1) Shashi Kapoor awarded Dada Saheb Phalke Award:
--> Veteran actor-filmmaker Shashi Kapoor was presented the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award on 10 May 2015 by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley at Prithvi theatre here in a star studded event.
--> The I&B Minister called Shashi Kapoor as the most versatile personality of Bollywood and thanked him for his contribution to Indian cinema.
--> He is the 46th recipient of Dada Saheb Phalke Award to receive this honour for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development to Indian Cinema.
--> The veteran actor was unable to attend the award ceremony in Delhi due to his ill-health, therefore he was handed over the award at a function at Prithvi Theatre in suburban Mumbai.

2) Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated Namaste Russia:
--> President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated Namaste Russia, a festival of Indian culture, in Moscow on 9 May 2015 on the last leg of his tour to Russia.
--> Inaugurating the festival, the President said, it is cultural bonds that build solid bridges of friendship and understanding between peoples and countries.

3) PM Modi inaugurated IISCO plant at Burnpur:
--> Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated IISCO's steel plant at Burnpur in West Bengal on 10 May 2015.
--> The plant has been modernised at a cost of Rs. 16,000 crore and production capacity will go up from 0.85 mtpa to 2.9 mtpa.
--> The modernized facility will have the largest blast furnace.

4) Congress leader KV Thomas renominated PAC chairman:
--> Outgoing chairman of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee, senior Congress leader K V Thomas, has been renominated to the post for a second term.
--> PAC is one of the most important finance committees along with the Committee on Estimates and the Committee on Public Undertakings.
--> Since 1967, the post of the PAC Chairman has been held by a senior member of the main Opposition party.
--> The key committee examines CAG reports after they are tabled in Parliament.
--> The PAC, constituted every year, may consist of not more than 22 members -- 15 from Lok Sabha and not more than seven members from Rajya Sabha.

5) Nico Rosberg won Spanish Grand Prix 2015:
--> Nico Rosberg of Germany won the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix on 10 May 2015.
--> Nico Rosberg had started the race from pole position and by winning the race has finally got the better of his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton who is leading this season.
-->  This was first victory for Rosberg since winning the Brazilian GP in November 2014 and the ninth overall of his Formula 1 career.
--> Sebastian Vettel finished third.

--> HDFC has emerged as the only Indian company among the world's 10 biggest consumer financial services firms, after giants like American Express, Visa and Mastercard.
--> HDFC is ranked 7th on the list, compiled by business magazine Forbes, where American Express is placed on the top, followed by Capital One Financial, Visa, Discover Financial Services and Orix in the top-five. Mastercard is ranked sixth.

1) PM Narendra Modi launched 3 social security schemes:
--> Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9 May 2015 announced three flagship social security schemes, including an insurance cover for less than Re 1 per day.
--> Three schemes intend to widen the process of financial inclusion in the country include:
i) Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Yojana (PMJJBY).
ii) Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY).
iii) Atal Pension Yojana (APY).
--> The Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana will offer a renewable one-year life cover of Rs 2 lakh to all savings bank account holders in the age group of 18-50 years, covering death due to any reason, for a premium of Rs 330 per annum.
--> The Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana will offer a renewable one-year accidental death-cum-disability cover of Rs 2 lakh for partial/permanent disability to all savings bank account holders in the age group of 18-70 years for a premium of Rs 12 per annum per subscriber.
--> Atal Pension Yojana will focus on the unorganised sector and provide subscribers a fixed minimum pension of Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000, Rs 3,000, Rs 4,000 or Rs 5,000 per month, starting at the age of 60 years, depending on the contribution option exercised on entering at an age between 18 and 40 years.

2) Advanced version of BrahMos missile successfully test-fired:
--> An advanced version of the BrahMos land-attack cruise missile was successfully test-fired on 9 May 2015 from the Car Nicobar Islands.
--> This is the 48th test firing of the missile.
--> This test met all flight parameters, including high-level manoeuvers.
--> The BrahMos missile has been jointly developed by India and Russia. 

3) Indian Navy commissioned Porbandar base INS Sardar Patel:
--> INS Sardar Patel--was on 9 May 2015 commissioned in Porbandar, which Navy chief RK Dhowan said will help boost security of Gujarat's 1600-km coastline.
--> The base was commissioned by Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel.
--> The newly commissioned naval base is christened after India’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Patel.
--> It is second naval base of Indian Navy on Gujarat coast, the first one is INS Dwarka at Okha in Dwarka district.

4) Russia celebrated victory day:
--> Victory Day is Russia's most important secular holiday, both commemorating the Soviet Union's huge suffering in the war and highlighting Russia's portrayal of itself as a force for peace and security.
--> Apart from Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Pranab Mukherjee, prominent leaders attending Russia’s Victory Day celebrations included Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev and Egyptian President Abdel Fateh Al- Sisi.

5) WHO declared Liberia Free of Ebola:
--> The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Liberia free of the Ebola virus, confirming that the country has had no new cases in 42 days.
--> More than 4,700 deaths from Ebola have been recorded in Liberia, more than in any other affected country.
--> Neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone continue to fight the outbreak.
--> The WHO regards a country Ebola-free after a 42-day period without a new case - twice the maximum incubation period.

1) Achal Kumar Jyoti appointed as Election Commissioner:
--> Achal Kumar Jyoti, a former Chief Secretary during the tenure of Narendra Modi as Gujarat Chief Minister, was on 7 May 2015 appointed as the Election Commissioner, filling one of the two vacancies in the three-member body.
--> His tenure as Election Commissioner will commence from the day he assumes charge, a Law Ministry notification said.
--> Jyoti will have a tenure of nearly three years, when he will turn 65, the age at which ECs demit office under the Constitution.
--> An EC or a CEC has a tenure of six years in office or till he or she attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
--> After V S Sampath demitted office in January, H S Brahma was elevated as CEC. But after Brahma demitted office, two posts of ECs in the three-member body have remained vacant.

2) Myntra acquired Bengaluru-based Native5:
--> Myntra, an e-commerce portal for fashion and lifestyle products, has acquired Bengaluru-based mobile app development platform company, Native5.

--> The Reserve Bank-promoted body, whose inter-bank network, the National Financial Switch (NFS), witnesses the largest transaction volume, has reduced the charges to 45 paise on an increase in volumes and efficiency, the Corporation said.
--> The NFS has over 400 member banks and connects over 1.92 lakh ATMs.
--> The switching fee is charged to issuing banks for approved transactions.

6) Norway, Philippines Ambassadors killed in chopper crash in Pakistan:
--> Envoys of the Philippines and Norway and the wives of the Malaysian and Indonesian ambassadors were among seven persons killed when a Pakistani military helicopter crashed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on 8 May 2015.
--> The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed it had downed the chopper with an anti-aircraft missile.
--> The Pakistan Army, however, ruled out the possibility of any terrorist activity in the crash and said the chopper had crashed due to a technical fault while landing.
