1) M.L. Khattar to be next Haryana CM: Manohar Lal Khattar will be the next chief minister of Haryana, the BJP announced on Tuesday. The former Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) ‘Pracharak’ was chosen by the newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party legislators as their leader at a meeting. “I have been chosen by the party legislators and the BJP leadership for this responsibility. I can assure you that we will work for the welfare of the people of Haryana,” Khattar said after being elected the leader of the BJP legislative group. Khattar, 60, will be the first BJP chief minister of the state, which was formed Nov 1, 1966. The BJP got the majority on its own for the first time in Haryana in the results of the elections to the 90-member Assembly declared on Sunday.

2) Oscar Pistorius sentenced to five years in prison for killing girlfriend:  South African Paralympian star sprinter Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday for the killing of his girlfriend last year, as his sensational trial reached a climax. Pistorius, who had vomited and wept at times during the trial, stood stock-still in the dock as he was sentenced, veins bulging in his forehead and his jaw muscles clenched.

3) UK announced first-ever Dadabhai Naoroji Awards: The UK government announced the inaugural Dadabhai Naoroji Awards to honour individuals who have worked to strengthen the UK-India relationship over the years. The three winners included UK India Business Council chair Patricia Hewitt in the commerce category, Dame Asha Khemka for services in the field of education and actor Madhav Sharma for culture.

4) Indian hockey coach Terry Walsh withdraws resignation: In a massive relief to the Indian hockey, chief coach Terry Walsh, who resigned on Tuesday, has withdrawn his resignation after meeting with Sports Authority of India (SAI). Walsh resigned from his post barely three weeks after guiding the team to a historic gold medal in the Asian Games in Incheon and it created quite a flutter in the hockey world. He tendered his resignation because of a "pay dispute". The 60-year-old Australian, himself a noted Olympian, submitted his resignation in dramatic fashion, saying that he was finding it difficult to adjust to the decision making style of the sporting bureaucracy in the country.

5) RTI replies to be put online: Starting next month, all replies given under RTI by ministries will be posted online, available for access to all and not just to persons seeking the information. This will mean unprecedented scale of disclosure and cheer transparency advocates, especially those in the NGO sector with whom this government has had a testy relationship. Until now, only the person filing the RTI application seeking replies from a ministry or a government department would get the reply and that too mostly via post.

6) Global Iodine deficiency disorders prevention Day observed: Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders (GIDD) Prevention Day observed across the World on 21 October 2014. The day was observed to create awareness of the need to prevent iodine deficiency. One third of the world population is exposed to the risk of iodine deficiency disorders. Over 740 million people in 130 countries are facing the health problem.

7) Government to merge crisis-hit NSEL with Financial Technologies: The government has ordered the merger of scam-hit National Spot Exchange (NSEL) with parent Financial Technologies (India), initiating a transaction between two private companies for the first time in the larger public interest.


8) MS Dhoni rested, Virat Kohli to lead India against Sri Lanka: Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar were left out of the squad for the first three of the five One-Day Internationals(ODI) against Sri Lanka, starting November 2, while star batsman Virat Kohli was named as the stand-in skipper of the 15-man squad selected on Tuesday.

1) Joko Widodo takes over as Indonesian president: Indonesia's Joko Widodo took over as president of the world's third-largest democracy on 20 Oct 2014 with supporters' hopes high but pressing economic problems and sceptical rivals set to test the former furniture businessman. Widodo's narrow victory over a former general in July's election marked the first time in the young democracy's history that a president was elected from outside the established military and political elite.

2) Govt brings in ordinance to e-auction cancelled coal mines: In a move to decide the fate of coal blocks that were de-allocated by the Supreme Court recently, the government on 20 Oct 2014 proposed an ordinance to allow e-auction of mines to private players while adding that state-run companies would be allocated mines directly. The process would be completed in three-four months, finance minister Arun Jaitley said, adding that proceeds of the auction would go directly to states where respective mines are located.

3) World Osteoporosis Day observed: World Osteoporosis Day is observed annually on 20 October, and launches a year-long campaign dedicated to raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. Organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), World Osteoporosis Day involves campaigns by national osteoporosis patient societies from around the world with activities in over 90 countries. Osteoporosis is a disease that gradually weakens bones, making them fragile, able to break very easily. Fractures may occur after a small fall, as a result of a sneeze, and even bending over to tie a shoelace.

4) Govt forms panel to frame bankruptcy code: The government has set up a committee to frame bankruptcy law to enable entrepreneurs to close down unviable businesses. The committee under T K Vishwanathan, former Law Secretary, will study the corporate bankruptcy legal framework in India and submit a report by February next year, Finance Ministry said in a statement. Finance Minster Arun Jaitley in 2014-15 Budget had announced that an entrepreneur friendly legal bankruptcy framework would be developed for SMEs to enable easy exit.

5) Nigeria declared Ebola-free by WHO: One of the worst affected countries with Ebola - Nigeria, has been declared disease free. The World Health Organisation declared that Nigeria has successfully contained the virus that has killed more than 4,500 people till now and is steadily spreading across the globe. Africa's most populous country has seen eight deaths due to an outbreak which saw 20 people infected. 


6) 123-year-old Mohammedan Sporting Club to shut down: As football fans in India welcomed the birth of a new tournament in Indian Super League (ISL) last week, Monday (October 20) marked the end of one of the country's oldest clubs - Mohammedan Sporting Club. The 123-year-old Mohammedan Sporting Club in Kolkata has decided to shut down due to financial crisis. Founded in 1891, Mohammedan Sporting Club is one of the oldest clubs in India. The players had not received their salaries for the last three months, according to reports. The club's last major titles came in 2013 when it won the Durand Cup and IFA Shield.

1) BJP to form govt in Haryana, emerges as single largest party in Maharashtra: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stormed to power in Haryana on Sunday and was set to form the government in Maharashtra as well, in a verdict that underlined Prime Minister Narendra Modi's indisputable role in helping expand the party's national footprint. Both victories are historic for the BJP. In Haryana, where the party had never been a force, it won 47 seats in a 90-member assembly to take power on its own. In Maharashtra, it emerged as the single largest party, bagging 122 seats in the 288-member House — which is enough to form a coalition government on its own terms.

2) Pritam Munde creates new record, won by record 6.96 lakh vote margin: Bhartiya Janta Party nominee for the Beed Lok Sabha by-election Dr Pritam Munde-Palve has created new records by winning the Beed LS seat by a whopping margin of 6.96 lakh votes against her nearest rival Congress nominee and former minister Ashok Patil. In the 2004 LS poll, CPI-M candidate from Arambagh (West Bengal) Anil Basu demolished his rival with the highest ever victory margin of 5,92,502 votes. Also in the recent LS election PM Narendra Modi had won by margin of 5.70 lakh votes from Vadodara. Setting a new record in poll history Dr Munde polled 9,22,416 votes against Patil's 2,26,095 votes, leading to the rest of the 10 candidates forfeiting their deposit.

3) India clinched Sultan of Johor Cup: A dominant India triumphed in the 3rd Sultan of Johor Cup with a thumping 3-0 victory over hosts Malaysia in the title clash of the U-21 hockey tournament. Amon Mirash Tirkey (22nd), Affan Yusof (52) and Manpreet (64th) were the goal-scorers for India who made up for last year’s defeat in the final against Germany. India were the deserving winners on a day when Malaysia failed to find the spark that had seen them make the final with relative ease. India drew first blood in the 22nd minute when Tirkey scored after a fine run on the left by Kothajit Singh.
 
4) Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games open: South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hung Won and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Sir Philip Craven were amongst the dignitaries on Saturday (18 October) who attended the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea. In a colourful laser light show and presentation which carried the theme “Impossible Drives Us”, the ceremony welcomed 2,500 athletes from 41 countries who will compete in 23 sports over the next seven days.

1) Union Cabinet deregulated diesel price, approves new gas price formula: In much-awaited reform, the government on Saturday deregulated diesel prices, a move that will result in cut of Rs 3.37 per litre in diesel price. Finance minister Arun Jaitely said the Cabinet in its meeting decided to deregulate or free diesel prices. As a result, retail diesel rates will now reflect international movement in oil prices. This is the first reduction in diesel rates in over five years. Diesel rates were last cut on January 29, 2009 when they were reduced by Rs 2 a litre to Rs 30.86.

2) Karur Vysya Bank gets IDRBT award: Karur Vysya Bank has bagged the Best Bank Award for Business Intelligence Initiatives among small banks. The bank's Managing Director and Chief Executive, K Venkataraman, received the award from the Governor of Reserve Bank of India, Raghuram G Rajan. The IDRBT(Institute for Development and Research in Banking) Banking Technology Excellence award is for 2013-14. IDRBT has recognised KVB for this award for the sixth year in a row. 

3) New Twitter feature allows users to listen to music: Twitter will now allow users to play podcasts, music and other audio clips direct from their timelines for the first time, the microblogging site has said. The social networking site has added a new feature to allow its users to listen music directly from the twitter stream on mobile devices. “The world’s most influential musicians and media producers already share unique audio content through Twitter every day. Today we’re introducing a new way for you to experience audio directly on Twitter,” Twitter said in a blog post.


4) Corporation Bank launched ‘e-Mandate’ service: To provide robust platform for large volume of repetitive payments, Corporation Bank has launched the ‘e-Mandate’ (digital mandate) service. A press release by the bank said that the ‘e-Mandate’ service will be beneficial to the utility companies for monthly subscriptions/bill payments; insurance companies for premium payment by policy holders; NBFCs and other finance companies for instalment payments; education institutions for school fee payment; and manufacturing companies. Now most of these transactions are done either through post-dated blank cheques or through Electronic Clearing Services (ECS). Both the above payment modes involve physical handling and movement of paper-based instruments such as cheques and mandate (in ECS).

17 October 2014 Current Affairs Updates

1) Supreme Court granted bail to Jayalalithaa in DA case: The Supreme Court has granted interim bail to AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, who was sentenced to four years in jail in a high-profile corruption case that has lasted nearly two decades. Alongwith Jayalalithaa, her aide Sasikala and two others have also been granted bail. Jayalalithaa was granted bail of grounds of ill health.

2) India test-fired nuclear-capable Nirbhay cruise missile: India's indigenously developed nuclear capable sub-sonic cruise missile 'Nirbhay', which can strike targets more than 700 kms away, was test-fired from a test range at Chandipur. "The missile was test-fired from a mobile launcher positioned at launch pad 3 of the Integrated Test Range at about 10.03 hours," said an official soon after the flight took off from the launch ground. It is the second test of the sub-sonic long range cruise missile 'Nirbhay' from the ITR.

3) International Day for the Eradication of Poverty observed: The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated every year on October 17 throughout the world. It was officially recognised by the United Nations. Theme for 2014 is: Leave no one behind: think, decide and act together against extreme poverty. The annual day, in observance since 1993, is celebrated to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries.

4) West Indies cricket team pulled out of India tour: The West Indies tour to India has come to an abrupt end, with the BCCI saying it had been called off by the WICB and announcing a replacement tour. The WICB initially released a statement saying it had not called off the tour, but following a meeting after the fourth ODI in Dharamsala, it clarified that it was "left no option" by the West Indies players. The developments followed a protracted payment structure dispute between the players, the WICB and West Indies Players' Association. At the end of the game, the official broadcaster Star Sports displayed India as the winners of the ODI series by a 2-1 margin, though no trophy was given to MS Dhoni at the presentation ceremony.

5) Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain and Venezuela elected as non-permanent members of UNSC: Venezuela, Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand and Spain on 16 October 2014 were elected as non-permanent members of United Nations Security Council (UNSC). They were elected after member states voted in support of these five nations after three rounds of voting. All these five new members received over two-thirds of the votes cast in a secret ballot. The new members of the Security Council will begin their two-year appointment on 1 January 2015 and will serve on the Council until 31 December 2016.


6) India-born scientist Sanjaya Rajaram awarded World Food Prize:  India-born Mexican scientist Sanjaya Rajaram has been presented with the prestigious World Food Prize 2014 for his agricultural research that led to a remarkable increase in world wheat production building on the successes of the Green Revolution.
