1) Manohar
Lal Khattar sworn in as CM of BJP's first govt in Haryana: Manohar Lal
Khattar, a low-profile organization man with active RSS background, was today
sworn in as chief minister of Haryana, where BJP has formed government for the
first time on its own. Khattar a first time MLA, represents Karnal constituency
in the Haryana assembly. He is Haryana's first non-jat chief minister in 18
years. Khattar is the 10th chief minister of the state, which was created
November 1, 1966. 60-year-old Khattar, a first-time MLA from Karnal and a
non-jat leader known to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was
administered the oath along with nine ministers by governor Kaptan Singh
Solanki at a function attended by a galaxy of BJP leaders including the PM,
party chief Amit Shah, Union ministers, chief ministers of BJP ruled states and
veterans L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi.
2) Sania
Mirza-Cara Black pair clinched WTA Finals doubles title: Indian ace Sania
Mirza and her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black ended the season and their
partnership on a remarkable high by clinching the WTA finals women's doubles
title with a comprehensive triumph in the summit clash in Singapore. Sania and
Cara, making their debut at the season finale, prevailed 6-1 6-0 over Su-Wei
Hseih of Chinese Taipei and Shuai Peng of China in a clash that lasted just
about an hour. The Indo-Zimbabwean combination, which would be breaking up
after this, broke the East Asians thrice in the opening set itself and were
decisively better with their first serve.
3) Cyclone
Nilofar to bring heavy rainfall: After Hudhud that hit India's eastern
coast on October 12, it's now turn of another cyclonic storm 'Nilofar' to keep
the Met department on toes for the next four days. Its impact is likely to be
felt mid-week in Kutch area of north Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coast. The
new cyclonic storm, formed in Arabian Sea, will, however, not be as intense as
Hudhud. Nilofar is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rains in coastal
districts of Saurashtra and Kutch area of north Gujarat on Thursday.

golfer Anirban Lahiri wins Macau Open: Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri notched
up his second title of the year, lifting the Venetian Macau Open with a
sparkling final round of the five. Lahiri played brilliant golf and his superb
weekend combination of 67-66 saw him land his fifth career win on the Asian
Tour.

Ramesh to head panel on global research platform: Former Union minister Jairam Ramesh has been
named to chair a global research platform panel on sustainable development
instituted by an alliance of organisations such as UNEP, UNESCO and World
Meteorological Organization (WMO). The inaugural Future Earth Engagement
Committee is the flagship initiative of the Science and Technology Alliance for
Global Sustainability (the Alliance). Future Earth is a global research
platform providing knowledge and support to accelerate the transformations to a
sustainable world.
6) India
became the fourth largest steel maker of the World: India became the
world’s fourth largest steel producer by delivering 62.41 Million Tonnes (MT)
output from January 2014 to September 2014. The findings were published on 21
October 2014 in the World Steel Association (WSA) data. India has been the
world’s fourth largest steel maker since 2010.

Naval Command gets new Chief of Staff:
Rear Admiral Atul Kumar Jain on 26 Oct 2014 assumed office as Chief of
Staff of Southern Naval Command in Kochi. He has taken over the charge from
Rear Admiral M S Pawar, who is appointed as the Flag Officer, Maharashtra and
Gujarat area (FOMAG), a Naval press release said.

1) Election
Commission announced poll dates for J&K, Jharkhand: Election Commission
on Saturday announced a five-phase assembly poll in Jammu & Kashmir and
Jharkhand from November 25 to December 20. Three assembly seats in Delhi —
Mehrauli, Tughlaqabad and Krishna Nagar — will also have bypolls on November
25, along with the first phase of J&K and Jharkhand election, in an outcome
which may have a bearing on whether a government will be formed in the Capital
from the existing assembly or it will have to go for fresh polls. The first
phase of polling in Jharkhand and J&K on November 25 will be followed by
the second phase on December 2, third on December 9, fourth on December 14 and
fifth and final phase on December 20. Counting for the two states as well as Delhi
bypolls will be held on December 23, Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath
announced at a press conference.

3) Centre
gives nod to defence projects worth Rs 80,000 cr: Defence projects worth a
whopping Rs 80,000 crore were cleared by the government which decided that six
submarines will be made indigenously and over 8,000 Israeli anti-tank guided
missiles and 12 upgraded Dornier surveillance aircraft will be purchased. The
decisions were taken following a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council,
chaired by Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, that lasted for over two hours with
Defence Secretary, the Chiefs of all three services, DRDO Chief and other
senior officials attending it. The bulk of the decisions went in favour of the
Navy that was in dire need of up-gradation and capability enhancement.

to have June 21 commemorated each year as the 'International Day of Yoga' at
the United Nations, aiming to bring to fruition the idea floated by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi in his maiden address to the UN General Assembly last
month.

chief Sundar Pichai to head Google’s products business: India-born chief of
Google’s Android unit, Sundar Pichai, will now lead the US-based search engine
giant’s global products business as part of management reorganisation.
According to industry sources, Google CEO Larry Page is transferring leadership
of core Google products to Pichai, who will now oversee products like search,
maps, Google+, commerce, advertising and infrastructure.

buys Ranchi franchise of Hockey India League: After motorsports and football,
Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has now lent his support to
Indian hockey by becoming the owner of the Ranchi franchise of the Hockey India
League (HIL). Dhoni bought the team along with Sahara India Pariwar, who
already is the owner of the Uttar Pradesh Wizards side in the HIL. The new
Ranchi franchise will be known as 'Ranchi Rays' from third edition of HHIL to
be held in January-February next year.

suspended Atletico de Kolkata coach and two players: All India Football Federation
suspended head coach of Atletico de Kolkata Antonio Lopez Habas for four
matches while two players Robert Pires and Fikru Lemessa have been banned for
two matches for breaching disciplinary code during the ongoing Indian Super
League. Both the players and the coach were involved in ugly altercations
during an ill-tempered match between Atletico de Kolkata and FC Goa at Margao
on October 23.

1) United
Nations Day celebrated: United Nations Day was celebrated across the globe
on October 24, 2014. The event, in observance since 1948, marks the foundation
day of the world body created on the same day in 1945. United Nations Day is
devoted to making known to peoples of the world the aims and achievements of
the United Nations Organization. The UN's World Development Information Day has
also been held on 24 October since 1972.
2) Committee
set up to draft national National Intellectual Property Rights policy: The
Commerce and Industry Ministry on Friday constituted a six-member think tank to
draft the National Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) policy. The panel, to be
chaired by retired Justice Prabha Sridevan, will identifies areas in IPRs where
study needs to be conducted and furnish recommendations in this regard to the
Ministry, an official statement said. The expert group, set up by Department of
Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), will also advise the government on best
practices to be followed in trademark offices, patent offices and other
government offices dealing with IPRs to create an efficient and transparent
system of functioning in the said offices.

Advani added yet another jewel to his glowing crown, outplaying former champion
Peter Gilchrist in the 150 up points format World Billiards Championship final
and pocket his 11th world title on 24 October 2014. Advani, 29, conquered
Singapore cueist Gilchrist 6-2 in a high quality finals of the shorter format
of billiards. While Advani had lost to Gilchrist in the league stage 3-2, the
Indian seemed determined to reverse the outcome in the most crucial match of
the tournament.

Polio Day observed: World observed Polio day on 24 October 2014 spreading
the message of eradicating the disease from the globe. India has now been
declared completely free from polio. But its neighbor Pakistan accounts for 85
per cent of world polio cases.

celebrated 53rd raising day: Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday saluted
the brave ITBP personnel on their 53rd Raising Day. The ITBP was raised (started)
on October 24, 1962. Presently, the ITBP is deployed on border guarding duties
from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh covering 3,488
km of Indo-China border and manning Border Outposts on altitudes raging from
9000' to 18700' in the Western, Middle and Eastern Sector of the Indo-China
border.
6) India’s
first fish hospital to come up in Kolkata: The country’s first hospital to
treat abnormalities and diseases in fish is set to come up in Kolkata by
mid-2015, a senior scientist said. Senior scientist T J Abraham, who is
spearheading the project told PTI that the work has already started on the
project. He said that nearly 60-65 kinds of disease and abnormality were found
in fishes in India and the one reason why West Bengal slipped from the number
one position in fish production was due to the fact that 10-20 per cent of them
died of diseases.
7) Veteran
Tamil actor SS Rajendran dead: Tamil cinema's yesteryear actor SS Rajendran
breathed his last on Friday. He was 85. Rajendran, who made his cinematic debut
with 1952 Tamil film "Parasakthi", has also starred in films like
"Ratha Kanner", "Rangoon Radha" and "Sivagangai
Seemai". He is often refered to as first actor legislator of Indian
Politics.
