Daily Current Affairs Updates: 22 April 2015

1) Sports Ministry de-recognised Paralympic Committee of India (PCI):
--> Union Sports Ministry has de-recognised the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) with immediate effect.
--> Ministry has said that the decision has been taken in the wake of numerous serious complaints about poor management/conduct of the 15th National Para Athletics Championships at Ghaziabad from March 20 to 22.

2) Sesa Sterlite renamed Vedanta Ltd:
--> Metals and mining conglomerate Sesa Sterlite on 22 April 2015 said it has changed its name to Vedanta Ltd to better align with its international identity - Vedanta Resources.
--> Sesa Sterlite is a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources Plc, UK, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange and represents the Vedanta group.
--> The promoters hold 59.53 per cent stake in Sesa Sterlite. 

3) International Mother Earth Day observed:
--> International Mother Earth Day was observed globally on 22 April 2015.
--> The theme for 2015 was "It’s our turn to lead".
--> The theme highlights the need for change and seeks to inform the communities and leadership that action needs to be taken on climate.
--> International Mother Earth Day also known as Earth Day is being celebrated across the world since 1970.

4) Azim Premji's son Rishad appointed director of Wipro:
--> Wipro, on Tuesday, announced the appointment of billionaire Azim Premji’s elder son Rishad Premji to its board effective May 1, 2015.
--> Presently, Mr. Rishad is the Chief Strategy Officer and driving the merger and acquisitions functions of the company.

5) Railways introduced 'Operation 5 mins':
--> Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu launched Mobile Application for Paperless Unreserved Ticketing through video conferencing on Egmore–Tambaram Suburban Section of Chennai, at a function on 22 April 2015.
--> This is a pilot project covering 15 stations in Southern Railway and will be extended to entire country in phases.
--> Developed by Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), ‘utsonmobile’ — the paperless unreserved ticketing feature in mobile application aims to eliminate the need for printing of unreserved tickets.
--> Railway Minister said that for the passenger, the Indian Railways is committed to ‘Operation Five Minutes’ – that is, purchase of an unreserved ticket within five minutes.

6) NASA developed first 3-D printed copper rocket engine part:
--> NASA engineers have developed the first full-scale, 3-D printed copper rocket engine part - a combustion chamber liner that operates at extreme temperatures and pressures.
--> Combustion chamber was manufactured by using selective laser melting machine in the Laboratory located in Marshall Space Flight Centre’s Materials and Processing.

7) Cabinet approved changes in Juvenile Justice Act:
--> Union Cabinet has approved the introduction of Amendment to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill 2014.
--> It has special provisions to tackle heinous offences like murder and rape committed by juveniles in the age group of 16-18 years.
--> On the basis of the approval of the Cabinet, a bill amending the current law will be introduced in the current session of Parliament.

8) Information and Broadcasting Ministry gets ISO 9001:2008 certification:
--> Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has received an ISO 9001:2008 certification from the British Standards Institute.
--> The ISO certification was granted to Ministry in respect of various permissions and licences issued by it for the broadcasting and print media and films.
--> These licences or permissions include for satellite Television channels, multi-system operators, teleports, community radio stations and DTH services.

9) Al Jazeera taken off air for five days for showing wrong India map:
--> International news channel Al Jazeera was on 22 April 2015 forced to go off air in the India for five days as the government penalized it for repeatedly showing wrong maps of India.

10) Egypt court sentenced Mohamed Morsi to 20 years in prison:
--> Egyptian court sentenced ousted President Mohamed Morsi to 20 years in prison without parole on 21 April 2015 for the killing of protesters in December 2012.
--> In 2012 Mohamed Mursi became Egypt’s first freely elected president.
--> But protests began building less than a year into his rule when he issued a decree granting himself far-reaching powers.
--> He was deposed by the army in July 2013 following mass street protests against his rule.

11) IDBI Bank, NPCI launched platinum debit card:
--> Public sector lender IDBI Bank has tied up with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to launch Rupay Platinum Debit card with upgraded features.

12) Bengal cricket player died after on-field accident:
--> Ankit Keshri, a former captain of the Bengal Under-19 team, died on 20 April 2015 in Kolkata three days after a freakish accident on the cricket field.
--> Keshri had collided with his team-mate Sourabh Mondal on Friday while attempting a catch and had been rushed to the hospital after he stopped breathing briefly.

13) English batsman Liam Livingstone sets world record:
--> Lancashire batsman Liam Livingstone has smashed a world record 350 in just 138 balls during a one-day match.

--> The 21-year-old all-rounder scored 34 fours and 27 sixes for Nantwich in a Royal London National Club Championship game against Caldy.
