Hi Aspirants...On the eve of Republic Day,
the government announced the list of recipients of this year’s Padma awards
2016. The awardees include Bollywood actors, media personalities, former
politicians, public officials and sportspersons who have made the country
proud.
* Actor Rajinikanth, media baron Ramoji
Rao, former J-K governor Jagmohan and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will
be awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award bestowed by
India. It will also be awarded posthumously to Dhirubhai Ambani, who founded
Reliance Industries.
* This year, the Padma Bhushan will go to
former CAG Vinod Rai, Bollywood actor Anupam Kher and singer Udit Narayan. It
will also go to former US Ambassador to India Robert D Blackwill, sportspersons
Saina Nehwal and Sania Mirza, and Indu Jain of Bennett, Coleman & Co.
* Senior lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, actors Ajay
Devgn and Priyanka Chopra are on the list of Padma Shri awardees, along with
director SS Rajamouli (of Bahubali fame) and Bhojpuri singer Malini Awasthi.
* Padma Awards - one of the highest
civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely,
Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various
disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs,
science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and
education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for
exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished
service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field.
The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
* These awards are conferred by the
President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan
usually around March/ April every year. This year the President of India has
approved conferment of Padma Awards to 112 persons as per the list below. The
list comprises of 10 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan and 83 Padma Shri
Awardees. 19 of the awardees are women
and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of foreigners, NRIs,
PIOs (include one posthumous) and 4 Posthumous awardees.

1) Atulesh Jindal appointed
new CBDT chief:
--> Atulesh Jindal was on 21 January
2016 appointed Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex
policy making body of Income Tax department.
--> He will succeed A K Jain, who
completes his term this month-end.
--> Appointments Committee of the
Cabinet has approved the appointment of Jindal as Chairman CBDT, an order
issued by Department of Personnel and Training said.
--> Jindal, a 1978 batch Indian Revenue
Service ( IRS) officer, is currently working as Member (Revenue) in the CBDT.
2) 4th India Africa
Hydrocarbons Conference begins in New Delhi:
--> The fourth edition of India Africa
Hydrocarbons Conference (IAHC) has begun on January 21, 2016 in New Delhi.
3) BEPS guidelines of OECD to
be implemented in India from 1 April 2016:
--> India will change laws in the
upcoming budget to make country-by-country reporting mandatory for Indian
multinationals to ensure they follow so-called base erosion and profit shifting
(BEPS) guidelines.
--> These norms will have to be followed
by Indian companies from the financial year that begins on 1 April 2016.
4) RBI asks banks to extend
loans to women SHGs at 7% rate:
--> RBI asked banks to provide loans up
to Rs 3 lakh at 7 per cent interest rate to Women Self-Help Group (SHG) under
the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM)-Aajeevika scheme during 2015-16.
--> The commercial banks and cooperative
banks will lend to all the women SHGs in rural areas at the rate of 7 per cent
in the 150 districts, it said.
5) Jodhpur's Umaid Bhawan
Palace named the world's best hotel of 2016:
--> Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur,
Rajasthan, on 21 January 2016 won the award of the world's best hotel at the
Travellers' Choice award organised by TripAdvisor.

--> Moldovan parliament on 20 January
2016 appointed Pavel Filip as the Prime Minister.

of Moldova in less than a year.

bilateral naval exercise 'Naseem Al Bahr':
--> India and Oman will conduct 10th
edition of bilateral maritime exercise 'Naseem Al Bahr' in the Arabian Sea from
January 22 to January 27, 2016.
--> Naseem Al Bahr epitomises the strong
long term strategic relationship between the two countries.
--> Initiated in 1993, the exercise has
matured over the years with increasing scope, complexity of operations and
level of participation," said a Ministry of Defence.
8) Amitabh Bachchan And
Priyanka Chopra: New Face Of Incredible India:
--> Actors Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka
Chopra will replace Aamir Khan as new ambassadors of the Incredible India
campaign to market the country to tourists abroad.
--> Bollywood veteran Mr Bachchan, 73,
the brand ambassador of Gujarat Tourism, had been picked for the position some
time ago. His name was reportedly suggested by the Prime Minister's office.
