1) Muzaffar Ali to get Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award: Noted filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, who had directed the Bollywood classic “Umrao Jaan”, has been selected for Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award for his outstanding contribution towards the promotion of communal harmony, peace and goodwill. It carries a citation and cash award of Rs 5 lakh. The decision to honour the 69-year-old film maker, social worker and sufi poet was taken at a meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award. This will be the 22nd edition of the Sadbhavana award, which will be presented at a special ceremony at Jawahar Bhavan on August 20, the birthday of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Congress president Sonia Gandhi has been presenting the award ever since it was constituted.

2) Dipa Karmakar wins historic bronze in gymnastics at 2014 Commonwealth Games: Young Dipa Karmarkar scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games after she bagged a bronze in the vault event on 31 July 2014. The 20-year-old from Tripura collected 14.366 points to finish third in the women`s vault final at the SSE Hydro. The gold went to England`s Claudia Fragapane who got 14.633 points while Elsabeth Black was second with 14.433 points. The officer was till now working as the Member (Investigations) of the direct taxes revenue collection board. 1) Dalbir Singh Suhag takes over as new Army chief:  Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag has taken over as the head of the 1.3 million strong Indian Army, succeeding General Bikram Singh. Suhag, whose appointment had kicked up a row, was designated as Army chief in May by the outgoing UPA government ignoring protests from his predecessor Gen VK Singh and BJP. 

59-year-old Lt Gen Suhag, a Gurkha officer who had participated in the 1987 Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) operation in Sri Lanka, is currently the Vice Chief of Army Staff. He will have a tenure of 30 months as the 26th Chief of the armed forces.

2) Deputy NSA Nehchal Sandhu resigned:  Deputy national security advisor Nehchal Sandhu on 31 July 2014 resigned from his post citing "personal reasons". The former Intelligence Bureau chief had tendered his resignation on Wednesday which was accepted by the government on Thursday. A statement from the PMO said, "The resignation has been accepted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with regret." Sources, however, said the deputy NSA had been nudged by the government to relinquish his post just as several governors and other retired officials holding important positions resigned recently after getting signal from the government.

3) John Kerry meets Narendra Modi in prelude to Washington summit: President Barack Obama is looking forward to a summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September to set an "ambitious new agenda" to chart a new course in the bilateral ties, top US functionaries John Kerry and Penny Pritzker said on Friday. Kerry, US secretary of state, and Pritzker, secretary of commerce, conveyed this during a meeting here with Modi who said the two countries should prepare for concrete outcomes during the summit to take the relationship to "an entirely new level on the basis of vision, strategy and action plan."

4) India lose third test against England by 266 runs: England ended a run of 10 Tests without a win by beating India by 266 runs in the third Test at Southampton on Thursday, a result that levelled the five-match series at 1-1. India, resuming on their overnight 112 for four, were bowled out in under 25 overs Thursday for 178 before lunch on the final day in pursuit of what would have been a new fourth innings record winning total of 445. Victory saw England end a winless Test sequence stretching back nearly a year to their defeat of Australia at Durham in August 2013. Off-spinner Moeen Ali did the bulk of the damage with Test-best figures of six for 67, including a spell of four for 17 in 22 balls on Thursday, the all-rounder ending the match by bowling India last man Pankaj Singh.

5) Mundra appointed RBI deputy governor: The government has appointed S S Mundra, chairman and managing director of Bank of Baroda (BoB), a deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Mundra (60), who will assume charge on Thursday, has been given a three-year term. Mundra took charge as chairman and managing director of BoB in January 2013. Prior to his elevation, he was the executive director of Union Bank of India. One post of RBI deputy governor fell vacant after K C Chakrabarty retired nearly three months before schedule, in the last week of April. Of the four deputy governors, two are selected from outside RBI, while the other two are from within. Of the two outsiders, one is a commercial banker and the other an economist.  Earlier in July, RBI extended Deputy Governor H R Khan's term by two years.

6) New Delhi to host 3rd India-Africa Summit this year: New Delhi will host the Third India-Africa Forum Summit, IAFS-III, on the 4th of December this year. 1) Jacques Kallis retired from all formats of International Cricket: Veteran South Africa cricketer Jacques Kallis on Wednesday announced his retirement from all formats of cricket. He had previously retired from Test cricket after the series against India in December 2013. Kallis - rated as one of the biggest stars of contemporary international cricket - played 166 Tests, 328 ODIs and 25 T20Is in career spanning 19 years. The all-rounder scored 13289 Test runs and another 11579 in ODIs and 666 in T20Is respectively. 

2) Landslide kills 20 in village near Pune: At least 20 persons were crushed to death and 126 others trapped under debris after a landslide triggered by the relentless rain hit the remote tribal village of Malin in Ambegaon taluka of Pune district early on Wednesday morning. District Collector Saurabh Rao said six people had been extricated from the rubble and another 14 were reported injured. Rescue operations will continue through the night. The village with a population of 700 is at the base of a hill, 112 kilometres from Pune city and near the ancient Bhimashankar temple.

3) IAF chief Arup Raha takes over as new CoSC: IAF chief Arup Raha 0n 30 July 2014 took over as the Chairman, Chiefs of Staffs Committee from incumbent Gen Bikram Singh who is retiring on Thursday. The chairman, Chiefs of Staffs Committee is the senior-most military officer in the country. Raha was handed over the baton of the COSC by Gen Singh at a ceremony in South Block, defence officials said. Raha, 59, will hold the office for a period of 29 months and would probably be the longest-serving officer in the chair. He has got the long tenure because of the resignation of former Navy Chief Admiral DK Joshi in February after a series of mishaps involving naval warships. Raha will continue in office till December 2016 and is expected to push for increasing jointmanship among the three services as the CoSC.

4) Iraq elects Fuad Masum as president: Iraqi lawmakers elected a veteran Kurdish politician as the nation’s new president on Thursday, hours after an attack on a prison convoy killed dozens of people, brutally underscoring the challenges faced by the country’s leaders as they struggle to form a new government. The 76-year-old Fuad Masum, one of the founders of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party led by Iraq’s previous President Jalal Talabani, accepted the mostly ceremonial position after winning two—thirds of the votes in parliament, noting the “huge security, political and economic tasks” facing the next government.

5) Chowdary tipped to be new CBDT chief: Senior IRS officer K V Chowdary is tipped to be the new Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex authority of the Income Tax Department. The 1978-batch Indian Revenue Service officer is presently working as the Member (Investigations) in the CBDT and is expected to take over the new charge from August 1 after incumbent Chairman R K Tewari retires on July 31. Tewari, a 1976-batch IRS officer, has been at the helm for the last five months after he took over the top post on March 1.

6) NASA rover breaks out-of-this-World Distance Record: The US space agency's Opportunity rover has now clocked more miles on Mars than any man-made vehicle to reach another celestial body, NASA said Monday. Since arriving on the Red Planet in 2005, the solar-powered robot has journeyed across 25 miles (40 kilometers) of Martian terrain. That surpasses the previous record, held by the Soviet Union's Lunokhod 2 rover, which landed on the Moon in 1973.


7) Chinese journalist, lawyer win Magsaysay award: An influential Chinese journalist and a crusading environmental lawyer from China are among this year's winners of Asia's Magsaysay awards, the organisers announced. The Manila-based Ramon Magsaysay Award, named after a Filipino president who was killed in a plane crash, was established in 1957 to honour people or groups who change communities for the better and is often described as Asia's Nobel Prize. Among this year's six awardees is Hu Shuli, 61, founder and editor of Caijing, a business magazine famed for its groundbreaking investigative reporting that has had a profound impact on China.

1) Eid – ul-Fitr celebrated across Nation: Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan, was celebrated across the country on 29 July 2014 (Tuesday). Ramzan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed as a fasting period by Muslims who abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset and it culminates in Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. 

2) International Tiger Day 2014 observed across the world: The World on 29 July 2014 observed the International Tiger Day. The day is celebrated as an awareness day. The goal of the Tiger Day is to promote protection and expansion of the wild tiger habitats and also to gain support awareness for tiger conservation.

3) Neel Mukherjee longlisted for Man Booker prize: Neel Mukherjee, a London-based writer whose recently published novel, The Lives of Others, won rave reviews, has been long-listed for the Man Booker prize 2014, which, for the first time, has admitted novels in English from across the globe. Kolkata-born Mukherjee's novel, set in 1960s West Bengal, is his third novel. His first, Past Continuous, won the Vodafone-Crossword Award in India, the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award for best fiction, and was shortlisted for the inaugural DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. The longlist includes 13 books by four Americans, six Britons, two Irish writers and one Australian. Man Booker  trustees decided this year to change the rules which had previously allowed only British and Commonwealth authors to be considered for the prize. One former Man Booker winner, Howard Jacobson, is on the longlist along with two previously shortlisted authors, Ali Smith and David Mitchell.

4) Reliance Power to buy Jaiprakash's hydropower business: Reliance Power Ltd will buy Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd's entire hydropower business, the companies said on Monday, in a deal that would make billionaire Anil Ambani's group the largest private hydropower provider in India. Reliance CleanGen Ltd, which with Reliance Power is part of Ambani's Reliance Group, has signed an exclusive memorandum of understanding with Jaiprakash to buy three power plants.

5) Flipkart raises $ 1bn in fund - highest in Indian e-commerce: Flipkart on Tuesday announced it has raised $1 billion (Rs 6,000 crore), the largest ever fund-raising by an Indian internet company. The company declined to disclose the valuation at which it has raised funding. However, according to multiple people involved in the deal, the Bangalore-based company is now valued at about $7 billion. "This is a great milestone for Flipkart and for internet companies in India. It is a whole new benchmark we have set," said Sachin Bansal, co-founder and chief executive. The seven-year-old firm was valued at $2.6 billion at the time.

6)  ICC bans Moeen Ali from wearing 'Save Gaza' wristbands: England batsman Moeen Ali has been banned from wearing wristbands featuring the slogans "Save Gaza" and "Free Palestine", the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday. Moeen, who is Muslim and of Pakistani descent, helped raise funds for charities working with those affected by the three-week conflict with Israel. He wore the wristbands on Monday's second day of the third Test against India at Southampton. Moeen, 27, risked disciplinary action under the ICC Code of Conduct, which forbids players wearing, displaying or conveying messages through arm bands or other items on clothing or equipment without prior approval.

1) World Hepatitis Day observed: World Hepatitis Day was observed across the world on 28 July 2014. The year’s theme Think Again, acknowledges that 'we do not know nearly enough about viral hepatitis as a health threat in much of the world. The day is observed to raise awareness and influence real change in disease prevention and access to testing and treatment.

2) Govt to allow women Army officers to command certain battalions:  In a major step to increase role of women in armed forces, the NDA government is going to allow lady officers to command battalions in Army's branches such as aviation, engineers and signal. The government is planning to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court where it will say that women officers joining the force from 2015-16 onwards would be nurtured to command battalions, highly placed Army sources said here.

3) Union Government launched Rashtriya Gokul Mission: Union Government of India on 28 July 2014 launched the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (a nationwide scheme) to promote conservation and developments of indigenous breeds of cows in a focused and scientific manner. The Mission is a focused project under National Programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development.

4) PM Modi greets people on occasion of Eid: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday greeted people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and hoped that the festival strengthens the bond of peace, unity and brotherhood in the country. "Greetings on Eid-ul-Fitr. May this auspicious day strengthen the bond of peace, unity & brotherhood across our Nation," the Prime Minister said in his message. Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan, is being celebrated across the country on 29 July 2014.

5) Jitu Rai Wins Gold in 50m Pistol at CWG 2014: Shooters Jitu Rai and Gurpal Singh opened India's medal count on Monday by clinching the men's 50-metre pistol gold and silver, respectively in the finals of the Commonwealth Games at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre.


6) Debutant lifter Satish Sivalingam breaks record at CWG 2014 to win gold: Indian weightlifter Satish Sivalingam scripted history in just his debut Commonwealth Games, breaking the Games record en route to a gold medal, while compatriot Ravi Katulu took the silver in the men's 77kg event here. The 22-year-old Satish, the 2013 Commonwealth Championships gold medallist, lifted a total of 328kg (149+179) to pip the 2010 CWG gold medallist Ravi, who had to be content with a silver medal following an effort of 317kg (142+175).

1) Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo wins Hungarian Grand Prix: Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull overtook Ferrari's Fernando Alonso near the end of the race to win a thrilling Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, his second Formula One victory of the season and his career. Lewis Hamilton, who started from pit lane after his engine caught on fire during qualifying, was third, holding off Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, who started from pole position.


2) Amitabh Bachchan named Maharashtra's horticulture ambassador: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has been appointed as the horticulture ambassador of Maharashtra. The 71-year-old actor, who is also the face of Gujarat tourism, would be promoting the horticulture sector in Maharashtra. "Horticulture Ministry makes me Brand Ambassador for fruit products.. Jitendra Awhad, Minister promotes. I never knew Maharashtra was the number one state in fruit production of many varieties. Happy promoting it for Horticulture Ministry!," Bachchan posted on Twitter.

3) Bharti Airtel crossed 300-million customers milestone: Bharti Airtel, India's largest telecom firm, has crossed 300-million-customers mark across its mobile, fixed line, DSL and DTH services. The company, which began operations in 1995, reached the 100 million customers mark in 2009 and crossed the 200 million mark in 2012. The latest 100 million customers have joined the Airtel family in less than two years. The company ranks as the fourth largest mobile service provider globally and second largest globally outside of China, Airtel said in a statement.


4) Italian Vincenzo Nibali won 101st edition of Tour de France: Italian cyclist Vincenzo Nibali has been crowned '2014 Tour de France' champion. He is the 10th Italian overall and only the first since the Marco Pantani's glory in 1998 competition. He thus gets to wear the Yellow Jersey thats given to the Champion (overall race leader on total time since the start of the Tour) as a trophy.

1) 15th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas observed: The country celebrates the 15th anniversary of its triumph in Kargil War. This is also an occasion that invokes feelings of both pain and pride for the families of the brave jawans who laid down their lives protecting the territory of India from intruders. Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, Army chief Bikram Singh,Navy chief Robin Dhowan and Air Force chief Arup Raha paid tribute to martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate in New Delhi.

2) BJP veteran Kaptan Singh Solanki appointed Haryana Governor: Veteran BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member Kaptan Singh Solanki was on Saturday appointed the Governor of Haryana in place of Jagannath Pahadia who had completed his tenure. A Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said the President has appointed Solanki as Governor of Haryana with immediate effect.

3) Sushma Swaraj ends Nepal visit: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj averted a diplomatic disaster by meeting leaders of the ruling CPN-UML just before returning to India after a three-day visit which she said was "productive" and "successful". The hour-long meeting between Sushma Swaraj and the CPN-UML party took place at Hyatt Regency Kathmandu where eight party leaders led by Deputy Prime Minister Bam Dev Gautam were present.

4) Malabar Naval Exercise featuring Indian, Japanese and US Navy started: Malabar Naval exercise 2014 started in the Pacific Ocean. Malabar naval exercise 2014 is the 18th edition of the Malabar series conducted to enhance multinational maritime relationships and mutual security issues.

5) PM launched unique web platform to get citizens' ideas for governance: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a web platform - MyGov - which will allow common man and experts from different fields to reach out to the government with their ideas a nd suggestions. The web platform - www.mygov.nic.in- is devised in such a way that it allows the citizens to discuss their ideas with experts within and outside the government and even earn "credit points" for the tasks which would eventually be approved for implementation by concerned departments\agencies.


6) Veteran journalist Sundaram Sankaran passed away: undaram Sankaran, a former World Bank official and a well known journalist, has passed away at his residence in Kensington, Maryland in the United States. He was 87. He is survived by his wife Seetha and four children. Sankaran died on July 19, his family members said. Having served the World Bank for over 25 years in Washington D.C., Sankaran, played an important role in shaping the Bank’s information policy in developing countries. He retired in 1988 as Chief of the Bank’s Public Affairs Division.
