Daily Current Affairs: 18 March 2014

1) Russia suspended from G8:  France's foreign minister on Tuesday said that leaders of the Group of Eight world powers have suspended Russia's participation in the club amid tensions over Ukraine and Russia's incursion into Crimea. The other seven members of the group had already suspended preparations for a G8 summit that Russia is scheduled to host in June in Sochi.

2) Lokpal appointment put on hold: The UPA government has put on hold its move to appoint the first Lokpal, following allegations of a flawed selection procedure. Highly placed government sources said that the rules framed under the Lokpal Act would be amended appropriately to ensure that the selection was fair and there was no criticism from any quarter.

3) Western Ghats draft notification spares 3,000 sq km in Kerala: The Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) Tuesday issued a draft notification earmarking 56,825 sq km of the Western Ghats as Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA), keeping it out of bounds for mining, quarrying and major construction and thermal projects. Giving in to demands from Kerala it, however, left out over 3,000 sq km from ESA demarcated by the Kasturirangan-led High Level Working Group.

4) Thailand to end state of emergency in Bangkok: Thailand will lift a nearly two-month-old state of emergency in Bangkok and surrounding areas following an easing of political protests in the capital, a senior official said on Tuesday. The emergency decree will be replaced by another special law, the Internal Security Act, with effect from Wednesday until April 30, the prime minister's secretary-general, Suranand Vejjajiva said.


5) Motorola to launch Moto X Wednesday on Flipkart: The Moto X will start at Rs 23999 and is releasing on Wednesday, launching partner Flipkart tweeted on Tuesday. Another tweet said the wood back version will be priced at Rs 25,999. The black and white versions of the MotoX will be in stock on Wednesday. The rest of the variants will be on pre-order, Flipkart tweeted. The Moto X is a long waited smartphone in India. 6) India and China agreed to co-operate on IT: India and China, on Tuesday, signed a memorandum of understanding on IT cooperation, which, officials said, was a ‘formal recognition’ from the Chinese government to promote Indian software companies, which have largely struggled to obtain contracts from Chinese state-run companies. Both countries held their third Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) here on Tuesday.


7) Kevin Pietersen to lead Delhi Daredevils in Indian Premier League 2014: Delhi Daredevils appointed swashbuckling England batsman Kevin Pietersen as their captain for the upcoming IPL with wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik as his deputy. “Kevin Pietersen will captain the all new look Delhi Daredevils during the seventh edition of the Pepsi Indian Premier League. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik would be the vice-captain,” the Daredevils said in a statement. The 33-year-old former England skipper was expected to take over as captain given his formidable reputation as a T20s batsman.

1) Crimea breaks away from Ukraine: Crimea’s Parliament on Monday declared the region an independent state, after its residents voted overwhelmingly to break off from Ukraine and seek to join Russia. Crimea declared independence from Ukraine and applied to rejoin Russia, hours after its residents overwhelmingly supported the historic passage in a referendum on Sunday. Nearly 97 per cent of voters said “yes” to revert to Russia, from which Crimea had been separated when the Soviet Union broke up just over 20 years ago. A mere 2.5 per cent voted in favour of staying with Ukraine.


2) Mahela Jayawardene to retire from Twenty20 cricket after World Cup: Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene said he will retire from international Twenty20 cricket after this month's World Cup in Bangladesh, days after a similar announcement from long-time team-mate Kumar Sangakkara. In comments posted on the International Cricket Council website, the 36-year-old said he had taken the decision as he knew this tournament would be his last World Cup and he did not want to block a younger player.

3) IPL 2014: Bailey to captain Kings XI Punjab: George Bailey, Australia's T20 captain, will lead Kings XI Punjab in the IPL this season. Bailey will be the second Australian to lead Kings XI after Adam Gilchrist, who lead the franchise in the last two seasons before retiring last year. Bailey was one of the four Australians purchased by the franchise at the player’s auction on February, along with Mitchell Johnson, Glenn Maxwell and Shaun Marsh.

4) Djokovic beats Federer to win Indian Wells ATP Masters: World number two Novak Djokovic of Serbia outclassed Roger Federer by tiebreaker to win the Indian Wells ATP Masters title for the third time. The Serb beat Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) Sunday to add another title to those he captured in the California desert in 2008 and 2011.

5) NMPT gets new chief: PC Parida assumed charge as Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) on March 15. Prior to this, he was Deputy Chairman of Chennai Port Trust since January 2011. He also worked as Deputy Chairman of Mormugao Port Trust from November 2008 to December 2010.

6) India is the world’s largest arms importer: SIPRI- A new data on international arms transfers released that India’s import of weapon systems is three times more than Pakistan and China. The report published by as Swedish Think Tank, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has claimed that India continues to be the largest buyer of arms in the world.

7) Director Gyan Correa bags Gollapudi Srinivas National Award 2013: Gyan Correa, the debutant director of Gujarati movie 'The Good Road', has been selected for the Gollapudi Srinivas National Award 2013. The film was selected from 20 nominations across many languages including Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali, Telugu and Kannada, a press release from the Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Foundation said. The award has been instituted in memory of late Gollapudi Srinivasa, who died while directing his first film Prema Pustakam (Book of Love) in 1992.


8) India nominated Rani-ki-Vav and GHNP for UNESCO’s World Heritage Site Status: India nominated Rani-ki-Vav located in Patan, Gujarat and the Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) in Himachal Pradesh for UNESCO’s World Heritage Site Status for 2014. The World Heritage Committee will convene in Doha, Qatar, in June 2014 to review the nomination and take a final decision.

1) Nico Rosberg won Australian Grand Prix: Nico Rosberg opened Formula One's new era with a dominant victory at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, as world champion Sebastian Vettel and pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton were early casualties. Rosberg, whose Mercedes team have come out strongest with the sport's new hybrid technology, led from start to finish and took the chequered flag 24.5 seconds ahead of Australia's Daniel Ricciardo in his Red Bull debut. McLaren's Kevin Magnussen, 21, drove to a brilliant third place in his Formula One debut. He became the first Danish driver ever to reach the podium.

2) Sebastian Vettel's winning streak ends in Australian grand prix: Sebastian Vettel's record run of nine consecutive race victories ended on Sunday when the quadruple world champion retired his Red Bull from the season-opening Australian Grand Prix with a reliability problem. The German complained of a lack of boost pressure during his pre-race installation lap and was noticeably lacking in power when taking off from 12th place on the grid.

3) Karnataka complete hattrick, won Vijay Hazare Trophy: Karnataka completed a historic treble at domestic level by emerging champions in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with a four-wicket win over Railways in yet another low-scoring affair at Eden Gardens on Sunday. Chasing 158, the Ranji and Irani Trophy champions had a jittery start after they lost five wickets in 26 runs to be 47/5 in the 12th over but sensible batting by youngsters Karun Nair (53 not out) and Lokesh Rahul (38) set up the chase with a 66-run partnership.

4) Kumar Sangakkara to quit T20 format after World T20: Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara will retire from Twenty20 internationals after the ongoing World T20 in Bangladesh, the veteran left-hander told a newspaper on Sunday. The 36-year-old said he wanted to make way for younger players in the national team, but made himself available to play the shortest format in franchise-based competitions. "Definitely, without a doubt, this is my last World T20," Sangakkara told the Colombo-based Sunday Island newspaper. "I won't be playing any T20 internationals after this.

5) Bank unions seek five-day workweek: Apart from seeking early settlement of wage revision, the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has renewed its appeal for introduction of five-day workweek and regulated working hours for officers. The issue was discussed in detail at a recent meeting with the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) in Mumbai. On its part, the UFBU said working hours could be increased by 45 minutes a day as most of the branches function for four hours on the weekend.

6) Election Commission asks political parties not to campaign on Holi:  The Election Commission has issued an advisory for all political parties asking them to refrain from campaigning on Holi, the festival of colours, in the backdrop of the upcoming polls. “There is a restriction on political parties on using festivals and religious occasions for their political support and means of campaigning. Do not campaign on Holi,” said Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath on Sunday. 


7) World Cup T20 2014 started: World Cup T20 2014 started at Bangladesh on Sunday. Host Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by nine wickets in the opener.
