Know about International Women's Day

International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women's Day, is marked on March 8 every year.  In the year 1914, International Women's Day was celebrated on March 8 for the first time. The dates continued to fluctuate till the mid-40's. The UN theme this year is "Equality for Women is Progress for All".

>> International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

>> This year’s theme, “Equality for women is progress for all”  emphasizes how gender equality, empowerment of women, women’s full enjoyment of human rights and the eradication of poverty are essential to economic and social development. It also stresses the vital role of women as agents of development.

Message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the eve of International Women's Day

"Countries with more gender equality have better economic growth. Companies with more women leaders perform better. Peace agreements that include women are more durable. Parliaments with more women enact more legislation on key social issues such as health, education, anti-discrimination and child support. The evidence is clear: equality for women means progress for all."

President of India’s message on the occasion of International Women’s Day

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee in his message on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which is observed every year on March 8, has said: -

“On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, I extend warm greetings and good wishes to women in all parts of our country. I thank them for their invaluable contribution in the making of our great nation.

Women in India have attained greatness through the ages – in political, academic and spiritual spheres. They enjoyed freedom and equal participation in public life in ancient India. In the Rig Veda, women are placed at the highest pedestal – ‘Yatr nariyastu poojayante ramante tatr devah’ or where women are worshipped, Gods preside there. The Taittriya Upanishad teaches us ‘Matridevo bhava’ or ‘Let your mother be God to you’.

Swami Vivekananda rightly said, “All nations have attained greatness by paying proper respect to women. That country and that nation which does not respect women has never become great”.

The principle of gender equality is also enshrined in the Indian Constitution. Not only does the Constitution grant equality to women, but also empowers the State to adopt measures of positive discrimination in favour of women. Empowerment of women must be regarded as not only an element of our efforts towards gender equality but also a critical step for stimulating their full participation in nation building.

We as a society must work towards changing negative perceptions about women. Women should be provided a safe, secure and congenial environment in which their talents can flower and they can contribute their full share in the building of our nation.

On this International Women’s Day, let us resolve to redouble our efforts for the protection and welfare of women. May the celebrations inculcate in every member of our society the highest respect for women.”

Women's Day 2014 doodle featured by Google for second-straight day

>> Women's Day 2014 doodle can be seen on Google's home page across the world. Interestingly, the video-based doodle first made an appearance on the eve of International Women's Day on Friday, and not too surprisingly, it continues to be showcased on the day that celebrates women's achievements in various spheres of life.

>> In the doodle, the Google logo features a play button in the second 'O' of the logo, which also depicts the Venus symbol for women - a small circle, with a cross below it. The Google logo in turn is surrounded by more Venus symbols. Hitting the play button causes a YouTube video to open up. The video has women from all walks of life wishing people Happy International Women's Day. Amongst other famous female personalities, the video features Malala Yousafzai and Asha Bhonsle.

SSC FCI Final Result Published

 Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has announced the final results of Assistant Grade III (General, Depot, Technical and Account Cadres) recruitment in FCI for the year 2013. The exam was held on 10th and 11th of November 2012 across India. The results were declared on 20.12.13 and next round written exam was held on 07.04.13 and the results were declared during September 2013. Due to stoppages, it covers 9 km less.

Time taken to cover 9 km =(9/54x 60) min = 10 min.

Explanation:

Average of 20 numbers = 0.

1) Election Commission announced nine-phase parliamentary election schedule: By announcing on Wednesday the dates for Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission has heralded an unduly long and blistering summer election. Over 814 million voters — constituting the biggest electorate in the world — will exercise their franchise to elect 543 members to the 16 th Lok Sabha in nine phases (April 7 to May 12), the first time since India became a republic in 1950. Assembly elections will also be held simultaneously in the states of Andhra Pradesh, including the Telangana region, Orissa and Sikkim. 2) Dial '1063' to register telecom complaints: Telecom subscribers across the country can now register complaints by dialling a special toll free number '1063'.

A note circulated by DoT said a short code '1063' has been activated by the Public Grievances Cell in the Department of Telecom (DoT) headquarters in New Delhi as a telecom consumer grievances helpline. The new number will bring subscriber grievances into the notice of DoT.

3) After Penguin, another publisher recalls Wendy Doniger's book: Within weeks of Penguin controversially recalling Wendy Doniger's book, 'The Hindus: An Alternative History', another publisher, Aleph, pulled out the American author's previous work, 'On Hinduism', on Tuesday. Bookshops across Bangalore received calls from representatives of Aleph Book Company, promoted by Rupa Publications, seeking return of all copies of the book.

4) Assam becomes first Indian state to observe Child Protection Day: Assam became the first state in the country to observe Child Protection Day on Tuesday with about 1400 children participating in the central function in Guwahati. The day was observed across the state and a central function was organised under the aegis of Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) in collaboration with the UNICEF. November 20 is observed globally as Universal Children’s Day every year.

5) US First Lady Honours Indian Acid Attack Victim Laxmi: US First Lady Michelle Obama has felicitated Indian acid attack victim Laxmi after she won the International Women of Courage Award for successfully leading the campaign against acid attacks on women in India. Instead of hiding her disfigured face "she became the standard-bearer in India for the movement to end acid attacks," Higginbottom said, adding she had managed to win over the Supreme Court to regulate the sales of acid.

6) R Neelakantan returns to SpiceJet as chief financial officer:  Second largest low-cost carrier SpiceJet Ltd on Wednesday appointed R Neelakantan as its chief financial officer, marking his second coming to the Chennai-based airline, and also appointed four senior vice presidents. Neelakantan, who had served as CFO from November 2010 to February 2013, is returning to the role after serving as the internal audit head at the parent Sun Group.

7) Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO, to retire at end of September: Apple on Tuesday announced that Peter Oppenheimer, the company's senior vice president and CFO, will retire at the end of September. Luca Maestri, Apple's vice president of finance and corporate controller, will succeed Oppenheimer as CFO. He will report to Tim Cook.

8) Third BIMSTEC summit 2014 held in Myanmar: Third BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit was held from 1 March to 4 March 2014 in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. The Third BIMSTEC summit was attended by the heads from six countries and Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Thailand, namely Prime Minister of India, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Prime Minister of Nepal, President of Sri Lanka, Prime Minister of Bhutan and President of Myanmar.
