21 January 2015 Daily Current Affairs

1) PM to unveil Sukanya Samriddhi accounts to incentivise girl child: Special deposit scheme — Sukanya Samriddhi Account for girl children scheme will be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22 January 2015. The scheme will get 9.1 per cent interest in the current fiscal. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced the scheme in his budget speech. Accounts in name of girl child can be opened in banks and post offices, and half of the fund can be withdrawn for her higher education and marriage after she attains 18 years of age. Under the scheme, an account can be opened in the name of a girl child of up to 10-year-old. The scheme would mature on completion of 21 years from the date of opening of the account. Deposits can be made till completion of 14 years of the girl. 

2) Parliament session to begin on Feb 23, Union budget on Feb 28: The first full-year budget of the Modi government, which is expected to reflect its reforms-oriented and business-friendly rhetoric, will be presented on February 28, five days after the budget session of Parliament begins on February 23. The dates were decided on 21 January 2015 by the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs that met under the chairmanship of Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.

3) Bibek Debroy joined as full time member of NITI Aayog: Noted economist Bibek Debroy on 21 January 2015 assumed charged as full time member of the NITI Ayog (National Institution for Transforming India). Government had announced the appointment of Debroy and DRDO chief V K Saraswat as full-time members earlier this month.

4) Union Government launched HRIDAY scheme: The Union Ministry of Urban Development on 21 January 2015 launched the National Heritage Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) that seeks to preserve and rejuvenate the rich cultural heritage of the country.

5) Posco, SAIL to set up R18K-cr integrated plant in Jharkhand: South Korean steel major Posco and state-run SAIL would jointly set up a 3-million-tonne integrated plant in Jharkhand with an estimated investment of about Rs 18,000 crore. Posco’s global CEO Kwon Oh-Joon, India CMD Gee Woong Sung and South Korea’s Ambassador to India Joon-gyu Lee met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20 January 2015 and is learnt to have briefed him about the company’s investment plans in Jharkhand.

6) Jaipur Literature Festival began: Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF), believed to be Asia’ biggest literary event, was kicked-off from 21 January 2015 at Jaipur. The 5-day event is the 8th edition of the festival which draws authors, poets and celebrities from all over the world.


7) Toyota topped global vehicle sales: Toyota Motor stayed at the top in global vehicle sales in 2014, selling 10.23 million vehicles, beating Volkswagen and General Motors. Volkswagen AG of Germany sold 10.14 million vehicles in 2014 while the Detroit-based General Motors was third at 9.92 million vehicles, a company record .

1) Periyar tiger reserve won NTCA award: The Periyar Tiger Reserve, spread over 925 sq.km. in Kerala, bagged the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) biennial award on 20 January 2015 for encouraging local public participation in managing the reserve. There are 75 communities living around the reserve, including tribal people who are dependent on eco-development programmes, said field director of the reserve Amit Mallick.

2) Jan Dhan Yojana featured in Guinness Book of World Records with 11.5 cr bank accounts: Banks have opened 11.50 crore accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana, much higher than the targeted 10 crore, and these accounts would be used to pass on benefits of various social security schemes to the account holders, finance minister Arun Jaitley said. Financial services secretary Hasmukh Adhia said even Guinness Book of World Records has recognised the achievements made under the scheme. The Guinness Book said: “Most bank accounts opened in one week as part of the Financial Inclusion Campaign is 18,096,130 and was achieved by the Government of India from August 23 to 29, 2014.”

3) TCS ends RIL's 23-year run as most profitable firm: After 23 years, India has a new numero uno when it comes to net profit. Information technology major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) posted a net profit of Rs 5,328 crore for the quarter ended December, overtaking long-standing champion Reliance Industries Ltd. 

4) Twitter acquired Indian startup ZipDial: Microblogging site Twitter has acquired Indian startup ZipDial, a mobile value added services company based out of Bangalore, a statement by Twitter said. The statement added this is Twitter’s first ever acquisition in India. However, the deal size has not been mentioned. ZipDial has built a mobile platform that lets people follow and engage with content across all interfaces. The user experience combines SMS, voice, mobile web, and access to mobile apps to bridge users from offline to online.

5) European Union lifted ban on import of mangoes from India: The seven-month ban on Indian mangoes, imposed last year by the European Union, has been lifted well in advance of the deadline set for the ban, which was originally till December 2015. EU had imposed this ban on 1 May 2014.

6) India's tiger population increased by 30% in past three years: The population of tigers has increased in India from 1,706 in 2011 to 2,226 in 2014. The new tiger census, released by Union environment minister Prakash Javadekar, shows that India — which has 70% of the world tiger population — has registered an increase of 30 per cent in country's tiger population in the past three years. The latest tiger census figures show that Karnataka has the highest number of tigers in the age group of 1.5 years and more.

7) India ranked 78th globally in Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTCI): Indicating acute shortage of skilled workforce, India has been ranked 78th globally in terms of talent competitiveness of its human capital, while Switzerland has topped the charts. In the list of 93 countries -- compiled by INSEAD business school in partnership with Adecco and Human Capital Leadership Institute of Singapore (HCLI) -- Switzerland is followed by Singapore, Luxembourg, Denmark, United States and Canada in the top five.

8) World Toilet Summit held in New Delhi: The 14th edition of the World Toilet Summit was recently held in the country’s capital. It has added an impetus to the government’s quest for making the country clean and hygienic.

1. SDR (Special Drawing Rights): SDR are new form of International reserve assets, created by the International Monetary Fund in 1967. The value of SDR is based on the portfolio of widely used countries and they are maintained as accounting entries and not as hard currency or physical assets like Gold.

2. NEFT (National Electronic Fund Transfer): NEFT enables funds transfer from one bank to another but works a bit differently than RTGS. NEFT is slower than RTGS. The transfer is not direct and RBI acts as the service provider to transfer the money from one account to another. You can transfer any amount through NEFT, even a rupee. Minimum limit: No Minimum limit, Maximum Limit: No maximum limit.

3. RTGS (Real time gross settlement): RTGS system is funds transfer systems where transfer of money or securities takes place from one bank to another on a "real time" and on "gross" basis. Settlement in "real time" means payment transaction is not subjected to any waiting period. The transactions are settled as soon as they are processed. Minimum & Maximum Limit of RTGS: 2 lakh and no upper limit.

4. CRAR(Capital to Risk Weighted Assets Ratio) or CAR(Capital Adequacy Ratio): Capital to risk weighted assets ratio is arrived at by dividing the capital of the bank with aggregated risk weighted assets for credit risk, market risk and operational risk.

5. Non Performing Assets (NPA): An asset, including a leased asset, becomes non performing when it ceases to generate income for the bank.The Duration of NPA declaration is of 90 days.

6. Participatory Notes : are derivative instruments, used by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) who are NOT registered with SEBI. These are mostly used by overseas HNIs (High Net worth Individuals), hedge funds and other foreign institutions, allow them to invest in Indian markets through registered Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), while saving on time and costs associated with direct registrations. 7. IFSC: IFSC code means Indian Financial System Code. RTGS and NEFT payment system of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) use these codes. IFSC code consists of 11 Characters identified as under (Lets take an example of SBI, Madhapur Hyderabad):- First 4 digits show the Identity of the bank. i.e. SBIN 5th digits in default as ZERO (for future use) i.e. 0 Last 6 Characters display the Branch Identity. i.e. 004187 So IFSC Code is SBIN004187

8. MICR:MICR code means Magnetic Ink Character Recognition code which contains 9 digits, like 380002006 appearing at the bottom of the cheque, following the cheque number. Each Bank Branch has a unique MICR code. First 3 digits:-City PIN Code + Next 3 digits :Bank Code +Last 3 Digits-Branch Code

9. CTS (CHEQUE TRUNCATION SYSTEM) is basically an online image-based cheque clearing system where cheque images and Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) data are captured at the collecting bank branch and transmitted electronically. Truncation means, stopping the flow of the physical cheques issued by a drawer to the drawee branch.

10. Core Banking Solution (CBS) :-Core Banking Solution (CBS) is networking of branches, which enables Customers to operate their accounts, and avail banking services from any branch of the Bank on CBS network, regardless of where he maintains his account.

11. Commercial Paper: Commercial Paper (CP) is an unsecured money market instrument issued in the form of a promissory note. Corporate, primary dealers (PDs) and the All India Financial Institutions (FIs) are eligible to issue CP. Maturity period: between a minimum of 7 days and a maximum of up to one year from the date of issue. CP can be issued in denominations of Rs.5 lakh or multiples thereof. Only a scheduled bank can act as an IPA (Issuing and Paying Agent) for issuance of CP.

12. Treasury Bills: Treasury bills (T bills) offer short term investment opportunities. They are thus useful in managing short term liquidity. At present, the Government of India issues three types of treasury bills through auctions, namely, 91 day, 182 day and 364 day. There are no treasury bills issued by State Governments. Treasury bills are available for a minimum amount of Rs.25,000 and in multiples of Rs. 25,000. Treasury bills are issued at a discount and are redeemed at par.

13. Certificates of Deposit (CD): Certificate of Deposit (CD) is a negotiable money market instrument and issued in dematerialised form or as a Usance Promissory Note against funds deposited at a bank or other eligible financial institution for a specified time period.
Note: CDs can be issued by (i) scheduled commercial banks{excluding Regional Rural Banks and Local Area Banks}; and (ii) select All ]India Financial Institutions (FIs) that have been permitted by RBI Minimum amount of a CD should be Rs.1 lakh, and in multiples of Rs. 1 lakh thereafter. The maturity period of CDs issued by banks should not be less than 7 days and not more than one year, from the date of issue.

14. Bank Rate: The interest rate at which at central bank lends money to commercial banks. Often these loans are very short in duration. Managing the bank rate is a preferred method by which central banks can regulate the level of economic activity. Lower bank rates can help to expand the economy, when unemployment is high, by lowering the cost of funds for borrowers. Conversely, higher bank rates help to reign in the economy, when inflation is higher than desired.

15. Repo Rate: Whenever the banks have any shortage of funds they can borrow it form RBI. Repo rate is the rate at which commercial banks borrows rupees from RBI. A reduction in the repo rate will help banks to get money at cheaper rate. When the repo rate increases borrowing form RBI becomes more expensive.

16. Reverse Repo Rate: Reverse Repo rate is the rate at which RBI borrows money from commercial banks. Banks are always happy to lend money to RBI since their money is in the safe hands with a good interest. An increase in reverse repo rate can cause the banks to transfer more funds to RBI due to this attractive interest rates. One factor which encourages an organisation to enter into reverse repo is that it earns some extra income on its otherwise idle cash.

17. CRR (Cash Reverse Ratio): CRR is the amount of funds that the banks have to keep with RBI. If RBI increases CRR, the available amount with the banks comes down. RBI is using this method (increase of CRR), to drain out the excessive money from the banks.

18. SLR (Statutory Liquidity Ratio): SLR is the amount a commercial banks needs to maintain in the form of cash, or gold, or govt. approved securities (Bonds) before providing credit to its customers. SLR rate is determined and maintained by RBI in order to control the expansion of the bank credit.


19. Marginal Standing Facility (MSF): MSF rate is the rate at which banks borrow funds overnight from the Reserve Bank of India against approved government securities.

1) Filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani appointed new censor board chief: Filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani was on 19 January 2015 appointed chairperson of the censor board, days after Leela Samson resigned as its chief alleging interference by the government in its matters. The government also reconstituted the board appointing nine others as members including BJP leader Vani Tripathi Tikoo and filmmakers Ashoke Pandit and Chandra Prakash Dwivedi. An official statement said that Nihalani was appointed as chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in an honorary capacity for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

2) Eminent political scientist, theorist Rajni Kothari passed away: Eminent political scientist and theorist Rajni Kothari passed away on 19 January 2015. Kothari was the founder of Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) in 1963, a social sciences and humanities research institute, based in Delhi and Lokayan (Dialogue of the People), started in 1980 as a forum for interaction between activists and intellectuals.  Kothari was member of the Planning Commission during the National Front government led by V P Singh.

3) Indian-American Frank Islam received Martin Luther award: An eminent Indian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist, Frank Islam, has been presented with the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr Award, in recognition of his contribution to the legacy of the great leader, through his efforts in international service and civil engagement. The award, which carries the name of Martin Luther King Jr, an apostle of peace, is about building bridges between humanity.

4) Ex-Minister Krishna Tirath joined BJP: Former UPA Cabinet minister and Congress leader Krishna Tirath joined BJP on 19 January 2015, in a move that may help the party gain support of dalits in the coming assembly elections. Krishna Tirath, who served as women child and development minister in the UPA Cabinet, met BJP chief Amit Shah and joined the party.

5) ICICI Bank customers can use Twitter to transfer money: ICICI Bank, India’s largest private sector bank, on 19 January 2015 announced the launch of banking services on Twitter, the first of its kind service, in India. Christened, ‘icicibankpay’, enables ICICI Bank customers to transfer money to anyone in the country who has a Twitter account, check account balance, view last three transactions and recharge prepaid mobile “in a completely secure manner”. For fund transfer, the sender needs to know the beneficiary's Twitter handle. The sender will get an SMS with a unique code after the transfer; the beneficiary would need to enter it on the special webpage where he/she would be directed, to complete the transaction. ICICI Bank claimed it is the first in Asia and only second in the world to offer a Twitter-based fund transfer service.

6) RBI asked banks to review minimum lending rate every quarter: The Reserve Bank of India, on 19 January 2015, asked banks to notify the Base Rate, or the minimum lending rate, at least once in every three months based on the cost of funds, a move seen as a nudge to lenders to pass on the changes in the policy rate to borrowers. The direction comes soon after the RBI cut the repo rate by 0.25 percentage point, the first reduction in 20 months, to boost credit and economic growth. The new guidelines will come into effect from February 19.

7) Kiran Bedi to be BJP's CM candidate in Delhi: BJP on 19 January 2015 announced that former IPS officer Kiran Bedi will be its chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming elections in Delhi. Addressing a news conference after the party's central election committee meet, BJP president Amit Shah said, "BJP's parliamentary board has decided that the party will contest Delhi elections under the leadership of Kiran Bedi. She will also be our CM candidate."
