1) Saina Nehwal settles for silver at World Badminton
Championship:
--> Saina Nehwal's quest to become the
first Indian world champion in badminton ended in heartbreak as she lost in
straight games to title holder Carolina Marin in the summit showdown of the
mega-event in Jakarta on 16 August 2015.
--> The world number two Indian went
down 16-21 19-21 to her numero uno nemesis from Spain in a match which lasted
59 minutes.
--> It was the second successive loss in
a major final for Saina even though the silver medal she settled for is the
best performance by an Indian in the showpiece.
--> This was India's fifth medal at the
World Championship after P V Sindhu clinched the bronze twice in 2013 and 2014
and Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa notched up a bronze in women's doubles at
the 2011 edition.
2) Abhishek Verma clinched gold for India at Archery World
Cup:
--> Abhishek Verma gave India a perfect
Independence Day gift by clinching the gold medal in the compound men’s
individual section to open their account in the Archery World Cup Stage 3 on 15
August 2015.
--> World number 18 was at his best in
the individual final as he held on to his lead to wrap up the issue 148-145
against Esmaeil Ebadi of Iran.
3) Kerala declared 'complete digital state':
--> Declaration of Kerala as a 'complete
digital state' and announcement of a new youth programme in memory of former
President, the late APJ Abdul Kalam marked Independence Day celebrations in
Kerala.
--> With the state making remarkable
strides in implementation of various e-governance initiatives, Chief Minister
Oommen Chandy declared Kerala as the 'complete digital state'.
4) Govt launched mission 'Indradhanush' to revamp PSU banks:
--> Finance minister Arun Jaitley on 14
August 2015 launched a seven pronged plan-- Indradhanush--to revamp functioning
of public sector banks.
--> The seven elements include
appointments, board of bureau, capitalisation, de-stressing, empowerment,
framework of accountability and governance reforms.
--> Banks board of bureau will replace
existing appointments board. Its members would be appointed in the next six
months to be headed by the RBI governnor.
--> Banks board bureau would also hold
bad assets of public sector banks.
5) Rahane created record by taking 8 catches:
--> Ajinkya Rahane became the first
fielder in Test history to take eight catches, achieving the feat in the
ongoing first cricket match against Sri Lanka.
--> Rahane caught Rangana Herath at slip
off Amit Mishra to enter the record books after going past five international
players -- Yajurvindra Singh (India), Greg Chappell (Australia), Hashan
Tilakaratne (Sri Lanka), Stephen Flemimg (New Zealand) and Mathew Hayden
(Australia), all of whom took 7 catches in a match.
6) Taj Mahal gets Twitter account:
--> The World famous Taj Mahal has
become the first historical monument to have an official handle on
micro-blogging site Twitter.
--> Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister
Akhilesh Yadav launched the official twitter account of the monument on 15
August 2015.
--> With this Taj Mahal has become the
first historical monument in the world to have its own twitter account.
--> Within an hour of its launch, the
Taj Mahal account got more than 2000 followers.
7) Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his two-day trip to
the UAE:
--> Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 16
August 2015 began his two-day trip to the UAE by visiting the historic Sheikh
Zayed Grand mosque, the world's third largest.
--> After his arrival, PM Modi, on first
public engagement in Abu Dhabi, visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a key
place of worship in the UAE and known as a masterpiece of Islamic architecture.
--> The mosque is third largest in the
world after the ones in Mecca and Madina in Saudi Arabia.
--> It is named after the founder and
first President of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

1) Nation celebrated its 69th Independence Day:
--> India has celebrated its 69th
Independence Day on 15 August 2015.
--> Independence Day has great
significance because it reminds the people of the unity and diversity of India.
--> It is the day when India became free
from the British Rule after 200 years of slavery.
--> PM Narendra Modi addressed the
nation from Delhi's iconic Red Fort.
2) Saina Nehwal entered Final of World Badminton
Championship at Jakarta:
--> Saina Nehwal has became the first
Indian to reach the finals of the World Badminton Championships at Jakarta with
21-17 21-17 win over Indonesia's Lindaweni Fanetri in the semifinals of the
women's singles on 15 August 2015.
--> World No. 2 Saina will now take on
defending champion and World No. 1 Carolina Marin of Spain in the summit clash
on 16 August 2015.
3) Sri Lanka beat India by 63 runs in first test:
--> In an extraordinary twist to the
game, India on 15 August 2015 capitulated to an embarrassing 63-run defeat in
the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka, who scripted one of the most
remarkable turnarounds in recent Test history.
--> Set a tricky victory target of 176,
the listless Indians surrendered tamely to be skittled out for their lowest
score of 112 in just 49.5 over to give the islanders a 1-0 lead in the
three-match series.
--> Left arm spinner Rangana Herath
scalped 7/48 and Tharindu Kaushal took 3/47 as the lankans bamboozled the
Indians to bundle them out in just 41.5 overs.
4) PM meets Iran foreign minister Javad Zarif:
--> In a first ministerial trip to
India, after Iran struck a nuclear deal, its Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif is
now in New Delhi and he called on PM Narendra Modi on 14 August 2015.
5) Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new campaign
‘Start-up India; Stand up India’:
--> On the eve of celebration of 69th
Independence Day at Red Fort Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new
campaign ‘Start-up India; Stand up India’ an initiative to promote bank finance
for Start-ups (an entrepreneurial venture).
--> The campaign was announced with an
aim to boost entrepreneurship among the youth and to create employment in
India.
--> As per the initiative PM urged 1.25
lakh bank branches to provide finance to at least one Dalit or Adivasi and at
least one woman entrepreneur.
6) Anoop, Naval and three others recommended for Dronacharya
Award:
--> Wrestling coach Anoop Singh and
Paralympics coach Naval singh were among the five names recommended for this
year's Dronacharya Award by a selection panel on 14 AUgust 2015.
--> Anoop and Naval were recommended on
the basis of current performance (2011-2014), while Nihar Amin (swimming), S R
Singh (boxing), Harbans Singh (athletics) were considered in the 'Lifetime
Achievement Category' in which achievements over a period of 20 years is taken
into account.
7) Axis Bank launched the First Multi-Currency Contactless
Card service in India:
--> India’s third largest private sector
lender, Axis Bank has launched the first Contactless Debit, Credit and Multi-Currency
Forex Card in association with VISA payWave in the country.
--> Axis Bank will offer a contactless
debit/credit cards to its 1.7 million premium customers which also enables
withdrawal of 15 currencies via Multi-Currency Forex facility.
8) PAHAL scheme entered into Guinness Book of world records:
--> Union Government’s ambitious
Pratyaksha Hastaantarit Laabh (PAHAL) scheme has been acknowledged as the
world’s largest cash transfer program (households) by the Guinness Book of
World Records.
9) Founder of Hero Cycle Om Prakash Munjal passed away:
--> The founder of Hero Cycle and a
leading industrialist Om Prakash Munjal breathed his last in the DMC Hero Heart
Centre, Ludhiana on 13 August.
--> The complete manufacturing of
bicycle was started in 1956 under brand name Hero.
--> This unit became the first bicycle
manufacturing unit in India which produced 639 bicycles in that first year.
10) Veerappa Moily conferred with Saraswati Sammaan 2014:
--> President Pranab Mukherjee has
conferred prestigious literary award Saraswati Sammaan for the year 2014 to Dr.
Marpadi Veerappa Moily in New Delhi.
--> He was bestowed with this award for
his Kannada poem ‘Ramayana Mahanveshanam’ which was first published in 2007.

Independenence on 15th August 2015, Union Government has announced the winners
of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Awards 2015. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2015 was awarded to Sania Mirza. Arjuna Award winners and their discipline will
be surely an expected questions for all upcoming exams. Here are the details of
Arjuna Award 2015.
* Arjuna Awards are given by the Ministry
of Youth Affairs and Sports, government of India to recognize outstanding
achievement in National sports. Instituted in 1961, the award carries a cash
prize of Rs.500,000, a bronze statuette of Arjuna and a scroll.
* Arjuna Award is given for consistently
outstanding performance for four years preceding the year of award.
* A large number of nominations were
received for these awards this year, which were considered by the Selection
Committee headed by Mr. Justice V.K. Bali, former Chief Justice of Kerla High
Court and consisting of eminent sportspersons and sports administrators.
* Based on the recommendations of the
Committee and after due scrutiny, the Government has approved to confer Arjuna

* Sania Mirza's name was officially
approved for the coveted Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, becoming only the
second tennis player to be nominated for the highest sporting honour.
* Sania Mirza, who has won three mixed
doubles Grand Slams in her career, beat competition from squash player Deepika
Pallikal, discus thrower Vikas Gowda, track and field star Tintu Luka, rising
shuttler P V Sindhu, and hockey captain Sardar Singh for the coveted honour.
* “It’s a tremendous honour for me to be
conferred the Khel Ratna award and I feel humbled with the love and respect
showered on me by my country,” Sania told press.
* “Representing my country in all corners
of the world has been my great privilege for so many years and this recognition
of my efforts by the government of India is certain to inspire me to earn more
laurels for our country. I would like to wish all my fellow Indians a happy
independence day,” she said.
* Sania, currently ranked world number one
in women’s doubles, scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a
women’s doubles Grand Slam title when she and Martina Hingis clinched the
Wimbledon trophy earlier this year.
* Sania is only the second tennis player
after Leander Paes to be named for the top award.
* Paes had been bestowed the honour way
back in 1996 after his bronze medal in
the Atlanta Olympics.
* The awards will be conferred by the
President Pranab Mukherjee on August 29, the National Sports Day.
* The Khel Ratna carries a prize money of
Rs. 7.5 lakh along with a citation.
* Sania had won the Arjuna award in 2004
and was the favourite for the top award this year. In 2006, she was bestowed
the Padma Shri — the country’s fourth highest civilian honour.
