Daily Current Affairs Updates: 19 March 2014

1) High Courts to get 25 per cent more judges to clear backlog: In an attempt to clear the backlog of over 40 lakh cases, the Centre has increased the strength of judges in all High Courts by 25 per cent. As a result, the number of judges will go up from 906 to 1,112. At present, there are about 250 vacancies in the High Courts. In addition, 206 new vacancies have to be filled in view of the proposed increase in the strength.

2) EC to track election ads on Twitter, Facebook: With political parties using social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook in a big way for campaigning in Lok Sabha elections, Election Commission (EC) has issued detailed guidelines for political advertisements on such platforms that include obtaining certification for contents before putting them in public domain. The EC has also asked the social media sites to maintain expenditure incurred by the political parties and individual candidates on advertisements so that they can be produced to the commission when requested for.

3) UAE to host 20 matches in IPL 7 first leg:  The United Arab Emirates was on Wednesday awarded the hosting rights of 20 matches in the IPL's first leg with defending champions Mumbai Indians opening the tournament by squaring off against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 16 in Abu Dhabi. The IPL Governing Council announced the schedule for the first phase of the tournament after a meeting. UAE leg of the IPL, a part of which has been shifted out of the country due to general elections, will wind up on April 30 with Mumbai facing Sunrisers Hyderabad in Dubai.


4) Nissan rolls out Datsun GO at Rs. 3.12 lakh: Japanese auto maker Nissan, on Wednesday, launched the Datsun brand in India with the first offering 'GO' priced between Rs.3.12 lakh and Rs.3.69 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The car is likely to intensify competition in the popular small car category and will compete with cars such as Maruti Suzuki's Alto 800 and Hyundai's Eon.

5) Bank, ATM services may be hit as Windows XP support ends on April 8:  Banking operations, including ATM services, may be hit as support from Microsoft for Windows XP operating system will end from April 8, the RBI said on Wednesday asking banks to take immediate steps to control this. The end of support for Windows XP is likely to increase the probability of attacks on such a system and may affect ATM operations as well, RBI said.Read more daily updates from here

6) Pakistan's first LNG terminal to be ready by November: Pakistan first ever LNG Terminal to be ready for operation soon at Karachi by November. Pakistan is going through severe energy crisis and LNG is seen as short term solution to meet its energy needs.

7) Government allows more banks to import gold in easing of curbs: Government has allowed five domestic private sector banks to import gold, in what industry officials say could be a significant step towards easing of tough curbs on the metal imposed last year to cut the country's trade deficit. The move could boost gold supplies and bring down premiums for the metal in the world's second-biggest consumer after China.


8) World Twenty20 warm-up: Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina set up India's 20-run win over England: India comprehensively defeated England by 20 runs in their second and final warm-up fixture of the ICC World Twenty20 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday. Chasing India's total of 178/4, England could only manage 158/6 in their quota of 20 overs.

1) Russia suspended from G8:  France's foreign minister on Tuesday said that leaders of the Group of Eight world powers have suspended Russia's participation in the club amid tensions over Ukraine and Russia's incursion into Crimea. The other seven members of the group had already suspended preparations for a G8 summit that Russia is scheduled to host in June in Sochi.

2) Lokpal appointment put on hold: The UPA government has put on hold its move to appoint the first Lokpal, following allegations of a flawed selection procedure. Highly placed government sources said that the rules framed under the Lokpal Act would be amended appropriately to ensure that the selection was fair and there was no criticism from any quarter.

3) Western Ghats draft notification spares 3,000 sq km in Kerala: The Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) Tuesday issued a draft notification earmarking 56,825 sq km of the Western Ghats as Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA), keeping it out of bounds for mining, quarrying and major construction and thermal projects. Giving in to demands from Kerala it, however, left out over 3,000 sq km from ESA demarcated by the Kasturirangan-led High Level Working Group.

4) Thailand to end state of emergency in Bangkok: Thailand will lift a nearly two-month-old state of emergency in Bangkok and surrounding areas following an easing of political protests in the capital, a senior official said on Tuesday. The emergency decree will be replaced by another special law, the Internal Security Act, with effect from Wednesday until April 30, the prime minister's secretary-general, Suranand Vejjajiva said.


5) Motorola to launch Moto X Wednesday on Flipkart: The Moto X will start at Rs 23999 and is releasing on Wednesday, launching partner Flipkart tweeted on Tuesday. Another tweet said the wood back version will be priced at Rs 25,999. The black and white versions of the MotoX will be in stock on Wednesday. The rest of the variants will be on pre-order, Flipkart tweeted. The Moto X is a long waited smartphone in India. 6) India and China agreed to co-operate on IT: India and China, on Tuesday, signed a memorandum of understanding on IT cooperation, which, officials said, was a ‘formal recognition’ from the Chinese government to promote Indian software companies, which have largely struggled to obtain contracts from Chinese state-run companies. Both countries held their third Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) here on Tuesday.


7) Kevin Pietersen to lead Delhi Daredevils in Indian Premier League 2014: Delhi Daredevils appointed swashbuckling England batsman Kevin Pietersen as their captain for the upcoming IPL with wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik as his deputy. “Kevin Pietersen will captain the all new look Delhi Daredevils during the seventh edition of the Pepsi Indian Premier League. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik would be the vice-captain,” the Daredevils said in a statement. The 33-year-old former England skipper was expected to take over as captain given his formidable reputation as a T20s batsman.

1) Crimea breaks away from Ukraine: Crimea’s Parliament on Monday declared the region an independent state, after its residents voted overwhelmingly to break off from Ukraine and seek to join Russia. Crimea declared independence from Ukraine and applied to rejoin Russia, hours after its residents overwhelmingly supported the historic passage in a referendum on Sunday. Nearly 97 per cent of voters said “yes” to revert to Russia, from which Crimea had been separated when the Soviet Union broke up just over 20 years ago. A mere 2.5 per cent voted in favour of staying with Ukraine.


2) Mahela Jayawardene to retire from Twenty20 cricket after World Cup: Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene said he will retire from international Twenty20 cricket after this month's World Cup in Bangladesh, days after a similar announcement from long-time team-mate Kumar Sangakkara. In comments posted on the International Cricket Council website, the 36-year-old said he had taken the decision as he knew this tournament would be his last World Cup and he did not want to block a younger player.

3) IPL 2014: Bailey to captain Kings XI Punjab: George Bailey, Australia's T20 captain, will lead Kings XI Punjab in the IPL this season. Bailey will be the second Australian to lead Kings XI after Adam Gilchrist, who lead the franchise in the last two seasons before retiring last year. Bailey was one of the four Australians purchased by the franchise at the player’s auction on February, along with Mitchell Johnson, Glenn Maxwell and Shaun Marsh.

4) Djokovic beats Federer to win Indian Wells ATP Masters: World number two Novak Djokovic of Serbia outclassed Roger Federer by tiebreaker to win the Indian Wells ATP Masters title for the third time. The film was selected from 20 nominations across many languages including Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali, Telugu and Kannada, a press release from the Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Foundation said. The award has been instituted in memory of late Gollapudi Srinivasa, who died while directing his first film Prema Pustakam (Book of Love) in 1992.
