Daily Current Affairs Updates: 25 July 2014

1) Abhinav Bindra wins gold in men's 10m air rifle at Common Wealth Games 2014:  Abhinav Bindra made his swansong appearance at the Commonwealth Games a memorable one as the star Indian shooter won the battle of nerves in a gripping competition to bag the 10m Air Rifle gold medal, which has eluded him in the previous four attempts. Bindra, first Indian Olympic individual gold medallist, shot an aggregate of 205.3 to set a new Final Games Record. 
This is first CWG, which applied the ISSF rule of taking the final round score only and not adding the qualification score in shooting.

2) Civil services aspirants intensified protest, govt appeals for patience: The government on Friday appealed to protesting civil services aspirants to be "patient" and said it would not tolerate any injustice to them on the basis of language. A three-member government appointed committee is looking into the demands of civil services aspirants to change the pattern of the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) to give level-playing field to those coming from rural areas. There are two compulsory papers of 200 marks each in the preliminary examination. These papers are also known as CSAT I and CSAT II. Students have been objecting to the level of aptitude and English language questions being asked in the CSAT II paper claiming they are much above the standard prescribed for the examination.

3) Congress not eligible for LoP post, says Attorney General: In a setback to Congress which has been fighting for the Leader of Opposition post, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi has opined that it is not eligible and there is no precedent since the days of the first Lok Sabha to grant the post to a party which does not have the minimum required MPs. Rohatgi has conveyed this to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan who had sought his opinion in view of the dilemma she is facing over the issue, sources said.

4) CAG of India akes Over as Member of UN Board of Auditors: The Comptroller & Auditor General of India on 25 July 2014 assumed office as Member of the United Nations Board of Auditors for a six year term upto June 2020. Shri Shashi Kant Sharma took over the charge of this prestigious position from Mr. Liu Jiayi, the Auditor General of the People’s Republic of China at the United Nations Headquarters at New York. Shri Sharma was elected to this position defeating Philippines by a convincing margin of 62 votes in November 2013.  

5) Ukrainian prime minister Arseny Yatseniuk resigned: Ukraine's prime minister has resigned after the governing coalition collapsed, in a sign that five months after the Maidan protests led to a change of government, the country's political system is still beset by discord. The government is struggling to defeat an insurgency by pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country, where a Malaysia Airlines jet was downed last Thursday.

6) Tandon sworn in as Chhattisgarh Governor: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Balram Das Tandon was sworn in as the governor of Chhattisgarh on Friday. The Chief Justice of Bilaspur High Court Justice Yatindra Singh administered the oath of office to Mr. Tandon at a ceremony in Raj Bhavan here, which was attended by the Chief Minister, the State Cabinet Ministers and other dignitaries.

1) Kurdish politician Fouad Massoum elected Iraq's president: Kurdish politician FouadMassoum has been named the new president of Iraq following a parliamentary vote. Massoum, 76, is one of the founders of current President Jalal Talabani's Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party. He is considered a soft-spoken moderate, known for keeping good relations with Sunni and Shiite Arab politicians. The vote for president — a largely ceremonial post — was delayed for a day when the Kurdish bloc requested more time to select a candidate. They named Massoum as their pick late on Wednesday.


2) TCS becomes first Indian company to top Rs 5 lakh crore market cap: Outsourcing giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has become the first Indian company to exceed Rs 5 lakh crore in market capitalisation. The company's share price touched a 52-week high of Rs 2,580.60, taking its market cap to Rs 5.6 lakh crore ($86.5 billion, at 60 a dollar). The feat makes TCS the second most valuable IT services company in the world ahead of Ireland's Accenture but behind US's IBM. At present, Accenture’s market valuation stands at $51 billion and that of IBM at $193.7 billion.

3) Arijit Basu to assume charge as SBI Life MD & CEO: Arijit Basu, currently the Deputy Managing Director of State Bank of India, will take over as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SBI Life Insurance in August. Basu will replace Atanu Sen who is due to retire on July 31. Basu has been Deputy Managing Director of State Bank of India since May 2014 and serves as its Chief General Manager of Delhi. He has handled many important assignments over two-and-a-half decades in the bank. SBI Life is a joint venture between State Bank of India and BNP Paribas Cardif, in which SBI owns 74 per cent.

4) KN Tripathy sworn in as Govenor of West Bengal: Former Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Mr. Keshari Nath Tripathy was sworn in as the Govenor of West Bengal on Thursday. The Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court Mr. Asim Kumar Banerjee administered the oath of office to Mr. Tripathy at a function in Raj Bhavan in Kolkata Thursday afternoon. The State Chief Minister Miss Mamata Banerjee, her Cabinet colleagues, members of the diplomatic corps and other distinguished guests were present at the swearing-in-ceremony.

5) Doordarshan music show to feature in Limca book of records: A reality show based on classical music aired by Doordarshan will feature in the Limca Book of Records. "Our show 'Naad Bhed-The Mystery of Sound', the first ever reality show on classical music, has been selected by the Limca Book of Records, to be featured in its next edition under Television chapter: for being the First ever National- level Reality show on Classical Music," a statement issued by Doordarshan said. Officials said that 'Naad Bhed' is a first of its kind national-level reality television show in the country and possibly the world, on classical music.

6) India's Mars orbiter completes about 80 percent of its journey: Inching closer to the red planet, India's ambitious Mars orbiter spacecraft has covered more than 540 million kilometres, about 80 percent of its journey for its rendezvous with the planet scheduled for 24 September. The spacecraft has covered a distance of more than 540 million kilometres on its helio centric journey to the red planet, ISRO said. "Yes, that is very close to a whopping 80 percent". Mars Orbit Mission and its payloads are in good health," ISRO said on Twitter.

7) Train, bus collision kills 25 school children in Telangana: Twenty five schoolgoers and the driver of their bus were killed when the Nanded-Secunderabad passenger train rammed into it at an unmanned railway crossing at Chegunta in Masaipet village of Veldurthi mandal in Medak district on Thursday.


8) Weightlifter Khumukcham Sanjita wins India's first gold at Commonwealth Games: Khumukcham Sanjita and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu bagged a gold and silver, respectively, in women's 48kg weightlifting in a display of overwhelming domination to open India's medal account on the opening day of the competition in the 20th Commonwealth Games on Thursday. Sanjita won with a total lift of 173kg (77+96) while Mirabai grabbed the silver with a cumulative effort of 170 (75+95) in the absence of other strong competitors. India finished first day with 7 medals (2 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze) in Commonwealth Games 2014.  Sukhen Dey has won the second gold medal for India in weight lifting.

1) 20th Commonwealth Games began in Glasgow: The 20th Commonwealth Games began in Glasgow. Scotland rolled out a spectacular opening ceremony with a dazzling and colourful display of their unique culture and heritage, which also had some Indian flavour. A surprisingly subdued Glasgow suddenly sprang to life and exuberance with a three-hour mesmerising show of light and sound and colourful hues which the organisers claimed was watched by more than one billion people. The Indian contingent headed by flag bearer and Olympic silver medalist shooter Vijay Kumar led the Parade of Nations, by virtue of being hosts in 2010 Delhi edition. 2) India, Pakistan foreign secretaries to meet on August 25: After the decision to invite Nawaz Sharif for PM Narendra Modi's swearing in, his government on Wednesday pulled another rabbit out of its hat as it confirmed a meeting between the foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan next month. Foreign secretary Sujatha Singh will travel to Islamabad for a meeting with her counterpart Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry on August 25 in a likely attempt to revive the dialogue process which has effectively remained stalled since the ceasefire violations in January 2013.

3) Plane crashed in Taiwan, 47 trapped, feared dead:  A plane landing in stormy weather crashed outside an airport on a small Taiwanese island late Wednesday, and the transport minister said 47 people were trapped and feared dead. Another 11 people were injured when the ATR-72 operated by Taiwan's TransAsia Airways crashed on Penghu, an island in the Taiwan Strait between Taiwan and China, Transport Minister Yeh Kuang-shih was quoted as saying by the government's Central News Agency. The plane was arriving from Kaohsiung, a city in southern Taiwan.

4) Honda Mobilio Launched in India: Honda Cars India on Wednesday launched its new Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), the Mobilio at a starting price of Rs 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The petrol car will cost Rs 6.49 lakh for the E variant; Rs 7.50 lakh for S variant and Rs 8.76 lakh for the V variant.


5) World Bank President Jim Yong Kim meets PM Narendra Modi: The President of the World Bank, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, called on the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday. The Prime Minister described the meeting as "very fruitful." "We discussed several ways of working together in the times to come," he said. In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister said: "We talked about the importance of scale and the need to work on a scale that inspires people and positively transforms their lives. We live in a world where speed matters. Quick execution is essential. Speeding up World Bank projects will surely increase the impact."

6) Cabinet clears 49% FDI in insurance with Indian control: The Modi Government set the ball rolling on its first major economic reform on Thursday. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the raising of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) cap in insurance from 26 percent to 49 percent through the Foreign Investment Promotion Board route. The government will now bring a Bill before Parliament in the current session as the Bill for the same proposal the UPA Government had mooted lapsed after the last Lok Sabha's dissolution.


7) Ram Naik Sworn-In as Uttar Pradesh Governor: Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Ram Naik was on 22 July 2014 sworn-in as the 27th Governor of Uttar Pradesh at a ceremony held in Raj Bhawan in Lucknow. 80-year-old Mr Naik was administered oath of office by Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud this evening. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, several ministers, lawmakers, senior bureaucrats and senior officers from the police department were present on the occasion.

IB P.A. and JIO-II/Tech Exam held on June 29, 2014 Results Published

On the basis of written test held on June 29, 2014 for the posts of P.A. and JIOII/Tech in Intelligence Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs has published the results. Candidates having roll numbers in list have been shortlisted for skill test in stenography for the post of PA and trade test followed by interview for the post of JIO-II/Tech. The trade test followed by interview for the post of JIO-II/Tech is to be held on August 27-29, 2014 while stenographic skill test for the
post of P.A. will be held on August 30, 2014.
