The 86th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the actors, technical achievements, and films of 2013 and took place on March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The ceremony was scheduled one week later than usual to avoid conflict with the broadcast of the 2014 Winter Olympics. During the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented awards in 24 categories.


Gravity won seven awards, the most for the ceremony, including Best Director for Alfonso Cuarón. 12 Years a Slave won three awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o. Dallas Buyers Club also won three awards, becoming the fifth film in history to win both the Academy Award for Best Actor and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto respectively. Other winners included Frozen and The Great Gatsby, with two awards each. Cate Blanchett won the Best Actress award for Blue Jasmine. Other films to win one award were The Great Beauty, Helium, Her, The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life, Mr Hublot, and 20 Feet from Stardom. Cuarón and Catherine Martin were the only individuals to win multiple awards, with two trophies each. Here is the complete list of winners:

1) Cabinet okays inclusion of jats in OBC list: The Cabinet on Sunday approved the inclusion of jats in the central list of OBCs that defines the eligibility for 27% Mandal reservations. Jats can now avail reservation in central jobs and educational institutions, a decision taken by possibly the last Cabinet meeting of UPA-2 in what is a desperate Congress gambit to woo the community ahead of elections.


2) South Africa won maiden ICC U19 Cricket World Cup title: South Africa won its maiden ICC U19 Cricket World Cup title when it defeated two-time former champion Pakistan by six wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday. Fast bowler Corbin Bosch saved his best performance in the tournament for the title match when he claimed four for 15, and wicketkeeper Clyde Fortuin collected six catches behind the wickets as Pakistan was bundled out for 131 in 44.3 overs after electing to bat first.
>> South Africa captain Aiden Markram was declared player of the tournament for scoring 370 runs in the tournament, which saw him strike two centuries and one half-century.

In a tense encounter where fortunes fluctuating from one team to other till very end saw Afridi the turn the game decisively in Pakistan's favour by hitting successive sixes in Ravichandran Ashwin's last over to overhaul India's modest total of 245.

4) Manchester City won Capital One Cup final at Wembley: Manuel Pellegrini won his first trophy as Manchester City manager as his side came from behind to beat Sunderland 3—1 at Wembley in final of Capital One Cup  on Sunday. Fabio Borini put Sunderland ahead after 10 minutes and for the rest of the first half it seemed a major upset was possible. But Yaya Toure stroked in a brilliant 25—yarder to level nine minutes after half—time and three minutes later Samir Nasri fired in with the outside of his right foot from just inside the box.

5) New Pakistan High Commissioner arrived in India: Pakistan High Commissioner-designate Abdul Basit arrived in India on Sunday at a time of a pause in India-Pakistan relations. A career diplomat like his predecessor Salman Bashir, Mr. Basit was Pakistan’s Ambassador to Germany and nominated for this post instead of the earlier choice Syed Ibne Abbas.

6) Nishi Vasudeva takes over as Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd chief: Nishi Vasudeva on 1 March 2014 became the first woman to head a blue-chip PSU when she took over as the Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL). Vasudeva, who turns 58 this month, was Director (Marketing) in HPCL before replacing Subir Roy Choudhury as the head of the company. Choudhury retired on 28 Feb 2014 on attaining the superannuation age of 60 years.

The department of economic affairs has issued a notification under the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Rules Act 1957, permitting the EPFO to become a member of a recognised stock exchange, according to a release.

1) Former Army chief General VK Singh joins BJP: Former army chief Gen VK Singh — a controversial figure during his army tenure and after — along with nearly three dozen senior retired defence officers joined the BJP on Saturday amid promises to set up ex-servicemen welfare commission and a war memorial once the NDA government comes to power. Singh – who was locked in a row with the government over his retirement age – was the first serving army chief to drag the government to the SC.

2) Bangaru Laxman, ex-BJP president passed away in Hyderabad: Former BJP president Bangaru Laxman has died in Hyderabad's Yashoda Hospital on Saturday following a prolonged illness. He was 74. He joined politics at an early age and was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1996. He was also jailed during the Emergency in 1975. Bangaru Laxman was president of the BJP between 2000 and 2001. Before becoming the BJP president, Laxman was the Union minister of state for railways between 1999 and 2000.

3) Noted academician GK Chadha is dead:  Noted economist and academician G.K. Chadha died Saturday after a heart attack, a statement said. He was 73. The first president of the SAARC-established South Asian University, Chadha was associated with the university since its inception in 2008, said a university statement.

4) Aam Aadmi Party declared third list of Lok Sabha candidates: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday declared their third list of candidates for 20 Lok Sabha seats with prominent names being Savita Bhatti, wife of late comedian Jaspal Bhatti, who has been given a ticket from Chandigarh, and Anand Kumar, a professor from JNU, from Delhi.

7) Pranab Mukherjee approved Telangana Bill, President’s rule imposed in Andhra Pradesh: The Bill to carve out Telangana on Saturday received the assent of President Pranab Mukherjee who also signed the proclamation to impose central rule in Andhra Pradesh. The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill 2014, which got Parliament’s approval on February 20 despite strong opposition from Seemandhra leaders, got the Presidential assent, paving the way for creation of the country’s 29th state by splitting Andhra Pradesh. There will be 13 districts in residuary Andhra Pradesh while Telangana will have 10 districts, including the Hyderabad city. In a bid to address concerns of the Seemandhra region, government had already announced grant of Special Category Status including tax incentives to the residuary state as part of a six-point development package for AP’s two successor states.

Why Presidents rule?- The decision to impose the President’s Rule in Andhra Pradesh was necessitated by N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s resignation as the Chief Minister on February 19 as he was opposed to division of the state to carve out Telangana.

8) Afghanistan script history, beat Bangladesh by 32 runs in Asia Cup:  Afghanistan notched up their first major win against a Test playing nation as they produced an all-round performance to script an upset 32-run victory over Bangladesh in their Asia Cup match on Saturday. Chasing 255 for victory, Bangladesh could not recover from a top-order collapse and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals to be bundled out for 222 in 47.5 overs at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium to slump to their second consecutive loss in the five-nation regional tournament.
