Mathematics Model Questions for PA/SA Exams on Interest

Before solving the problem Know Interest Formula

When a sum of money is borrowed for a period, an extra amount has to be paid along with the borrowed money. The fixed rate of the extra amount is called interest. The interest are of two types: simple interest and compound interest.

Simple interest is the interest paid at the end of the period. Compound interest is the total interest that includes the original interest and the interest of the new principal which is obtained by adding the original principal to the due interest.

The Interest formula is given as,

1) ISRO successfully launched navigation satellite IRNSS-1B: Indian Space Research Organization on Friday successfully launched IRNSS-1B, the second navigation satellite among the seven satellites that will eventually constitute the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). PSLV-C24 carrying IRNSS-1B blasted off from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh at 5.14 pm. Nineteen minutes after liftoff, PSLV-C24 injected the IRNSS-1B into a preliminary orbit. It was the 25th success in a row for the PSLV, after it majestically lifted off from the first launch pad at Sriharikota at 5.14 p.m. After 19 minutes of flight, IRNSS-1B was put into a perfect orbit. K. Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), said two more IRNSS satellites would be put into orbit before 2014-end and three more before mid-2015.


2) World T20: Kohli, Ashwin star as India hammer South Africa to enter final: Virat Kohli showed why he is counted among the best contemporary batsmen as he slammed an unbeaten 72 to guide India to a six-wicket win over South Africa in the World Twenty20 semifinals on Friday. Kohli smashed five fours and two sixes during his 44-ball knock as India scored 176-4 in 19.1 overs in reply to South Africa's 172-4 to set up the title clash with sub-continental rival Sri Lanka.

3) Tagore honoured in House of Commons: India, Bangladesh and the United Kingdom joined hands on Thursday to honour Rabindranath Tagore, one of the greatest poets of the Commonwealth, at the House of Commons. Speaking at a landmark event in a packed committee room of the Palace of Westminster — as the Houses of Parliament in Britain are referred to — India’s High Commissioner to the U.K., Ranjan Mathai, said: “Tagore was one of the most celebrated sons of India, a towering figure, who wrote our national anthem.

4) Goa demolishes Karnataka, clinches South Zone Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Goa won the Syed Mushtaq Ali South Zone T20 tournament for the first time when it demolished last year’s winner Karnataka by 108 runs for its fourth win in the league.

5) Kandla port handles the most iron ores among all ports in the country for the 2013-14 period: The port retains its numero uno position by tackling 87.01 million tonnes. Its followed in the list by ports of Paradip (68 million), JNPT (62.35 million) and Mumbai (59.19 million) as per the report of Indian Ports Association.   

6) Doha Bank to open 1st branch next month: The second largest Qatari lender Doha Bank will be opening its first branch in India in Mumbai next month and has set a target of $5-billion balance-sheet by the third year of operations. 7) SBI launched twitter handle: After launching accounts on Facebook and Youtube, the country’s largest lender SBI on Friday took one more step on the social media front by launching a twitter handle. Mid-sized private sector lender Kotak Mahindra Bank had last month launched twitter-linked current accounts. The Twitter handle for SBI is “https://twitter.com/TheOfficialSBI”.

8) Malta gets new female president: Malta has sworn in the country's youngest-ever president whose aim is to give a voice to the disadvantaged. The 55-year-old Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca previously served as social policy minister. She takes over from George Abela, who was appointed in 2009. Breaking from tradition, the Mass that preceded Coleiro Preca's swearing-in ceremony Friday was held in a home for disabled people, a symbolic gesture by a president whose declared aim is to help the needy. Maltan presidents are just figureheads with no executive powers. They serve for five years and can't be re-appointed.

9) International Mine Awareness Day observed on April 4: In 2005, the United Nations declared that on April 4 each year, member states would observe International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. For 2014, the UN chose to highlight the role of women in mine action.

10) Government appoints R Gandhi as deputy governor of RBI for 3 years: R. Gandhi, an executive director at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been named as deputy governor, succeeding Anand Sinha, whose term ended in January. Gandhi has been appointed for a period of three years, the central bank said in a statement on Thursday. Gandhi’s name was approved by the appointments committee of the cabinet led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.


11) EU launches Sentinel-1a satellite as part of the Copernicus project:  European Union has launched the first satellite of its multibillion-euro Copernicus Earth observation project that will supply valuable images in the event of natural disasters or even a plane crash.

1) HAL received the Most Efficient Navratna Award 2013: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) on 3 April 2014 recieved the Most Efficient Navratna  Award for the year 2013. It received the award at the 5th Dalal Street Investment Journal Awards ceremony held in New Delhi. The award was collected by the Chairman of HAL, Dr. R K Tyagi. The awards were presented to the various PSUs in different categories in recognition of their performance and contribution to the Indian economy. At present there are 14 Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) which have been designated as Navratnas by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) under the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.

2) D K Pathak appointed as the new Director General of BSF: Union Government on 2 April 2014 appointed senior IPS officer D K Pathak as the new Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF). BSF is country's largest border guarding force. His name for the post of DG was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Mamohan Singh. He is expected to continue till February, 2016.

3) New Zealand tops social progress index, India at 102nd position: New Zealand came first in a global index published on Thursday that ranks countries by social and environmental performance rather than economic output in a drive to make social progress a priority for politicians and businesses. The (SPI) rates 132 countries on more than 50 indicators, including health, sanitation, shelter, personal safety, access to information, sustainability, tolerance and inclusion and access to education. The low rankings of China (90th) and India (102nd) showed that their rapid economic growth is not yet being converted into better lives for their citizens, said Green,  executive director of the Social Progress Imperative, a non-profit organisation that publishes the index. 4) Unbeaten run in ICC World Twenty20 takes India to top of ICC rankings: Riding on their superb unbeaten run in the World Twenty20 World Cup so far, the Indian cricket team toppled Sri Lanka to clinch the top spot in the ICC rankings issued on Wednesday. “India has moved ahead of Sri Lanka into the number-one position on the Reliance ICC T20I Team Rankings Table,” the ICC said in a statement.

5) Tata-Singapore Airlines venture gets Aviation Ministry nod: Union Ministry of Civil Aviation on 2 April 2014 approved the Tata and Singapore Airlines (SIA) joint venture. The Aviation Ministry also issued no-objection certificate (NOC) to the new airline JV called Tata SIA Airlines Ltd. The approval given to the Tata SIA Airlines Ltd came in a record time. The joint venture got the approval within a time period of little more than four months. Tata and SIA first got the clearance from Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) in November 2013.

6) Aamir Khan becomes EC's national icon for Lok Sabha Election 2014: Election Commission (EC) confirmed Amir Khan as its national icon for the Lok Sabha elections 2014 on 1 April 2014. He IS the fifth national icon selected by the EC.  The EC recorded a video and audio campaign which shows Amir Khan urging people to vote ethically. Amir Khan is the fifth National icon selected by EC to campaign for creating awareness among voters about elections. The other four national icons were President A P J Abdul Kalam, cricketer M S Dhoni, badminton star Saina Nehwal and boxer Mary Kom.


7) Sri Lanka beat West Indies to reach World T20 final: A dominant Sri Lanka on Thursday made it to the ICC World T20 final for the third time knocking out defending champions West Indies by 27 runs via the Duckworth Lewis method after thundershowers stopped proceedings in the 14th over of the second innings. Batting first in the first semi-final, Sri Lanka scored an impressive 160 for 6 riding on important contributions from Angelo Mathews (40) and Lahiru Thirimanne (45). In reply, West Indies were 80 for four in 13.5 overs when a storm followed by heavy downpour ruled out any chances of a game.

1) World Autism Awareness Day observed: The World Autism Awareness Day was observed on 2 April. The day was unanimously declared as World Autism Awareness Day by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008 to highlight the need to improve the lives of children and adults who suffer from autism. Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that manifests itself during the first three years of life and results from a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain. The disorder mostly affects children and is prevalent across countries, genders, races and socio-economic backgrounds.

2) New bank licence: RBI grants 'in-principle' approval to IDFC, Bandhan:  Reserve Bank of India( RBI) on Wednesday granted "in-principle" approvals to Mumbai-based infrastructure lender IDFC and Kolkata- based micro-finance Bandhan Financial Services for new bank licences. The RBI will also consider the application of India Post, but the central bank said it would done separately in consultation with the government. This would be the first time in a decade that new banking licences are handed out, since the formation of Yes Bank in 2004. There were 25 companies in the running.

3) Dipika Pallikal inks deal with adidas: India’s number one female squash player Dipika Pallikal has entered into an association with adidas as the sports apparel major signed the world number 11 for its latest women’s campaign ‘all in for #mygirls’

4) Axis launched home loan scheme for below Rs 10K earners: Axis Bank, on the occasion of its 20th anniversary on Wednesday, announced the launch of ‘Asha Home Loan’, a 30-year home loan product for first time home buyers in the lower income segment, seeking affordable EMIs. The home loans are for customers with family incomes of Rs.8,000-10,000 a month and above. Customers can pool their family income instead of depending on their individual income only.

5) Fin Services Secretary Gurdial Singh Sandhu on RBI board: Financial Services Secretary Gurdial Singh Sandhu has been nominated as a director on the Reserve Bank’s central board on Wednesday. “The Central Government has nominated Gurdial Singh Sandhu, Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, as a director on the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India ...,” the RBI said in a notification.Visit:www.currentaffairs4examz.com

6) Vodafone, Airtel applied for Unified Licence to renew licences: Telecom major Vodafone and Airtel have applied for new telecom permits - Unified Licence - to continue their businesses in some service areas, including Delhi and Mumbai.  "As required under the conditions of auction, laid down in the Notice Inviting Application, Vodafone has applied for Unified Licence in Delhi, Mumbai & Kolkata service areas on 19 February 2014," Vodafone said in a statement.  Bharti Airtel has also applied for new licences in Delhi and Kolkata circles, sources said. The Unified Licences norms bar a telecom operator from holding any kind of stake in competitor.

7) RBI adopts new CPI as key measure of inflation: he Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, Raghuram Rajan, on Tuesday, said that the central bank had adopted the new Consumer Price Index (CPI) (combined) as the key measure of inflation.


8) Karim Massimov named as the Kazakhstan’s new PM after Serik Akhmetov resigned: Karim Massimov, the Chief of Staff of Kazakhstan on 2 April 2014 was named as the new Prime Minister of the country by the President, Nursultan Nazarbayev. His appointment came following the resignation of Serik Akhmetov from the post, which was accepted by the President as per the Constitutional provision. This announcement of acceptance of resignation of Akhmetov was made by the President through a twitter message. Akhmetov was appointed as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan in September 2012. Earlier, Massimov served as the Kazakh Prime Minister from January 2007 to September 2012 before Akhmetov.
