Daily Current Affairs Updates: 15 January 2015
1) Anupam
Shrivastava appointed as BSNL CMD: Anupam Shrivastava has been appointed
the chairman and managing director (CMD) of state-run BSNL from January 15, a
company statement said. “Government is focusing on connecting unconnected
people with telecom services including high-speed broadband. As BSNL CMD, it
will be my top propriety to work with government in connecting people at
affordable cost, expeditiously and at turning around BSNL into a profitable
venture,” Mr. Shrivastava said after assuming the office.
2) Haryana
government announced Baba Ramdev as its brand ambassador: BJP government in
Haryana which has ambitious plans to promote yoga and ayurveda in a big way has
appointed yoga guru Ramdev its brand ambassador. Expressing happiness at being
appointed Haryana's brand ambassador, Ramdev said considering the state
government's vision, the day was not far off when it would become India's first
yogic state.
3) World's
newest airliner Airbus A350 began first commercial flight: World's newest
jetliner, the Airbus A350, took to the skies on 15 January 2015 carrying its
first paying passengers from the Gulf Arab nation of Qatar. The Qatar Airways
flight departed the Qatari capital of Doha in the morning and landed around
12:30 p.m. local time in Frankfurt, Germany. It marks the debut of the
relatively lightweight, twin-aisle, long-range plane, which promises to connect
smaller cities with major aviation hubs nonstop at a cheaper cost for airlines.
4) Brett
Lee retired from all formats of cricket: Brett Lee has decided to bid adeau
from all the formats of game, ending a 20-year long career. The 38-year-old,
who announced his retirement on 15 January 2015 at the Sydney Cricket Ground,
called time on his international career in July 2012, but continued playing T20s
in both the Indian Premier League and the BBL.
5) RBI
cuts repo rates by 25 basis points: Encouraged by softening inflation, the
RBI on 15 January 2015 decided to cut the benchmark interest rate by 0.25 per
cent to 7.75 per cent with a view to boost growth. The decision to reduce repo
rate comes a fortnight ahead of the scheduled date of monetary policy
announcement on February 3. The RBI has been keeping the benchmark interest
rate at elevated level at 8 per cent since January 2014. The RBI, however, has
decided to keep the cash reserve ratio (CRR), the portion of deposits which the
banks are required to have in cash with the central bank, unchanged at 4.0 per
cent. Following reduction in the repo rate, the reverse repo rate has been
adjusted to 6.75 per cent and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and
Bank Rate to 8.75 per cent.
6) Reserve
Bank of India permitted banks to act as insurance brokers: Seeking to
increase insurance penetration in the country, the Reserve Bank on 15 January
2015 allowed banks to act as brokers for insurers, set up their own
subsidiaries and also undertake referral services for multiple companies. The
banks have also been allowed to set up subsidiaries and joint venture companies
for undertaking insurance business with risk participation, it said. They can
also act as corporate agents without seeking prior approval from the RBI.
However, they will have to comply with IRDA guidelines. The new guidelines
allow banks to act as brokers permitting them to sell insurance policies of
different insurance companies.
7) Mizoram
lifted 17-year-old liquor ban: Mizoram on 15 Jan 2015 lifted the
17-year-old ban on consumption of liquor in the state nevertheless with strict
punishment for drunken driving and brawls in public places. The state
government enacted Mizoram Liquor Prohibition and Control Act (MLPC), 2014
coming into force replacing the stringent Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition Act
of 1995, Commissioner of Excise and Narcotics L Hmunsanga said. The new
legislation legalizes consumption of liquor for the first time since last 17
years in the state.
8) Microsoft
suspended support for Windows-7: Microsoft on 15 January 2015 suspended
"mainstream support" of its popular Windows 7, meaning neither new
features nor free help will be given to Windows 7 users. The company will
continue to patch security vulnerabilities until 2020. The general availability
of Windows 7 was made on 22 October 2009. It was intended to address criticisms
faced by its predecessor, Windows Vista.
9) Army
Day observed on 15 January: The 67th Army Day was observed on 15 January
2015. The day was celebrated in recognition of the appointment of General K M
Cariappa as the first Commander-in-Chief of independent India. He succeeded
British Army General Roy Butcher on this day in 1948.

1) Brahma
to be new Chief Election Commissioner of India: H.S. Brahma, the seniormost
Election Commissioner, will succeed V.S. Sampath as the next Chief Election
Commissioner of India. Mr. Sampath will demit office on 15 January 2015 after
turning 65. Mr. Brahma, who hails from Assam, is also an IAS officer from the
1975 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre. Like Mr. Sampath, he too held the post
of Power Secretary before being appointed Election Commissioner in August 2010.
He will hold office for only a very short period, until he turns 65 on April 19
this year.

local court in Rampur district of Uttar Pradesh has sentenced Union Minister of

chief AP Singh resigned as UPSC member: Former CBI director AP Singh — who
has been in and out of controversies in recent months — has quit as member of
the Union Public Service Commission two years ahead of the end of his term.
Sources said Singh’s resignation had been accepted and a formal notification

Delhi-based meat exporter Moin Qureshi who has been under investigation by the

Daily Current Affairs: 13 January 2015
1) DRDO
Chief Avinash Chander sacked: Government on 13 January 2015 removed Chief
of top defence research organisation Avinash Chander, 15 months before his
contract was to end. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi "approved the termination" of the contract of
Avinash Chander with effect from January 31, an official notification said.
Interestingly, Chander who was Secretary, Defence Research and Development cum
Director General, DRDO and Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister, had
retired on November 30 last on attaining 64 years of age and he was given a
contract for 18 months till May 31 next year. Chander is the chief architect of
Agni series of ballistic missile systems.

Mars Orbiter Mission team eins Space Pioneer Award: India’s Mars Orbiter
programme team has won the 2015 Space Pioneer Award in the science and
engineering category from the US based National Space Society (NSS), the
society said. This award will be presented to an ISRO representative during the
National Space Society’s 2015 International Space Development Conference, the
34th ISDC, to be held in Toronto, Canada,” the statement said.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off first CNG-based train in Haryana:
Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off the first CNG (Compressed
Natural Gas) based two trains from Haryana's Rewari station. These trains based
on the dual fuel system - diesel and CNG - will reduce greenhouse gas emission
and also the consumption of diesel. Prabhu launched the trains on Rewari-Rohtak
and Rewari to Bikaner section.
4) Arvind
Panagariya took charge as Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog: Noted economist
Arvind Panagariya on 13 January 2015 took charge as the first vice-chairman of
the newly-created NITI Aayog. NITI Aayog has replaced the 65-year old Planning
Commission. The government had notified the Cabinet resolution (on January 7)
regarding the constitution of the National Institution for Transforming India
(NITI) Aayog which was approved by the Prime Minister on January 1.
5) Google
launched its flight search tool in India: Google has finally launched its
flight search tool in India, a move that has been feared by online travel
aggregators for some time. The tool allows users to find and compare airfares
online and book tickets directly on an airline portal or through a partner
aggregator. The new feature from the search giant cuts out online travel
aggregators, who provide flight information and take a cut on the tickets they
sell. Google's presence in the space could reduce traffic to their portals.

Marshal Anil Khosla took charge as Director General Air Operations: Air
Marshal Anil Khosla took over as Director General Air Operations at the Air
Headquarters on 13 January 2015. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, he
was commissioned in the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force in December
1979. He has over 4000 hours of flying experience having flown the Jaguar and
MiG 21. He is equally experienced on both ground attack and air defence roles
with specialization on maritime role.

Minister Uma Bharti inagurated India Water Week 2015: Union Minister for
Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Sushri Uma Bharti
inaugurated the India Water Week – 2015. The theme of five day water week is
“Water Management for Sustainable Development". India Water Week-2015 will
address the issues of sustainability of water resources development and
management in line with Sustainable Development Goals 2015 being finalized by
UN.
8) Burning
of cow dung cakes near Taj Mahal banned: Amid concerns over Taj Mahal
turning yellow due to increasing pollution, the district administration has
banned burning of cow dung cakes in the city while use of coal by small units
will also be prohibited soon.
9) Ringo
mobile app makes international calls cheaper: Ringo, an international
calling app which provides low cost calling without the use of the Internet,
has commenced operations in India offering international calls at 70 per cent
cheaper than most mobile telephone service providers and 20 per cent cheaper
than calls made on Skype and Viber through the Internet for most destinations.
This service is already available in 16 countries including the US, UK, Australia,
Hong Kong and Singapore. Ringo is available for free download on apple
Appstore, Google Playstore and Window phone app store. Subscribers need to
recharge a minimum of Rs 31 or a maximum of Rs 315 to make calls using the app.
