1) Rajya Sabha passed private bill for transgender rights:
--> In a historic legislative action, the Rajya Sabha approved a private member’s bill on the rights of transgenders on 24 April 2015.
--> The Bill also guarantees reservation in education and jobs, financial aid and social inclusion.
--> This is the first time in 45 years that a private members' Bill has been passed by the House.
--> Usually a private member’s bill—introduced by a legislator who is not a member of the cabinet—is withdrawn after discussion in the upper House.
--> The bill was introduced by Rajya Sabha member Tiruchi Siva of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on 12 December 2014.

2) Arun Jaitley moved GST bill in Lok Sabha:
--> Finance minister Arun Jaitley on 24 April 2015 moved the constitution amendment bill for the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) for discussion and passage in the Lok Sabha.
--> While most of the opposition parties wanted the bill to be sent to the standing committee for finance, the government stood firm.
--> The Congress staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha over this issue.
--> GST is set to be rolled out from 1 April 2016.

3) National Panchayati Raj Day observed:
--> National Panchayati Raj Day was observed across India on 24 April 2015.
--> The day is observed to mark the passing of the Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992 that came into force with effect from 24 April 1993.
--> On the day, the best performing Gram Panchayats and Gram Sabhas were honoured with Panchayat Sashaktikaran Award 2015 and Rashtriya Gaurav Gram Sabha Award 2015.

4) India ranked 117 in global happiness index:
--> India has not fared well in a global ranking of the happiest nations, coming in at the 117th spot out of 158 countries on the index that took into account GDP per capita, life expectancy, social support and freedom to make life choices as indicators of happiness.
--> Switzerland has been named the most happiest country in the world, coming in at the number one spot on the 2015.
--> World Happiness Report published by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), which is a global initiative for the United Nations.
--> The other countries in the top five are Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Canada.

5) ICICI Bank launches app for Apple's iWatch:
--> ICICI Bank has launched an application for iWatch, on expectations that that wearable payment solutions would pick-up soon.
--> The application will enable customers of ICICI Bank to view their transactions and do limited transactions such pay utility bill and recharge prepaid mobile.
--> HDFC Bank was the first to announce the launch of this application about a week ago.

6) Gurpreet Sandhu becomes first Indian in 79 years to play for 1st division European club:
--> Gurpreet Singh Sandhu became the first Indian footballer to play for a top-tier European club, after the custodian made his debut for Stabaek FC in a Norwegian Cup tie against Runar on 22 April 2015.
--> The 23-year-old joined the former Norwegian champion on a three-year contract last year and is second choice goalkeeper behind Ivory Coast international Sayouba Mande. 

7) Crompton Greaves to exit consumer products business:
--> Avantha Holdings Ltd. the parent company of Crompton Greaves Ltd. (CG) has decided to exit CG’s consumer products business and sell its 34.37 per cent stake to American private equity major Advent International Corporation and a subsidiary of Singapore’s Temasek Holdings for Rs.2,000 crore.
--> The consumer products business, called Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Ltd. (CGCEL), will be demerged from CG into separate company.
--> After the demerger, CGCEL will own CG’s consumer products business.
--> The business manufactures and markets a wide array of consumer products, ranging from fans, lamps and luminaries to pumps and household appliances such as water heaters, mixer grinders, toasters, irons and electric lanterns.

8) India’s Healthcare Tourism Portal Inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi:
--> Prime Minister of India inaugurated India’s Healthcare Portal at the ‘SAAARC Trade Mart’ in the Global Exhibition on Services, in ITPO, Pragati Maidan on 24 April 2015.
--> The portal is a comprehensive one-point information site and covers hospital-related and travel-related information on India.

9) Government allowed investing 5 per cent of EPFO corpus in stock markets:
--> Union Government has allowed Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), India’s retirement fund body to invest five per cent of its corpus in exchange traded funds i.e. in stock markets.

--> The new pattern allows the retirement fund body to invest 5% of its incremental income in Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) from the current financial year.

Banking Current Affairs - April 2015 (4th Week)

1) Anjan Lahiri named new CEO of Birlasoft:  Former Sasken chief executive and Mindtree co-founder Anjan Lahiri has been appointed chief executive of BirlaSoft, the information-technology arm of the CK Birla Group.

2) Tata Teleservices to drop DoCoMo from its telecom brand Tata Docomo: Tata Teleservices has decided to drop the brand DoCoMo from its telecom brand Tata Docomo months before its agreement with Japanese mobile phone operator NTT DoCoMo to use the brand ends. In June 2014, Tata and NTT DoCo-Mo reached an understanding under which Tata Teleservices was allowed to use the Tata Docomo brand name for at least a year. As part of the understanding, NTT DoCoMo agreed to let Tata use the brand name in lieu of a "marginal royalty".

3) New income tax forms put on hold: The new income tax return forms, requiring stringent disclosures, are on the hold for now. The tax authorities have made several additions to the income tax return forms for the assessment year 2015-16 seeking details about foreign assets and income from any source outside the country, and details of all bank accounts held in India at any time during the previous year.

4) IAS, IPS officers need government approval before accepting gifts of over Rs 5,000: IAS and IPS officers will now need to take prior permission from the Union government before accepting gifts, including free transportation, boarding and lodging, worth more than Rs 5,000.

5) Elector's Photo Identity Card(EPIC) or  Aadhaar enough to get PAN card: An EPIC or Aadhaar document will now be enough for any individual to obtain PAN card as the Income Tax Department has relaxed the cumbersome procedure of having multiple documents to prove one's own identity. 

6) ICICI launched near-field communications-enabled payment service 'Tap-n-Pay': Largest private sector lender ICICI Bank in collaboration with Tech Mahindra launched a payment service 'Tap-n-Pay' based on the near-field communications (NFC) technology, enabling customers make over-the-counter payments without using cash. It can be used for merchant payments by merely tapping a NFC-enabled mobile phone or a tag on the counter.

7) Federal Bank offers health insurance of Rs 1 lakh for new accounts:  South-based lender Federal Bank announced it will be offering a health insurance of Rs 1 lakh for all new savings accounts under a tie-up with Max Bupa.

8) BHEL commissioned 250-mw thermal power plant in Gujarat: State-owned power equipment maker BHEL has commissioned a 250-mw coal-based thermal power plant in Gujarat.

9) Government introduced bill to raise investment limits for MSME units: Government on 20 April 2015 introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha to enhance the investment limits for micro, small and medium enterprises and also made a provision for enhancing it further through a notification. The investment limits in plant and machinery for the micro enterprises is proposed to be raised to Rs 50 lakh, of small enterprise to Rs 10 crore and medium enterprise to Rs 30 crore. The existing limit are Rs 25 lakh, Rs 5 and Rs 10 crore respectively.


10) Airtel-Vodafone JV deployed Wi-Fi network in Supreme Court premises: FireFly Networks, an equal joint venture between Vodafone India and Bharti Airtel, has equipped the Supreme Court of India with a 24x7 Wi-Fi network with services currently being provided by the local unit of the British telecom major.

1) Indian-American Vivek Murthy took charge as U.S. Surgeon-General:
--> Indian-American Vivek Murthy was sworn-in as the U.S. Surgeon-General by Vice-President Joe Biden at a ceremony on 23 April 2015, becoming the youngest-ever in-charge of the country’s public health.
--> Dr. Murthy, who took the oath on the Gita, is now the highest ranking Indian-American in the Obama administration.
--> Dr. Murthy is the country’s 19th Surgeon General.

2) BSNL landline offers free pan-India calls from 9pm to 7am:
--> BSNL on 23 April 2015 announced unlimited free calling scheme during night hours from its fixed line phones to any operator including mobile phones anywhere in the country from 1 May.
--> The scheme would be operational between 9pm to 7am and would cover all type of connections, BSNL said in a statement.
--> This plan is aimed at boosting landline business.

3) Calbuco volcano erupted in Chile for the first time in 42 years:
--> The Calbuco volcano has erupted for the first time in more than 42 years, billowing a huge ash cloud over a sparsely populated, mountainous area in southern Chile.
--> Calbuco last erupted in 1972 and is considered one of the top three most potentially dangerous among Chile’s 90 active volcanos.

4) National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology inked MoU with Snapdeal:
--> National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) on 23 April 2015 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with e-commerce giant Snapdeal to roll out digital marketing courses.
--> The MoU aims at helping small and medium enterprises/businesses and artisans who want to take the online route to become entrepreneurs.

--> India and France on 23 April 2015 began 10-day naval exercise 'Varuna' that will see 12 Rafale fighter jets in action off the Goa coast along with a host of naval assets of both countries.
--> The 14th edition of 'Varuna' started with the arrival of four French naval ships at Goa including aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, two destroyers Chevalier Paul and Jean de Vienne, replenishment tanker Meuse and a maritime patrol aircraft Atlantique 2.

--> United Nations (UN) observed World Book and Copyright Day across the world on 23 April 2015.
--> The day is an opportunity to recognise the power of books to change our lives for the better and to support books and those who produce them.
--> For the year 2015, UNESCO designated Incheon, South Korea as the World Book Capital 2015 in recognition of its programme to promote reading among people and underprivileged sections of the population.
--> In 1995, UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on 23 April, as the date is also the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

--> Senior IPS officer Rajiv Ranjan Verma was on 22 April 2015 appointed as Director General of Railway Protection Force (RPF).
--> Verma, a 1978 batch IPS officer of Bihar cadre, is presently posted as Director General of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

--> He has been appointed for a period upto the date of his superannuation, i.E. February 29, 2016, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said.
