11th May- National Technology Day


 On 11th May, 1998 India achieved a major technological breakthrough by successfully carrying out nuclear tests at Pokhran. Also first, indigenous aircraft "Hansa-3" was test flown at Bangalore on this day and India also performed successful test firing of the Trishul missile on the same day.

Considering above technological achievements on a particular date i.e. 11th May, the day of 11th May was chosen to be commemorated as National Technology Day.


Technology Day is celebrated as a symbol of quest for scientific inquiry, technological creativity and the translation of that quest in the integration of Science, Society and Industry. This day is also celebrated to honour technological innovations and their successful commercialization which makes fruits of research reach people at large.

1) Ronnie O'Sullivan named World Snooker Player of the Year: Ronnie O'Sullivan has been named World Snooker Player of the Year at an awards ceremony in London. The 38-year-old picked up the accolade three days after his bid for a sixth World Championship title was scuppered by Mark Selby in the final at the Crucible. But O'Sullivan, who escaped serious injury following a car crash on his way home from Sheffield, was rewarded following another strong season in the major events. He won the Masters, the Welsh Open and the Champion of Champions event and also picked up the fans' player of the year award.

2) Nokia to launch dual-SIM Lumia 630: Upping its ante in the fiercely competitive Indian smartphone market, Microsoft is all set to launch its dual-SIM smartphone Lumia 630 that will take head-on likes of Moto G, HTC Desire and Samsung’s Duos. Two weeks into acquiring Nokia’s handset division, software giant Microsoft is aggressively targetting the dual SIM market in India, which it believes is “critically important”. Powered by Windows Phone 8.1, the Lumia 630 features a 4.5-inch display, 5-megapixel auto focus camera & 8GB of expandable internal storage.

3) Luis Guillermo Solis sworn in as 47th President of Costa Rica: Historian and political scientist Luis Guillermo Solis has been sworn in as 47th President of Costa Rica.  He beats Johnny Araya in run-off election with astounding 78 percent approval. Costa Rica is a tiny Central American country with population of just 4.5 million. He succeeds Laura Chinchilla as such.

4) Sensex, Nifty end at record highs on capital inflows: The benchmark sensex on 9th May crossed record 23,000 level for the first time but closed a tad lower at 22,994.23, posting its biggest single-day gain of 650.19 points since September 2013, on strong FII buying in banking, auto and power stocks ahead of election results next week.

5) BHEL commissioned Gas Turbine Generating Unit in Oman: The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, BHEL has commissioned Gas Turbine Generating unit at a power project in Oman. The 126 MW Gas Turbine Generator at Qarn Alam-3 power project of Petroleum Development Oman is the second successive project of BHEL in Oman.

6) Dinesh Ramdin named West Indies Test captain: Denesh Ramdin was on Friday appointed captain of the West Indies Test side in place of Darren Sammy and the wicketkeeper-batsman`s first assignment will be the home series against New Zealand beginning next month. Sammy will continue to be T20 captain meaning West Indies have separate skippers for all three formats.

7) Fire onboard INS Ganga, 3 injured: Three persons, including a Navy personnel, on Friday received burn injuries after a fire broke out onboard INS Ganga, which was going through routine maintenance and refit at the naval dockyard in Mumbai. According to naval sources, the incident occurred around 11:50 a.m. when welding work was going on onboard the naval ship.


8) Former AP Chief Minister Janardhana Reddy passed away: Former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Nedurumilli Janardhan Reddy passed away in the early hours on Friday after brief illness. He was 80 and is survived by wife and four sons.

1) President of India dedicated ‘RUPAY’, India’s own card payment network, to the nation: President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday dedicated to the nation indigenous card payment network called RuPay taking on the global players like Visa and MasterCard. The new payment network developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), a not-for-profit company envisioned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and created by the banking industry, covers all the automated teller machines (ATMs) and most of the retail and e-commerce platforms. RuPay is the coinage of two terms Rupee and Payment. “Dedication of RuPay to the nation is symbolic of the maturity of the payment system development in India,” Mukherjee said after formally launching the card at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan. RuPay cards are accepted at all ATMs, more than 90 per cent of ‘Point of Sale’ (POS) terminals and more than 10,000 e-commerce merchants across the country.

2) India home to 54 of world's largest, most powerful public companies: Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries leads the pack of 54 Indian companies in Forbes' annual list of the world's 2000 largest and most powerful public companies, with Chinese companies occupying the top three slots on the list. The Forbes 'Global 2000' is a comprehensive list of the world's largest, most powerful public companies, as measured by revenues, profits, assets and market value. China is home to the world's top three biggest public companies and five of the top 10.


3) Sony Xperia Z2 Launched In India For Rs 49,990: Sony has launched its much talked-about smartphone Xperia Z2 in India for Rs. 49,990. Sony Xperia Z2 is a dust-proof and water-proof smartphone just like the Sony Xperia Z1. It is 8.2mm thick with a 5.2-inch full HD screen, it retains the two-tone black with aluminum trim design of its predecessor. Under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.3GHz quad-core processor, backed by 3GB of RAM. It's with the camera, however, where the Z2 gets really interesting. It's equipped with a 20.7MP still camera on the rear, capable of shooting 4K videos. Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Tourism Devender Singh received the award from Mark Walsh, Portfolio Director, Reed Travel Exhibitions, at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), a four day event.

6) Delhi most polluted city in the world: WHO- Delhi is the most polluted city in the world, says a study released by World Health Organisation (WHO) on WednesdayThe 2014 report of the Ambient Air Pollution (AAP) database contains results of outdoor air pollution monitoring from almost 1600 cities in 91 countries. The national capital has the highest concentration of PM2.5 — particulate matters less than 2.5 microns– form of air pollution, which is considered most serious and can cause respiratory diseases and other health problems.
