Army chief General VK Singh joins BJP: Former army chief Gen VK Singh — a
controversial figure during his army tenure and after — along with nearly three
dozen senior retired defence officers joined the BJP on Saturday amid promises
to set up ex-servicemen welfare commission and a war memorial once the NDA
government comes to power. Singh – who was locked in a row with the government
over his retirement age – was the first serving army chief to drag the
government to the SC.

Laxman, ex-BJP president passed away in Hyderabad: Former BJP president
Bangaru Laxman has died in Hyderabad's Yashoda Hospital on Saturday following a
prolonged illness. He was 74. He joined politics at an early age and was
elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1996. He was also jailed during the Emergency in
1975. Bangaru Laxman was president of the BJP between 2000 and 2001. Before
becoming the BJP president, Laxman was the Union minister of state for railways
between 1999 and 2000.

Mukherjee approved Telangana Bill, President’s rule imposed in Andhra Pradesh: The
Bill to carve out Telangana on Saturday received the assent of President Pranab
Mukherjee who also signed the proclamation to impose central rule in Andhra
Pradesh. The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill 2014, which got Parliament’s
approval on February 20 despite strong opposition from Seemandhra leaders, got
the Presidential assent, paving the way for creation of the country’s 29th
state by splitting Andhra Pradesh. There will be 13 districts in residuary
Andhra Pradesh while Telangana will have 10 districts, including the Hyderabad
city. In a bid to address concerns of the Seemandhra region, government had
already announced grant of Special Category Status including tax incentives to
the residuary state as part of a six-point development package for AP’s two
successor states.
Why Presidents rule?- The decision to impose the President’s Rule in Andhra
Pradesh was necessitated by N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s resignation as the Chief
Minister on February 19 as he was opposed to division of the state to carve out
Telangana.
8) Afghanistan script history, beat Bangladesh by 32 runs in Asia Cup: Afghanistan notched up their first major win against a Test playing nation as they produced an all-round performance to script an upset 32-run victory over Bangladesh in their Asia Cup match on Saturday. 1) National
Science Day celebrated: 28th February every year is celebrated as National
Science Day across the nation to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by
Indian physicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (CV Raman) on 28 February 1928.
This day is celebrated every year on this day to spread a message about the
significance of scientific applications in the daily life of the people. The
theme for 2014 is “Fostering Scientific Temper and Energy conservation”.
2) India’s
first post office savings bank ATM inaugurated in Chennai: Union Finance
Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday inaugurated the country’s first post office
savings bank ATM at the Head Post Office in Thyagaraya Nagar in Chennai. The
ATM was part of an Information Technology (IT) modernisation project of the
Department of Posts. Mr. Chidambaram said a total of Rs. 4909 crore had been
allotted for the modernisation in the interim budget. “The launching of the ATM
was a step towards making the department a completely technology oriented one,”
he said adding that the Core Banking Solutions (CBS) scheme would benefit as
much as 1,55,000 post offices.
3) Andhra
Pradesh to be under President’s Rule: Ending days of suspense, the Union
Cabinet on Friday recommended imposition of President’s Rule in Andhra Pradesh
while keeping the Assembly in suspended animation. There was political
uncertainty after Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy resigned and quit the
Congress in protest against the decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh. Placing
the Assembly under suspended animation is a mere technicality as its term ends
on June 1. Andhra Pradesh will have simultaneous election with the Lok Sabha.
4) Centre
Hikes DA by 10% for 80 lakh Employees and Pensioners: The Centre on Friday
raised dearness allowance to 100 per cent, from 90 per cent, benefiting its 50
lakh employees and 30 lakh pensioners. The government also approved the terms
of reference of the 7th Pay Commission, a move which would pave the way for
merger of 50 per cent DA with the basic pay. The Cabinet also approved minimum
pension of Rs 1000 per month under the Employees Provident Fund Organisation,
EPFO.
5) Bangalore
gets India's first electric bus: In a first-of-its-kind in the country, an
electric passenger bus, with zero emission level, was inaugurated by Transport
Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy in Bangalore on Thursday. An initiative taken up by
Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), in co-ordination with
Utopia, the air-conditioned 31-seat coach has a range of 250 km with a full battery
charge (four to six hours).

Academy Awards, campaigning and advocacy organisation ONE and Accountability
Lab started unveiling the nominations for Honesty Oscars 2014, an award that honours
not Hollywood films, but the creative work of activists and organisations that
fight global corruption.

Prasad Bhatt wins Gandhi Peace Prize for 2013: The Gandhi Peace Prize for
the year 2013 has been awarded to eminent Gandhian and environmentalist, Shri
Chandi Prasad Bhatt. The jury for the prize met under the chairmanship of the
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 18th February 2014 and decided upon his name.
The other members of the jury were Justice P Sathasivam, leader of opposition
Sushma Swaraj, Rajya Sabha MP Karan Singh, and ex-governor of West Bengal

Yatsenyuk approved as Ukraine's new prime minister: Ukraine's parliament
has approved Arseniy Yatsenyuk as the country's new prime minister. The vote
was held Thursday amid the sharp rise in tensions in the southern Crimea
region, where gunmen seized local government buildings and raised a Russian
flag. The 39-year-old Yatsenyuk has previously served as the economy minister
and foreign minister, and a speaker of parliament.

Lucia passed away in Mexico on 26 February 2014. He was 66.He recorded his

1) PAPO- Postal Assistant in Post Offices: Once you get into the job you will be
posted in Post Offices and had to work in counter. All of you might have
visited Post offices atleast once to send a Speed or Registered article no? The
person who sits in the counter and helps you in booking the article is one such
a Postal Assistant. The benefit of PAPO is that you can regularly come across
many customers and will always be updated with the latest changes happening in
the Post Office environment.
2) PASBCO-
Postal Assistant in Savings Bank Control Organization: As the name suggest
the work will be related to monitoring the Savings Bank related works. Unlike PAPO, PASBCO cannot work in all Post
Offices. The posting will only be in Head Post Offices working in the Circle.
One thing to note is that the present working procedure of PASBCO is going to
change drastically in the coming days. As the Post offices are getting migrated
to Core Banking Platform the nature of working will also change in the days to

cities within the circle (max. 2-5 offices). The benefit of PA CO/RO is that as
it is an administrative office, working days will only be 05 (Monday to
Friday). But the working hours is more in a day 9AM to 5.30PM. The nature of
working is also different in this cadre. The nature of work will be mainly File
work and PAs will not be dealing directly with the customers.
4) PARLO:
Postal Assistant in Returned Letter offices. Mail not delivered for want of
address, is re-directed to the sender if that address is there on the article.
Otherwise, it is sent to the Returned Letter Office. In the Returned Letter
Office, efforts are made to locate the correct address of the addressee, and if
located, mail is forwarded to the addressee. When the address of the addressee
cannot be located, efforts are made to locate the address of the sender by
opening the letter. If located, mail is
returned to sender. Mail which cannot be delivered either to the addressee or
to the sender is disposed of, after detention for the prescribed period. So the
working will be related to this.
5) PAMMS:
Postal Assistant in Mail Motor Services. It plays an important role in
intra-city transmission of mail between mail offices and Post Offices.
6) PAFPO:
Postal Assistant in Foreign Post Organization. Deals with the foreign
articles transmitted through Post office network.
7) SARMS:
Sorting Assistant in Railway Mail Service: Work is related to sorting of
mails being sent through the Post Office Network. An article booked through
Post office will reach the RMS. At RMS the SA will sort the mail according to
pincode or address. A SA will not be posted in Post Offices instead they will
be posted in RMS Units available within the circle mainly situated in a Railway
Station or near it. The benefit of SA is that duty will be in shifts and often
had to work in night shifts also. But once you take a night shift the next day you
will be free.

Solar Power Plant of India launched in Madhya Pradesh: The largest 130-MW
Solar Power Plant of India Welspun Solar MP Project was launched at Bhagwanpur
in Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh on 26 February 2014. It is also the Asia's Largest
Solar Power Plant. The Welspun Solar MP project was constructed at a cost of
1100 crore rupees on 305 hectares of land. It will supply power at 8.05 rupees
a kWh. This Project will raise Indian solar capacity by 7 percent.
2) Ibrahim
Mahlab sworn in as Prime Minister of Egypt: Ibrahim Mahlab was sworn in as
new Egypt Prime Minister on 25 February 2014. He is a former member of Hosni
Mubarak's political party. Mahlab was the housing minister in the previous
administration. He will head Egypt's sixth government since the 2011 uprising
that toppled the autocratic Mubarak.

Kothari clinched his maiden National billiards championship: PSPB's Sourav
Kothari picked up his maiden senior billiards national title at the Manisha
Billiards and Snooker Nationals after beating experienced Alok Kumar on 27 Feb
2014. Sourav captured his maiden national billiards title by beating Alok Kumar
5-3. Kothari clinched the title in great style, with an unbeaten break of 126,
that left Alok stranded on three national titles.

Newspaper Society (INS) celebrated its Platinum Jubilee: Born as
"Indian and Eastern Newspaper Society" on February 27, 1939 in New
Delhi, its a umbrella body of Newspapers published in India and currently has more
than 1,000 members having publications in 19 languages with a combined
circulation of 71 million copies.

Constitution Bench to take decision on legalising euthanasia: The Supreme
Court on Tuesday referred the issue of legalising euthanasia in the country to
a five-judge Constitution bench, saying there has been “inconsistent” opinion
in its previous verdicts on withdrawing medical support to terminally ill
patients. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam said that it
is extremely important to have a clear enunciation of law on this issue and
referred the matter to a larger Constitution bench.
6) AIIMS
Bhubaneswar inaugurated: Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Gulam
Nabi Azad on 26 Feb 2014 dedicated the 978 bedded All India Institute of
Medical Science (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar to the people of Odisha. Speaking on the
occasion Azad said, a satellite centre of the AIIMS, Bhubaneswar will come up
at Balasore before elections once the state government alloted 25 acre of land
for it.
7) Tech
Mahindra to acquire IT services arm of BASF: IT services major Tech
Mahindra on 27 Feb 2014 said it has signed an agreement to acquire the IT and
consultancy services business of chemical giant BASF in a bid to strengthen its
presence in Western Europe. Financial details of the deal, made through its
German subsidiary, were not disclosed. It is expected to close by June this
year.
8) ICICI Bank launched ‘branch on wheels’ in
Odisha: ICICI Bank launched ’branch on wheels’ in Odisha as part its
financial inclusion plan to provide banking services in remote villages in the
state which are devoid of banking facilities. “The ‘branch on wheels’ is a
first-of-its-kind initiative by any private sector bank in India. This is yet
another step of the bank to expand its reach to the unbanked villages,” ICICI
Bank Executive Director Rajiv Sabharwal told.

World Cup: South Africa beat Australia to set up final against Pakistan:
Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada wreaked havoc with a six-wicket haul as South Africa
trounced Australia by 80 runs to storm into the final of the ICC Under 19
Cricket World Cup on Wednesday. South Africa will now clash with Pakistan on
Saturday in the title clash.
