1) Saudi
Arabia King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz died: Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah died
on 23 January 2015 and his brother Salman became king, the royal court in the
world's top oil exporter and birthplace of Islam said in a statement carried by
state television. King Salman has named his half-brother Muqrin as his crown
prince and heir. Abdullah, thought to have been born in 1923, had ruled Saudi
Arabia as king since 2006.

remembered Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary: 23 January
is the birth anniversary of veteran freedom fighter and the great son of India.
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who lived for the country and ultimately laid his
life in the struggle to free India from the Colonial rule. Prime Minister
Narendra Modi has paid tributes to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, on his birth
anniversary. He founded Indian National
Army (Azad Hind Fauj) to overthrow British Empire from India and came to acquire
legendary status among Indian masses. Subhas Chandra Bose was born on January
23, 1897 at Oriya bazaar of Cuttack district Orissa. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose
is remembered for his Salutation and slogan of 'Jai Hind'. The famous words of
Subash Chandra Bose "Give me blood, I will give you freedom"
encouraged the freedom fighters.

comedian M.S. Narayana passed away: Actor and comedian M.S. Narayana, a
veteran with over 750 films to his credit, passed away at on 23 January 2015.
He was 63. He is survived by daughter Sasikiran and son Vikram. Born in
Nidamarru village near Bhimavaram in West Godavari District on April 16, 1951,
Mylavarapu Surya Narayana dabbled in theatre initially while working as a
lecturer and entered the film industry as a writer before being introduced as
an actor.

directed banks to display loan rates on their websites: The Reserve Bank of
India (RBI) on 23 January 2015 has asked commercial banks to display loan
interest rates on their websites, a move aimed at enhancing transparency for
borrowers. The RBI has also insisted that banks should also mention on websites
the total fees and charges applicable on various types of loans to individual
borrowers. This should facilitate borrowers taking informed decision to buy bank
loans.

Bombay developed ‘world’s cheapest’ netbook: IIT Bombay has developed a
10-inch netbook, which it claims could be the world's cheapest, at around Rs
6,000. The netbook, conceived during the institute's work with the low-cost
Akash tablet, will be unveiled in the second week of February.

Wan Koo named new South Korean Prime Minister: South Korean President Park
Geun-hye has nominated ruling party lawmaker Lee Wan Koo to replace Prime
Minister Chung Hong-won nearly 10 months after Chung offered to resign over a
ferry disaster that killed more than 300 people in April last year.

impeached former PM Yingluck Shinawatra: Thailand’s military-appointed
legislature has voted to impeach former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. She
was impeached for her role in overseeing a government rice subsidy program that
lost billions of dollars. More than three-fifths i.e. 190 legislatures voted
against Yingluck in the legislature of 220 members. It should be noted that,
for this impeachment more than three-fifths votes of the legislatures was
required.

named on panel to review UN Peace-Building architecture: An eminent Indian
academician is among seven experts nominated by UN chief Ban Ki-moon to be part
of an advisory group that will conduct a policy and institutional review of the
world body's peace- building architecture and make recommendations. Saraswathi
Menon, former Director of the Policy Division in UN Women, will be among the
members of the Advisory Group to review peace building architecture.

Federer beaten at Australian Open by Andreas Seppi: Four-time champion
Roger Federer is out of the Australian Open after being beaten in the third
round by unheralded Italian Andreas Seppi. The 33-year-old Swiss second seed
went down 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 7-6 (7-5) to Seppi, who is ranked 46 in the world.
Seppi, 30, had never beaten the 17-time Grand Slam champion in 10 previous
meetings and his win ends a 23-match losing streak against top 10 opponents.

1) BSE
Sensex hits record high, crossed 29000 mark: The BSE Sensex scaled the historical 29,000
peak for the first time on 22 January. Barring oil & gas, infrastructure
and consumer durables, all other BSE sectoral indices ended in the green. Among
them, healthcare index gained the most by 1.69 per cent, followed by capital
goods 1.12 per cent and auto 0.72 per cent. On the other hand, consumer
durables index was down 0.96 per cent, oil & gas 0.77 per cent and
infrastructure 0.27 per cent.
2) Jhumpa
Lahiri's 'The Lowland' won 2015 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature: The
DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2015 was awarded to Jhumpa Lahiri's The
Lowland at the Zee Jaipur Literature Festival on Thursday evening. The prize
shortlist included Kamila Shamsie's A God for Every Stone (Bloomsbury), Romesh
Gunesekera's Noontide Toll (Hamish Hamilton/Penguin), Bilal Tanweer's The
Scatter Here is Too Great (Vintage Books/Random House) and Shamsur Rahman
Faruqi's The Mirror of Beauty (Penguin Books). DSC Prize for South Asian
Literature is awarded annually to writers of any ethnicity or nationality
writing about South Asia such as culture, politics, history, or people. It was
instituted in 2011.

Modi launched 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign: Exhorting people not to
regress to 18th century mindset PM Narendra Modi made an emotional pitch to end
discrimination against the girl child on 22 January 2015. Modi launched twin
programmes of "Beti bachao, beti padhao"(Save the Daughter, Teach the
Daughter) and "Sukanya Samriddhi
account" in a bid to encourage birth and education of girls and tackle the
abysmally low child sex ratio of 918 girls for 1000 boys. PM launched the two
schemes from Panipat in Haryana that has among the lowest child sex ratio in
the country (837 girls to 1000 boys). He also launched Sukanya Samridhi Yojna
(girl child prosperity scheme), under which girl children below 10 years will
have accounts with more interest and income tax benefits.
4) Vodafone
named Sunil Sood as India CEO: UK's telecom giant Vodafone on 22 January
2015 appointed the first Indian CEO, Sunil Sood, for its India operations to
replace Martin Pieters who has been its chief executive since 2009. Pieters,
the longest serving chief executive officer of a telecom firm in the country,
will step down from April 1 and will be succeeded by Sood, presently COO of the
company.
5) Supreme
Court barred N Srinivasan from contesting BCCI elections: The Supreme Court
on 22 January 2015 barred former BCCI chief N Srinivasan from contesting BCCI
elections citing a conflict of interest. While the apex court gave him a clean
chit on charges of covering up a betting scandal that has plagued the Indian
Premier League (IPL), it asked him to choose between the BCCI President's post
and owing the Chennai Super Kings team in the IPL. The court has directed the
BCCI to conduct elections within 6 weeks of the order.
6) High
Level Committee for Restructuring of FCI submitted report to PM: The High
Level Committee for Restructuring of Food Corporation of India, on 22 January
2015 submitted its report to the Prime Minister. The Committee was chaired by
Shri Shanta Kumar. The Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public
Distribution, Shri Ram Vilas Paswan, was present on the occasion. The Committee
was required to examine the present day administrative, functional and
financial structure of FCI and modus operandi of its various operations, and
suggest a model for restructuring FCI to improve its operational efficiency and
financial management, and suggest measures for overall improvement in
management of foodgrains by FCI.

Kaptan Singh Solanki sworn-in as 34th Governor of Punjab: Haryana governor
Prof Kaptan Singh Solani was on 22 January 2015 took over the additional charge
of Governor of Punjab. Solanki was given the additional charge after the tenure
of Shivraj V Patil as Punjab governor come to an end.

Narendra Modi, Barack Obama to jointly address nation over radio broadcast
'Mann ki Baat': The monthly 'Mann ki Baat' radio broadcast of Prime
Minister Narendra Modi this time will be special as he will be joined by US
President Barack Obama. The programme will be aired on January 27, the Prime
Minister revealed himself on 22 January 2015 through a series of tweets and asked
for questions from the public.
