CRPF men died in Maoist strike in Chhattisgarh: Ending an eight-month calm,
Maoists killed 14 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, including two
officers, in Sukma district of South Chhattisgarh on 01 December 2014. The
ambush took place near Kasalpara village. “The deceased personnel include
Deputy Commandant D.S. Verma and Assistant Commandant Rajesh Kapuria of the
CRPF,” R.K. Vij, Additional Director-General of Police, Naxal Operations,
Chhattisgarh, told.
2) Non-subsidized
LPG price cut by Rs 113/cylinder, jet fuel price slashed by 4.1%: Price of
non-subsidized cooking gas (LPG) was on 01 December 2014 cut by a steep Rs 113
per cylinder and that of jet fuel (ATF) by 4.1 per cent as international oil
rates slumped to multi-year lows. A 14.2kg cylinder of non-subsidized LPG will
now cost Rs 752, down from Rs 865 previously, in Delhi, oil companies
announced.

AIDS Day observed: World AIDS Day, designated 1 December every year since
1987, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the
spread of HIV infection, and mourning those who have died of the disease.
Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations and individuals
around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and
control. The 2014 theme for World AIDS Day is “Focus, Partner, Achieve: An
AIDS-free Generation.”

Taijul Islam grabs Hat-trick on ODI debut: Young Bangladesh spinner Taijul
Islam on 1 December 2014 became the first bowler in history to claim a
hat-trick on his debut in one-day cricket, achieving the feat against Zimbabwe
in Dhaka. The 22-year-old left-armer bowled Tinashe Panyangara off the last
ball of the 27th over and then trapped John Nyumbu leg-before and bowled Tendai
Chatara off successive deliveries at the start of his next over to take a split
hat-trick. Islam finished with four for 11 in seven overs.

to host first Australia-India Test in revised schedule: The first cricket
Test between India and Australia will be held in Adelaide from December 9 after
the four-match series' schedule was revised on Monday in the wake of young
player Phillip Hughes' tragic death which left the home team distraught.
"Revised Schedule: 1st Test (December 9-13), 2nd Test (December 17-21),
3rd Test (December 26-30) and 4th Test (January 6-10). Venues: 1st Test
(Adelaide), 2nd Test (Brisbane), 3rd Test (Melbourne) and 4th Test (Sydney)
#AUSvsIND," the BCCI said on its official Twitter handle.

Messi and Neuer up for Ballon d'Or: Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who
have between them won the past six world player of the year awards, face
opposition from Germany's World Cup winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in the
short list announced by FIFA on Monday. Ronaldo, who is the present holder of
the title having also won it in 2008, scored a record 17 goals in a Champions
League campaign as Real Madrid went on to win their 10th European Cup last
term.

Government will make all pension disbursements from January -2015 through post
offices and recruit fair price shops agents as Postal agents. Chief Secretary
IYR Krishna Rao, who reviewed the distribution process of pensions at the Secretariat
on Monday, said that all dealers of fair price shops managing the PDS would be
appointed as agents of the Postal Department for the purpose of distribution of
Pensions.

Two-time World Championship bronze medallist P V Sindhu lifted her first
title of the season by successfully defending the USD 120,000 Macau Grand Prix
Gold trophy after seeing off Kim Hyo Min of Korea in the women's singles
finals. World No. 11 Sindhu prevailed over 91st-ranked, Kim 21-12 21-17 in the
summit clash that lasted 45 minutes at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion. The
bronze-medallist at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Sindhu faced tough
competition from Kim, who had come into the finals after beating seventh seed
Chinese Yu Sun but the experienced Indian held her nerves to stave off the
challenge from the Korean.

2016 mascot named Super Victor: The mascot for the the 2016 European
football championship in France has been named Super Victor in a vote of
internet users, it was announced on 30 Nov 2014. The name for the cartoon

in Goa on 30 November 2014. 'Leviathan' star Alexel Serebriakov shared the best

Rathore and Jackie Shroff. The best actress award was shared by Cuban actress

price cut by 91 paise/litre, diesel by 84 paise: State-run oil marketing
companies have slashed petrol prices by 91 paise per litre from Monday and
diesel prices by 84 paise. This is the seventh consecutive reduction in petrol
prices in the last four months and the third cut in diesel prices since October
18 when the Cabinet deregulated the fuel. Brent crude fell to a new four year
low on Friday after the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)
decided not to cut output despite a slide in prices.

1) Narendra
Modi flagged off 1st train connecting Meghalaya: Meghalaya on 29 November
2014 came on the country's rail map more than six decades after independence,
with Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagging off the first train to the
northeastern state and favouring privatisation of railway stations.
"Railway facilities are the same as they were 100 years back.... Privatise
the railway stations and modernise them," he said after flagging off the
first train linking Meghalaya. The first train from Meghalaya – the 55819 Up
Mendipathar – Guwahati. Mendipathar is the first railway station in Meghalaya
and train connectivity in the state became possible due to construction of the
19.75 km long line from Dudhnoi in Assam to Mendipathar.

Lahiri, Shamsur Rahman Faruqi in DSC Prize shortlist: Indian writer critic
Shamsur Rahman Faruqi and Indian-American author Jhumpa Lahiri are among five
authors shortlisted for next year's USD 50,000 DSC Prize for South Asian
Literature. Lahiri's novel "The Lowland", an intimate portrayal of
two brothers and political passion was earlier on the 2013 Man Booker Prize
shortlist as well. Her debut short story collection, "Interpreter of
Maladies" had won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

court dropped charges against Hosni Mubarak: A court in Egypt has dropped
charges against former President Hosni Mubarak over the killing of 239
protesters during the 2011 uprising against him. The Cairo court erupted in
cheers when the judge said Mubarak should not have been a defendant in the case
as the charges against him were added late.

to launch communication satellite GSAT-16 on December 5: India is set to
launch its latest communication satellite GSAT-16 onboard Ariane 5 rocket from
French Guiana next month. “GSAT-16 communication satellite would be launched
onboard Ariane 5 from French Guiana in the early hours of December 4 (Dec 5 in
Indian time), a senior Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) official was
quoted as saying to PTI. GSAT-16 will be the 11th among GSAT series of Indian
communication satellites and will have a mission life of more than 12 years.
GSAT-16 is similar to GSAT-15 with each satellite weighing 3,150 kg and having
power generation capacity of 6.8 kW.

first Test postponed: With the cricket world mourning Phillip Hughes’
tragic death, next week’s first Test between India and Australia was on
Saturday pushed back to an unspecified date to let the players attend the late
batsman’s funeral scheduled on Wednesday in his hometown. In a statement issued
on Saturday, Cricket Australia (CA) said that it was neither feasible nor fair
to begin the Test on December 4 as originally planned. “The first Test between
Australia and India that was scheduled to start in Brisbane next Thursday has
been postponed until an unspecified date to allow the cricket world time to
grieve over the death of Phillip Hughes,” the statement said.
