1) Election
Commission announced poll dates for J&K, Jharkhand: Election Commission
on Saturday announced a five-phase assembly poll in Jammu & Kashmir and
Jharkhand from November 25 to December 20. Three assembly seats in Delhi —
Mehrauli, Tughlaqabad and Krishna Nagar — will also have bypolls on November
25, along with the first phase of J&K and Jharkhand election, in an outcome
which may have a bearing on whether a government will be formed in the Capital
from the existing assembly or it will have to go for fresh polls. The first
phase of polling in Jharkhand and J&K on November 25 will be followed by
the second phase on December 2, third on December 9, fourth on December 14 and
fifth and final phase on December 20. Counting for the two states as well as Delhi
bypolls will be held on December 23, Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath
announced at a press conference.

3) Centre
gives nod to defence projects worth Rs 80,000 cr: Defence projects worth a
whopping Rs 80,000 crore were cleared by the government which decided that six
submarines will be made indigenously and over 8,000 Israeli anti-tank guided
missiles and 12 upgraded Dornier surveillance aircraft will be purchased. The
decisions were taken following a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council,
chaired by Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, that lasted for over two hours with
Defence Secretary, the Chiefs of all three services, DRDO Chief and other
senior officials attending it. The bulk of the decisions went in favour of the
Navy that was in dire need of up-gradation and capability enhancement.

to have June 21 commemorated each year as the 'International Day of Yoga' at
the United Nations, aiming to bring to fruition the idea floated by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi in his maiden address to the UN General Assembly last

chief Sundar Pichai to head Google’s products business: India-born chief of
Google’s Android unit, Sundar Pichai, will now lead the US-based search engine
giant’s global products business as part of management reorganisation.
According to industry sources, Google CEO Larry Page is transferring leadership
of core Google products to Pichai, who will now oversee products like search,
maps, Google+, commerce, advertising and infrastructure.

buys Ranchi franchise of Hockey India League: After motorsports and football,
Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has now lent his support to
Indian hockey by becoming the owner of the Ranchi franchise of the Hockey India
League (HIL). Dhoni bought the team along with Sahara India Pariwar, who
already is the owner of the Uttar Pradesh Wizards side in the HIL. The new
Ranchi franchise will be known as 'Ranchi Rays' from third edition of HHIL to
be held in January-February next year.

suspended Atletico de Kolkata coach and two players: All India Football Federation
suspended head coach of Atletico de Kolkata Antonio Lopez Habas for four
matches while two players Robert Pires and Fikru Lemessa have been banned for
two matches for breaching disciplinary code during the ongoing Indian Super
League. Both the players and the coach were involved in ugly altercations
during an ill-tempered match between Atletico de Kolkata and FC Goa at Margao
on October 23.

1) United
Nations Day celebrated: United Nations Day was celebrated across the globe
on October 24, 2014. The event, in observance since 1948, marks the foundation
day of the world body created on the same day in 1945. United Nations Day is
devoted to making known to peoples of the world the aims and achievements of
the United Nations Organization. The UN's World Development Information Day has
also been held on 24 October since 1972.
2) Committee
set up to draft national National Intellectual Property Rights policy: The
Commerce and Industry Ministry on Friday constituted a six-member think tank to
draft the National Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) policy. The panel, to be
chaired by retired Justice Prabha Sridevan, will identifies areas in IPRs where
study needs to be conducted and furnish recommendations in this regard to the
Ministry, an official statement said. The expert group, set up by Department of
Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), will also advise the government on best
practices to be followed in trademark offices, patent offices and other
government offices dealing with IPRs to create an efficient and transparent
system of functioning in the said offices.

celebrated 53rd raising day: Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday saluted
the brave ITBP personnel on their 53rd Raising Day. The ITBP was raised (started)
on October 24, 1962. Presently, the ITBP is deployed on border guarding duties
from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh covering 3,488
km of Indo-China border and manning Border Outposts on altitudes raging from
9000' to 18700' in the Western, Middle and Eastern Sector of the Indo-China
border.

first fish hospital to come up in Kolkata: The country’s first hospital to
treat abnormalities and diseases in fish is set to come up in Kolkata by
mid-2015, a senior scientist said. Senior scientist T J Abraham, who is
spearheading the project told PTI that the work has already started on the
project. He said that nearly 60-65 kinds of disease and abnormality were found
in fishes in India and the one reason why West Bengal slipped from the number
one position in fish production was due to the fact that 10-20 per cent of them
died of diseases.

Tamil actor SS Rajendran dead: Tamil cinema's yesteryear actor SS Rajendran
breathed his last on Friday. He was 85. Rajendran, who made his cinematic debut
with 1952 Tamil film "Parasakthi", has also starred in films like
"Ratha Kanner", "Rangoon Radha" and "Sivagangai
Seemai". He is often refered to as first actor legislator of Indian
Politics.

1) India
celebrated Diwali with traditional fervour: Diwali, the festival of lights,
was celebrated with traditional fervour across the country with people
exchanging sweets and gifts with friends and relatives, decking up their houses
with earthen diyas and tiny lights and illuminating the evening sky with
fireworks. Diwali is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya from
his exile after vanquishing demon-king Ravana.
2) PM
Modi visits Siachen, meets soldiers on Diwali: Prime Minister Narendra Modi
on Thursday morning visited forward posts in the Siachen Glacier-Saltoro Ridge
region, ahead of his scheduled visit to be with flood-hit people of J&K on
Diwali. "It's my good fortune that I will be able to spend time with our
brave soldiers on this special day," Modi tweeted on Thursday morning.
Siachen, often described as the world's highest, coldest and costliest
battlefield, is one of the eight points in the stalled composite dialogue
process with Pakistan.

Modi announced Rs 745 crore for Jammu & Kashmir: Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on Thursday announced Rs 175 crore for renovation of six major
hospitals and Rs 570 crore for the rebuilding homes damaged in the recent
floods in Jammu & Kashmir. Announcing this in Srinagar, the Prime Minister
also assured of all possible assistance from the Centre to the state to help it
recover from the devastation caused by the floods. Modi said the loss memo of
Rs 44,000 crore submitted to the Centre by the state government was being
considered.
4) Google
launched new email service dubbed ‘Inbox’: Google Inc launched an email
service called 'Inbox' on Wednesday that will better organize emails and
display information such as appointments, flight bookings and package
deliveries in a more user-friendly way. Google said it was sending out
invitations to selected Gmail users to try out the new service. Users can also
email the company at inbox@google.com to get an invitation.
5) Microsoft
to drop Nokia name from smartphones in India by year-end: Microsoft is set
to drop the iconic Nokia name from its smartphones in India by the end of this
year, as the US giant embarks on a drive to give a new identity to a brand that
was once a synonym for mobile handsets. According to people in the know,
Microsoft will be undertaking the rebranding exercise country-by-country,
instead of doing it in one sweep globally. The first brand change will happen
in France, where, over the coming days, the Nokia name will be replaced on its
Facebook, Twitter and other social media accounts by "Microsoft
Lumia", the new brand identity.
6) Kosovo
granted provisional Olympic recognition by IOC: Kosovo is on track to take
part in its first ever Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 after the region
in the Balkans was granted provisional recognition by the International Olympic
Committee on Wednesday. It could now achieve full membership as early as the
IOC session in December, the IOC said in a statement on Wednesday. The decision
angered Serbia's Olympic Committee which has lodged an official protest with
the Olympic body. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, almost a
decade after NATO went to war to halt the massacre and expulsion of Albanians
by Serbian forces waging a two-year counter-insurgency.

Time Table of UPSC Civil Services Main Exam 2014 published

(UPSC) has published the timetable for Civil Services Mains Exam 2014. Mains Exam
is scheduled to be held from December 14 to December 20 in two sessions. There
will be 7 papers in the main exam for a total of 1750 marks.
The UPSC (Mains) this year has a revised pattern and consists of the papers as mentioned below :
Paper 1 - Essay
It is of 250 marks, which can be written in any medium or language of candidate's coice.
Paper 2 - General Studies-I
The paper is of 250 marks involving Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society
Paper 3 - General Studies -II
The paper is of 250 marks involving Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management
