1) Narendra Modi inaugurated Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2015: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 January 2015 inaugurated the 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the world's largest annual gathering of people of Indian origin, in Gandhinagar by lighting the ceremonial lamp. The chief guest, Guyanese President Donald Ramotar, and South African foreign minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, shared the dias with Modi and Sushma Swaraj. More than 4,000 delegates have arrived for the 13th PBD, aimed at enhancing networking and reinforcing commercial linkage. The event is being held in Gandhinagar Jan 7-9 to mark the centenary of India's "sarva sreshtha pravasi Bharatiya", or foremost Indian diaspora member, Mahatma Gandhi's return to the country from South Africa.

2) Kotak Bank shareholders approved merger of ING Vysya Bank: The merger between Kotak Mahindra Bank and ING Vysya Bank has received the approval of shareholders of both. Shareholders of the Mumbai-based Kotak  bank approved the merger proposal at an extraordinary general meeting in Mumbai on 8 January 2015. The exchange ratio has been fixed at 725 Kotak shares with 1, 000 ING Vysya shares. ING Vysya Bank’s shareholders, too, had approved the merger proposal on 8 Jan 2015.

After scoring his 4th century of the series against Australia on the third day of the fourth and final Test at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Thursday, Kohli surpassed Dravid. Former captain Dravid had held the record for most runs in a series in Australia, by an Indian batsman, with 619 (2003-04 series). Now that record belongs to Kohli.

4) PM inaugurated 'Dandi Kutir' museum: PM Narendra Modi on 8 January 2015 inaugurated the state-of-the-art Dandi Kutir, a museum on the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi in Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar, on the occasion of the 13th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD). 'Dandi Kutir' is located inside a 41-metre high salt-mound as a symbol of Gandhi's famous Dandi march against the salt tax provisions imposed by the British regime in March 1930. State Chief Minister Anandiben Patel said that this is the biggest permanent museum in the world based on life of one person (Mahatma Gandhi). The 13th edition of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD) is marking the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's return to India from South Africa.

5) 19th National Youth Festival began: The 19th National Youth Festival has begun in Guwahati, Assam. This festival coincides with the 152nd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Theme of this edition of youth festival is Youth for Clean, Green and Progressive India. It aims to spread to spread national integration and harmony.

6) Indian diplomat Atul Khare named head of UN department of field support: Senior Indian diplomat Atul Khare has been named by secretary general Ban Ki-moon as the head of the UN department that provides dedicated support to peacekeeping missions around the world, making him one of the highest ranking Indian officials in the world body. Khare, 55 will succeed Bangladesh's Ameerah Haq as the under-secretary-general for field support, department of field support (DFS).

SSC CGL Tier-2 Exam 2014 on Jan 24 & 25 Postponed

Friends.. Today (8 January 2015) Staff Selection Commission (SSC) vide their notice No. F.NO. 3/12/2013-P&P-I has announced that the Combined Graduate Level (Tier-II) Exam scheduled to be held on 24th and 25th January 2015 has been postponed.

The full text of the released is a follows:

Candidates may refer to the Notice of the Combined Graduate Level Examination, 2014 published in the Employment New/Rozgar Samachar dated 18-24 January, 2014 and the tentative schedule of examination for 2015 (available on Commission’s website www.ssc.nic.in).
The Combined Graduate Level (Tier-II) Examination, 2014 which is scheduled to be held on 24th and 25th January, 2015 has been postponed. The revised dates will be announced shortly. Other contents of the Notice will remain unchanged.

1) Terrorist attack at satirical paper in Paris: Heavily armed gunmen shouting Islamist slogans stormed a Paris satirical newspaper office on 7 January 2015 and shot dead at least 12 people in the deadliest attack in France in four decades. Police launched a massive manhunt for the masked attackers who reportedly hijacked a car and sped off, running over a pedestrian and shooting at officers. The capital was placed under the highest alert status after the attack on Charlie Hebdo, a satirical weekly that has sparked anger in the past among Muslims for publishing cartoons of the prophet Mohamed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack in Paris, saying it is a despicable act.

2) Google's Larry Page named as business person of the year for 2014: Google's Larry Page has emerged as the 'business person of the year' for 2014, edging past the likes of Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, according to Fortune magazine. Page, who is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and co-founder of Google, came on top in the 20 global corporate leaders' list compiled on the basis of various factors including company's performance, leadership style and total shareholder returns, the magazine said while bringing out its list. 

3) Kailash Satyarthi dedicates Nobel medal to the nation: Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi has dedicated his Nobel Peace prize to the nation by presenting his medallion to President Pranab Mukherjee. Satyarthi called on President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on 7 January 2015 and handed over the medal. The President welcomed his gesture of presenting the Nobel Prize medal and said it will soon be kept on display in Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum. The President recalled that Dr C V Raman had also dedicated his Nobel Prize to the nation and seen the prize as a recognition of the scientific talent of India. The President commended Satyarthi for the excellent work he was doing and urged him to continue his endeavours in this regard.

4) Dinesh Oraon unanimously elected Jharkhand Speaker: BJP's Dinesh Oraon was unanimously elected as the Speaker of Jharkhand Assembly on 7 January 2015. Chief Minister Raghubar Das proposed his name and Social Welfare Minister Louis Marandi seconded it.

5) ICICI Bank launched India's first contactless credit and debit cards: ICICI Bank, the country’s largest private sector one, on 7 January 2015 announced the launch of the country’s first ‘contactless’ debit and credit cards. These enable customers to make electronic payments by waving the cards near a merchant terminal instead of dipping or swiping these. These cards are based on the near-field communication technology, which provides customers improved speed to complete a transaction, and enhanced security as they remain under the control of the customer.

6) Australian airline Qantas named world's safest airline: Australian flag carrier Qantas has been named the world`s safest airline in a report published by AirlineRatings.com on 7 January 2015. Using a system that takes into account audits from aviation governing bodies and governments, as well as fatality records, Qantas was named the safest and most experienced airline going into 2015.
