Daily Current Affairs: 26 January 2014

1) Nation celebrated 65th Republic Day: India celebrated its 65th Republic anniversary with gusto showcasing the nation's ‘unity in diversity’ and defence capabilities in the presence of its Chief Guest Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan in New Delhi on Sunday. Students and security forces across the country vied with each other to show their prowess.

2) World Leprosy Day observed across the world on January 26th: As per the 2011 statistics, India rank’s number one by contributing about 58.1 per cent of new leprosy cases detected worldwide. India has not succeeded in eliminating this disease despite the introduction of multiple drug therapy (MDT) over three decades ago.

3) PAN allotment process to undergo change from 3 February 2014: PAN (Permanent Account Number) allotment process will undergo a change from 3 February 2014. The official release mentioned that an applicant of PAN will have to submit self-attested copies of Proof of Identity (POI), Proof of Address (POA) and Date of Birth (DOB) documents. The applicant will also have to produce the original documents for verification at the counter of PAN facilitation centres.

4) Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka won Australian Open 2014: Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka claimed his first Grand Slam title in dramatic fashion on Sunday when he upset injury-troubled world number one Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final. . The eighth seed roared through the first two sets and overcame the distraction of a back injury to Nadal, and then the loss of the third set, to take it 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours 21 minutes.

5) Saina Nehwal beats PV Sindhu to win India Grand Prix Gold: India ace shuttler Saina Nehwal snapped her 15 months title drought, clinching the Syed Modi International India Grand Prix Gold badminton crown with a straight-game victory over compatriot PV Sindhu in the women's singles competition, on Sunday. The London Olympics bronze medallist staved off the challenge from Sindhu 21-14 21-17 in the women's singles summit clash, which lasted 40 minutes at the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium in Lucknow.

6) Tata Motors managing director Karl Slym died:  Tata Motors managing director Karl Slym died on Sunday after apparently falling from a high floor of a five-star hotel in Bangkok. Slym, who was scripting a revival strategy for the company, had gone to Thailand to attend a board meeting of the firm's unit there.

7) Sania - Tecau lose in Australian Open mixed doubles: India's Sania Mirza and her Romanian partner Horia Tecau failed to clinch the Australian open mixed doubles title as they lost to French-Canadian combination of Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor in straight sets in the summit clash in Melbourne on Sunday.


8) MS Dhoni became first captain to play in four tied ODIs: MS Dhoni on 25 January 2014 became the first captain to be involved in four tied One Day International matches. Indian cricket team captain achieved this feat in Auckland, while playing third ODI match against New Zealand.

1) National Voters day celebrated: Election Commission of India celebrated the 4th National Voters Day across the country on 25 January 2014. The theme for the 4th NVD is Ethical Voting. National Voters Day is started from 25 January 2011.

2) Mohinder Singh, Radhakrishnan get Communal Harmony awards: National Communal Harmony Award for Mohinder Singh for his work done in restoring peace after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and noted academician N Radhakrishnan for his promotion of Gandhian values were announced on Saturday. Singh, along with Gandhian Radhakrishnan of Kerala, have been selected for the coveted award in the individual category while the Centre for Study of Society and Secularism, Mumbai has been selected in the organisation category.

3) Kamal Haasan, Vidya Balan, JS Verma, Yuvraj among 127 Padma awardees: Noted scientist RA Mashelkar, yoga expert BKS Iyenger, actors Kamal Haasan and Vidya Balan, tennis player Leander Paes, cricketer Yuvraj Singh, and former chief justice of India, the late JS Verma were Saturday conferred the Padma awards on the eve of the 65th Republic Day. While Mashelkar and Iyengar were the two named for Padma Vibhushan, 24 eminent people including Verma, Justice Dalveer Bhandari, Haasan, writers Anita Desai and Ruskin Bond, badminton player P Gopichand and Paes got the Padma Bhushan. Padma Awards - the country's highest civilian awards, are conferred to eminent people for their contribution in the field of social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service.

4) Japanese PM Shinzo Abe arrived in New Delhi: Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, who will be chief guest at this year's Republic day Parade, arrived in New Delhi on a three-day official trip to India. Abe, accompanied by his wife Mrs Akie Abe, is visiting India on the invitation of PM Manmohan Singh. During his three-day trip (25 -27 Jan), Abe is scheduled to hold talks with PM Manmohan Singh for the Annual Summit between India and Japan.

5) Third ODI between India-New Zealand ends in a thrilling tie:  Ravindra Jadeja very nearly pulled off a sensational victory with some lusty hits but could not take India home in the last over as the third ODI against New Zealand ended in a nail-biting tie to keep the visitors afloat in the five-match series on Saturday. Chasing New Zealand's stiff target of 315 largely built around opener Martin Guptill's 111, India came back from the dead to tie the game, riding on R Ashwin's 65 and Jadeja's 45-ball unbeaten 66 to save themselves the blushes of another overseas ODI series defeat.

6) India regain top ODI ranking after Australia lose to England:  India regained back their No 1 ranking in the ICC ODI list after Australia lost their fourth one day international against England by 57 runs thereby dropping to the second place in the 13-team table.


7)  Li Na won Australia Open 2014 singles title: Li Na made it third time lucky in the Australian Open final, beating Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 7-6 (3), 6-0 on Saturday to become the oldest woman to clinch the title in the Open era. In doing so, she became the oldest winner of the women's title, surpassing Margaret Court who was 30 when she became champion in 1973.

Padma Awards Winners 2014: PDF Download

The President of India has approved conferment of 127 Padma Awards including one duo case (counted as one) as per the list below. The list comprises two Padma Vibhushan, 24 Padma Bhushan and 101 Padma Shri Awardees.  27 of the Awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of foreigners, NRIs, PIOs and Posthumous Awardees.

Padma Awards, the country’s highest civilian awards, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. The awards are conferred by the President of India at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan sometime around March/ April.
