Cabinet, has imposed President's rule in Delhi. The resignation of Arvind Kejriwal, chief minister of Delhi, along with his council of ministers, has been accepted by the President with immediate effect," said the press release issued by lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung's office on Monday. Official sources said the assembly will be kept in suspended animation.

4) Tarun Tejpal charged with rape, sexual harassment: Tehelka founder and former editor Tarun Tejpal was on Monday charged by Goa police with rape, sexual harassment and outraging modesty of a woman journalist in a lift of a five-star hotel in November last year. If proven guilty, Tejpal can be sentenced for more than seven years of imprisonment on these charges.

5) Govt announces one rank, one pension for military personnel in budget: In an attempt to woo more than 25 lakh ex-servicemen barely two months before the general elections, the Congress-led UPA government on Monday announced that it has accepted the "one rank, one pension"(OROP) principle for the forces. The mega announcement comes three days after Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi endorsed OROP after meeting a delegation of more than 1,000 ex-servicemen last Friday.

6) Government gears to push T-Bill on Tuesday: As a determined UPA government gears up to push through the Telangana Bill in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, two Union Ministers met top BJP leaders on Monday to get it on board. Among the BJP leaders whom Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh met were L.K. Advani, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and M. Venkaiah Naidu.

7) Matteo Renzi Sets Out to Form New Italy Government: The mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi, accepted the task of trying to form a new coalition government on Monday and promised rapid and ambitious action meant to win over potential partners and shake up the country. If successful, Mr. Renzi, 39 years old, would become the youngest premier in Italy's history. He led the revolt against his center-left Democratic Party colleague Enrico Letta and forced him to resign as prime minister on Friday.

8) Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation sets Guinness record by conducting largest blood donation camp: A blood donation camp organized by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation as part of chief minister J Jayalalithaa's 66th birthday celebrations has set the Guinness World Record for being the largest such event conducted at multiple venues. As many as 53,129 people donated blood in Chennai, Villupuram, Vellore, Salem, Coimbatore, Karur, Trichy, Kumbakonam, Madurai and Tirunelveli on February 14 and 18,439.28 litres of blood were collected.

9) Pakistan appoints Abdul Basit as its High Commissioner to India: Pakistan on Monday named Abdul Basit as it's High Commissioner to India. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan formally announced his appointment as Pakistan's High Commissioner to India on Monday in the afternoon. However, it was unknown when would he replace Salman Bashir, pakistan's current High Commissioner to India. According to a press note issued from Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdul Basit is serving Pakistan's Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany currently. 

10) Rakesh Maria is new Mumbai Police chief: Rakesh Maria, head of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad, was named Mumbai’s new Police Commissioner on Saturday, two weeks after his predecessor Satyapal Singh resigned to join the BJP. A 1981-batch officer, Mr. Maria was selected over his immediate seniors Vijay Kamble and Satish Mathur for the most coveted position in the Maharashtra Police.

12) Nirbhaya Fund gets additional Rs 1,000 crore in budget: Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Monday allocated Rs 1,000 crore to the Nirbhaya Fund for the safety and empowerment of women. "In order to make it clear that the Nirbhaya Fund will be a prominent fund, I intend to declare the grant of Rs 1,000 crore as non-lapsable and in order to support more proposals, I propose to contribute to the fund another Rs 1,000 crore next year," Chidambaram said while presenting the interim budget in Parliament. The Rs 1,000-crore Nirbhaya Fund was announced in last year's Union Budget as a tribute to a gang-rape victim who died of her injuries.

1) 67th BAFTA Awards presented: The 67th British Academy Film Awards more commonly known as the BAFTAs, were held at the Royal Opera House in London on 16 February 2014 honouring the best national and foreign films of 2013. Presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), accolades are handed out for the best in feature-length film and documentaries of any nationality, that were screened at British cinemas during 2013. “12 Years A Slave” won the best movie award while “Gravity” won Best British film award. Chiwetel Ejiofor won the best actor award for 12 Years a Slave while Cate Blanchett won the best actress award. Gravity won highest number of awards including awards for best cinematography, best sound, best original music and best special visual effects.

2) Union Cabinet approved President's rule in Delhi:  Union Cabinet on Saturday decided to impose President's rule in Delhi following the resignation of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and his council of ministers on Friday. The assembly will now be kept in suspended animation. Delhi's lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung had earlier sent a report to the Union home ministry recommending imposition of President's rule in the state while keeping the assembly under suspended animation.

3) Brendon McCullum, BJ Watling post highest sixth-wicket partnership in Test history: Brendon McCullum and BJ Watling posted the highest-ever partnership for the sixth wicket in Test cricket history in the Second Test Match against India. The duo got past the record set by Mahela Jayawardene and Prasanna Jayawardene. The Sri Lankan pair added 351 runs against India at Ahmedabad in 2009.

4) Purshottam Express gets first Braille-embedded coach: Purshottam Express is slated to become the first train in the country to have a Braille-embedded AC coach for the visually-challenged passengers. In a first of its kind, the Railways have manufactured an AC three-tier coach with Braille signages to be operational by the end of this month in the Delhi-Puri superfast Purshottam Express as part of its social commitment to make trains and stations more friendly towards specially-abled passengers. At present, the coaches are provided with signages, instructions, seat numbers, which are mostly in the form of vinyl stickers or metallic plates and have no Braille characters and cannot be read by visually-impaired passengers.

5) Bharti Airtel set to acquire Loop Mobile in a Rs 700-crore deal:  Bharti Airtel is set to acquire Loop Mobile in a Rs 700-crore deal that may be announced as early as this week in what will be the first consolidation move in the country's telecom industry since 2008, taking India's biggest operator to the top spot in Mumbai. As part of the deal, Bharti Airtel will get Loop’s 3 million subscribers, about 400 telecom towers, optic fibre network and electronic equipment on which the Loop’s network currently runs.

6) Indian flag raised at Winter Olympics Games Village in Sochi: India completed its return to the Olympic family on Sunday when its flag was hoisted at the Sochi Games, five days after the International Olympic Committee lifted its suspension on the South Asian nation. India had been banned since December 2012 after elections at its Olympic association (IOA) saw a corruption-tainted official voted in as secretary general. The IOC lifted the ban on February 11 following fresh elections last week, allowing it to be represented at the Olympics and bringing the total number of nations competing at Russia's first Winter Games to 88.

7) Google acquires SlickLogin Israeli security start-up: Global internet giant Google is acquiring SlickLogin, an Israeli developer of sound-based password alternative, in an "acqui-hiring deal", which means SlickLogin's staff and knowledge will be integrated into Google, SlickLogin confirmed the deal on its website Sunday. SlickLogin offers an alternative process for login confirmation by using sound based passwords. Post this acquisition, Google might use this type of authentication method to replace its 2-step verification method in Gmail which is being currently used.

8) China to build world’s longest underwater tunnel: China plans to build the world’s longest underwater tunnel beneath the Bohai Sea by 2026, connecting the port cities of Dalian in Liaoning province and Yantai in Shandong province. The blueprint of the ambitious project is expected to be submitted to the State Council of the People’s Republic of China in April, the China Daily reported on Friday.

1)  Delhi Lt Governor recommends President's rule in Delhi: Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung has recommended for President's rule in his report submitted to the President on Saturday on the follow up action in the wake of resignation of the Aam Aadmi Party Government. LG has also rejected recommendation for dissolution of Delhi Assembly and suggested suspended animation of Delhi assembly.

2) Japan’s Rakuten to buy Viber messaging app for $900 million: Japan’s largest online retailer Rakuten Inc said on Friday it would purchase messaging app provider Viber Media Ltd for $900 million in a move that would more than double its number of registered users. Rakuten “decided to acquire Viber to strengthen its global platform through the use of Viber’s range of customers in the Japanese company’s e-commerce and digital contents services,” company chairman Hiroshi Mikitani said in a statement.

3) AAP to contest LS polls under Kejriwal’s leadership: A day after Arvind Kejriwal stepped down as Delhi Chief Minister, Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday made it clear that it would contest the Lok Sabha polls under his leadership.

4) U19 World Cup- India won the 1st match beating Pakistan: Defending champions India opened their campaign in style coasting to a 40-run win against Pakistan in a Group A match of the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup at Dubai International Stadium on Saturday. Chasing a record total of 263, Pakistan were bowled out for 222 in 48.4 overs despite a despite a century opening stand between skipper Sami Aslam (64) and Imam ul Haq (39). Off break bowler Deepak Hooda wreaked havoc thereafter ripping through the middle order to claim five for 41.

5) Ajinkya Rahane slams maiden Test Century: On Saturday, Ajinkya Rahane helped India put up a big score after they managed to bowl New Zealand out yesterday for less than 200 runs. Rahane scored his maiden Test hundred as he finished with 118 runs. India scored 438 runs in their first innings and had a lead of 246 runs. Before this Rahane's best score in Test cricket was 96 runs, which he made against South Africa in Durban.

6) Candidates can e-file nominations in Lok Sabha polls:  Candidates for the Lok Sabha elections would be able to e-file their nominations and affidavits, in a move aimed to bring about faster dissemination of information about the candidates, Election Commissioner H.S. Brahma said Saturday. The e-filing, a web-based form, would be in addition to filing the nomination in paper form. The Election Commission will soon ask the government to modify the current rules to make e-filing mandatory.

7) ICICI Bank opens 24X7 self-service electronic branches: ICICI Bank has opened sixty-one 24x7 electronic branches across 33 cities. Eight of these electronic branches are in Tamil Nadu, including one at Coimbatore. The project is currently in the trial phase. “This initiative of an automated branch offering self-service solutions round-the-clock aims to provide customers an opportunity to leverage technology and transact at their convenience,” its Executive Director Rajiv Sabharwal said.
