1) Modi govt's budget session begins: The first big Parliament session for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government started on a heated note on 7 July 2014 after the Opposition created a ruckus over price rise and railway fare hike forcing the adjournment of Lok Sabha briefly till noon and again till 2pm. The opposition parties have a number of issues to target the government with including the recent controversy after it rejected the name of former solicitor general Gopal Subramanium for appointment as a judge of the apex court, and the rape case controversy surrounding Union minister Nihalchand. While presentation of the Railway Budget is scheduled for July 8, the economic survey will be released the next day and Union Budget 2014-2015 will be presented on July 10. The session ends on August 14.

2) New poverty line: Rs 32 in villages, Rs 47 in cities: Those spending over Rs 32 a day in rural areas and Rs 47 in towns and cities should not be considered poor, an expert panel headed by former RBI governor C Rangarajan said in a report submitted to the BJP government last week. The recommendation, which comes just ahead of the budget session of Parliament, is expected to generate fresh debate over the poverty measure as the committee's report has only raised the bar marginally. Based on the Suresh Tendulkar panel's recommendations in 2011-12, the poverty line had been fixed at Rs 27 in rural areas and Rs 33 in urban areas, levels at which getting two meals may be difficult.

3) SC refused to stay Dalbir Singh’s appointment as army chief: The Supreme Court on 7 July 2014 declined to issue a stay order against the appointment of Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh as the next army chief. “There is no reason to stay the appointment. Your petition before us is to vindicate your post,” a bench of justice TS Thakur told advocate RK Anand, appearing for petitioner Lt Gen Ravi Dastane who challenged the promotion of Dalbir Singh to army commander from core commander. Dalbir Singh would take over as the army chief on August 1.

4)  Former Real Madrid star Alfredo Di Stefano passed away:  Alfredo Di Stefano, who died Monday at the age of 88, was one of the greatest footballers ever to grace the earth, held in the same esteemed regard as Pele, Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff, and will forever be known as the "Blonde Arrow" of the all-conquering Real Madrid sides of the 1950s and 1960s. Di Stefano died in Madrid's Gregorio Maranon hospital where he had lain in a coma after suffering a heart attack.

5) Bangladesh All-Rounder Shakib Al Hasan Suspended for Six Months: Bangladesh cricket authorities on Monday, suspended star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for six months due to a "severe attitude problem", the cricket board chief said. "He has a severe attitude problem, which is unprecedented in the history of Bangladesh cricket. We think that his behaviour is such that it's directly impacting the team," Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan told reporters. The suspension came as Shakib reportedly threatened to quit international cricket after he was called back to Dhaka before a planned appearance in the Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 tournament.

6) TRAI doubled minimum broadband speed: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has notified that the minimum broadband speed has been raised to 512 kilo bytes per second (kbps) from the earlier 256 kbps. The amendment has been made to the Telecom Consumers Complaint Redressal Regulations, 2012, and the regulations will be called the Telecom Consumers Complaint Redressal (Third Amendment) Regulations, 2014, TRAI said in the notification. Accordingly, the new definition of broadband is “a data connection that is able to support interactive services including internet access and has the capability of minimum download speed of 512 kbps to an individual subscriber from the point of presence (POP) of the service provider intending to provide broadband service“.

7) Three new Supreme Court Judges sworn in: The Chief Justices of the Calcutta and Orissa High Courts, Arun Kumar Mishra and Adarsh Kumar Goel, and senior lawyer Rohinton Nariman were on Monday sworn in as Supreme Court judges. They were administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of India R.M. Lodha at a brief ceremony, held in the court hall of the CJI, attended by all the judges, law officers and family members of the new judges. The strength of judges in the apex court has now gone up to 27, against the sanctioned strength of 31. 
8) Sania Mirza enters Top-5 in doubles for first time in her Career: Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza achieved a career-best rank of number five in the world as the new WTA doubles chart for women's doubles released on Monday. Sania, who turned a pro in 2003 and overcame a career-threatening wrist injury in between, has  entered the top-five for the first time in her career. Sania and her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black could not go deep in the just concluded Wimbledon championships, but a second round appearance fetched her crucial 130 ranking points, enough to push her in the top-5.

1) Novak Djokovic beats Roger Federer to win Wimbledon title: Novak Djokovic has won the Wimbledon 2014 men's singles title after beating Roger Federer in an epic five-set final battle. The Serbian defeated seven-time champion Federer 6-7 (7/9) 6-4 7-6 (7/4) 5-7 6-4, withstanding a courageous fightback in one of the most remarkable Wimbledon finals of all time.  Defeat for 32-year-old Federer, who won the most recent of his 17 Grand Slam titles at the All England Club in 2012, ended his bid to become the oldest Wimbledon champion in the Open Era and of breaking the tie of seven titles he shares with Pete Sampras.

2) Gujarat governor Kamla Beniwal transferred to Mizoram: Gujarat governor Kamla Beniwal, who had frosty relations with Narendra Modi when he was chief minister of the state, was sent off to Mizoram on Sunday evening in a reshuffle of governors effected by the government. 87-year-old Beniwal, whose tenure ends in November and who had a running battle with the Modi government over the appointment of Lokayukta and some legislations, will take over from Vakkom Purushothaman. Purushothaman is transferred and appointed as governor of Nagaland for the remainder of his term, it said adding that he would also hold additional charge of the office of governor of Tripura. Alva, the governor of Rajasthan would discharge the functions of governor of Gujarat, in addition to her own duties, until regular arrangements for the office of the governor of Gujarat are made.

3)  46 nurses return to Kochi from Iraq: Bringing huge relief to their families, all the 46 nurses briefly held hostage by ISIS militants in war-ravaged Iraq landed in Kochi at 11.57am on 5 July 2014. The nurses were received by Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy and other ministers. Hundreds of people had thronged the arrival lounge of the international airport in Kochi from early morning to express their solidarity with the nurses who had been working in a 600-bed hospital in Iraq's Tikrit.

4) Lewis Hamilton wins British Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton delighted a 120,000 crowd of enthusiastic home fans when he revived his world championship bid on 6 July 2014 with an emphatic victory in a dramatic incident-filled British Grand Prix.
 The 29-year-old Briton took full advantage of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg's first non-finish of the season, due to gearbox problems, to reduce the German's lead in the title race to just four points. Driving with great elan and speed, the 2008 champion Hamilton came home 30 seconds clear of second-placed Finn Valtteri Bottas of Williams, who started from 14th on the grid. It was Hamilton's second home win at the British Grand Prix, his fifth of the season and the 27th of his career drawing him level with fellow-Briton three-time champion Jackie Stewart in the record books.

5) Goa Governor BV Wanchoo resigned: Goa Governor BV Wanchoo has resigned, hours after he was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation today as a witness in connection with alleged irregularities in the purchase of 12 helicopters meant for VVIP use from AgustaWestland, an Anglo-Indian defence manufacturer.

7) Petra Kvitova lifts second Wimbledon title: Petra Kvitova claimed her second Wimbledon title in four years when she demolished rising Canadian star Genie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0, in Saturday's women's final at the All England Club. The sixth-seed Kvitova, needed just 55 minutes to end the run of the 13-seed Bouchard in the most one sided ladies final since 1992, when Steffi Graf dropped only three games on her way to victory over Monica Seles. Kivtova's only other Grand Slam title came in 2011, when she defeated Maria Sharapova in the final of Wimbledon.


8) RBI's H R Khan gets 2-year extension: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday said the Centre had reappointed Harun Rashid Khan as the central bank's deputy governor for two more years, effective Friday. On July 1, 2011, Khan was appointed deputy governor for a term of three years, which was to expire on Thursday. Khan has been in charge of several important portfolios such as foreign exchange, external investments and operations and internal debt management.

1) Prime Minister Dedicates Udhampur - Katra New Railway Line to the Nation: The Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi on 4 July 2014 dedicated to the nation the newly constructed railway line between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Udhampur in the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). 

Shri Modi also flagged off first train –a DMU – from newly constructed Shri Mata Vaishnodevi Katra Railway Station at a programme held at Katra, The Guests of Honour present at the function included Shri N. N. Vohra, Governor of J&K and Shri Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of J&K. The function was presided over by Shri D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Minister of Railways.

2) Ram Naresh Yadav sworn-in as Chhattisgarh Governor: Ram Naresh Yadav was sworn-in as the Governor of Chhattisgarh following the resignation of Shekhar Dutt. He is presently the Madhya Pradesh Governor and has been given the additional charge of Chhattisgarh. Chief Justice Yatindra Singh of Bilaspur High Court administered the oath of office to Yadav in a function organized at Raj Bhawan.

3) Mumbai's iconic Express Towers sold for Rs 870 crore: The landmark Express Towers building in Nariman Point, once the tallest building in South Asia, has been sold for close to Rs. 870 crore. Anant Goenka, director of the Indian Express , the newspaper group that owned the South Mumbai building along with ICICI Ventures, confirmed the sale.

4) FIFA 2014- Germany becomes first team to reach four semi-finals in a row: Germany held on to defeat France by a 1-0 margin in the first quarter final match on 4 July 2014. The lone goal came in the 13th minute of the game off a set piece. A kick from Toni Kroos curled towards the back post and found defender Mats Hummels. It is a big achievement and is the fourth consecutive semifinals berth for the German team, a new World Cup record. Unfortunately they haven’t won a World Cup in that stretch. 5) Federer and Djokovic to meet in Wimbledon final: Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will meet for the Wimbledon title after the old guard held off the new in the semifinals Friday at the All England Club.

6) PM Narendra Modi inaugurated Uri hydroelectric project: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 4 July 2014 inaugurated the 240-Megawatt Uri-II Hydro Electric Project (HEP) located near the Line of Control in Baramulla district of Kashmir. The Prime Minister dedicated the power project to the nation in presence of Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and top officials of National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).

7) ICAI to launch TV channel on Aug 15: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will use the DTH platform of the Ministry of Human Resource Development to launch its TV channel on August 15. ICAI President K. Raghu said the proposed move would benefit nearly 8.3 lakh students pursuing the chartered accountancy course besides commerce students. It would be a free channel.
