Australian Open 2014- Complete list of Winners

The 2014 Australian Open took place at Melbourne Park, Australia between 13–26 January 2014. It was the 102nd edition of the Australian Open, and the first Grand Slam tournament of the year 2014. The tournament consisted of events for professional players in singles, doubles and mixed doubles play. Junior and wheelchair players competed in singles and doubles tournaments. Li Na won the women's singles, beating Dominika Cibulkova in the final. Stanislas Wawrinka defeated Rafael Nadal in the men's singles final to win his first grand slam title.

1) Union Cabinet clears Telangana Bill, Hyderabad to be joint capital: In a special meeting held on Friday, the Union Cabinet cleared the Telangana Bill which will be introduced in Parliament on February 12. The bill will be presented in the Rajya Sabha in the present form and the government will move 32 amendments when it is taken up for consideration. Despite vehement demands the legislation does not provide for grant of Union Territory status to Hyderabad but the government will announce a special package for Rayalaseema and north coastal Andhra to address concerns of the people there.

2) RBI permits 4 non-bank entities to set up white label ATMs: The Reserve Bank on Friday said it has issued ‘certificate of authorisation’ to four non-bank entities, including Tata Communications Payment Solutions and Muthoot Finance, to set up White Label ATMs (WLAs) in the country. The other two non-bank entities to which the Reserve Bank has issued the certificate for setting up and operating the White Label ATMs are Prizm Payment Services and Vakrangee Ltd. While Tata, Muthoot and Prizm have already launched their services, Vakrangee Ltd is likely to commence its service shortly, the central bank said. Most of the ATMs belong to banks, but the cash dispensing machines which are owned and operated by non-banking companies are called White Label ATMs.

3) Maruti stops production of iconic M-800 model: The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki has stopped production of its nearly three-decade-old popular car Maruti 800 with effect from January 18, according to a senior company executive. The small car was being sold in non-metros in the last two years. But with the stoppage of production, it will now no longer be available to the public.

4) 15,800 additional MBBS seats to be created in country: Health minister- With the availability of doctors being a dismal 0.5 for every 1,000 persons in the country, the Centre has proposed to create an additional 15,800 MBBS seats, Lok Sabha was informed on Friday.

5) Parliamentary panel recommends increasing retirement age to 65: A parliamentary committee has recommended that retirement age should be increased from 60 years to 65 years, citing the increase in ageing population and their productivity. In its report tabled in Lok Sabha today, the committee also advocated a host of benefits to the geriatric population, including upping their income tax exemption limit and setting up of super-speciality hospitals in all states exclusively for them.

6) Bill for people with disability moved in Rajya Sabha: A bill that increases quota for disabled people in government jobs from 3-5 percent was introduced in the Rajya Sabha Friday. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2014, was introduced in the upper house by Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Mallikarjun Kharge amid the din.

7) 22nd Sochi Winter Games began in Russia: Olympic athletes were on Friday set to compete for the first medals of the Sochi Winter Games after Russia staged a thrilling opening ceremony aimed at convincing sceptics it was a worthy host. President Vladimir Putin declared open the 22nd Winter Olympics which are inextricably linked with his name, after he championed the idea, bid and sometimes controversial construction race to host the Games in the Black Sea resort. 03 Indian players will be competing under the 'independent athletes' category and will not be able to use the flag of India. Indian athletes will be able to use the Indian flag if the Olympic committee cancels the suspension order given for Indian Olympic Association.

8) Indian-origin hedge fund manager convicted of insider trading: Indian-origin hedge fund portfolio manager Mathew Martoma has been convicted for his role in the $275 million insider trading scheme, the most lucrative in U.S. history, which involved sharing of secret information on testing of a potential breakthrough Alzheimer’s drug.

9) Marco Lambertini appointed as director-general of WWF International: The global conversation organisation, WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) on 6 February 2014 appointed Marco Lambertini as director-general (DG) of the WWF International. His new role as the DG will start on 1 May 2014.

10) Amul wins AIMA brand performance award: All India Management Association (AIMA), the national apex body of management professionals in the country, has conferred the high performance brand award for 2013 on Amul, the milk brand marketed by Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF).

11) Malala nominated for ‘Children’s Nobel Prize’: Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai has been nominated for the World Children’s Prize in Sweden for her crusade for education rights for girls. The 16-year-old, who lives in Britain following extensive medical treatment, was shot by the Taliban in 2012 for her outspoken views supporting education for girls in Pakistan. The World Children’s Prize, also known as the ‘Children’s Nobel Prize’, was founded in 2000 and aims to raise awareness of children’s rights in 60,000 schools in 110 countries through educational programmes.

12) John Thompson appointed Chairman of Microsoft: John Thompson was appointed as the Chairman of Microsoft on 5 February 2014 by the Board of Directors at a meeting held in Washington, US. He succeeded Bill Gates who assumed the role of Technology Advisor to the CEO of Microsoft. He was also the former chairman and CEO of Symantec Corp.

13) Agni-5 to be ready for induction in armed forces by next year:  The Agni-5 intercontinental ballistic missile, which has a strike range of more than 5,500 km, is expected to be ready for induction into the armed forces by next year after completion of development trials, DRDO chief Avinash Chander said.

1) Delhi govt orders probe against Sheila Dikshit on CWG projects: In yet another move aimed at needling outside ally Congress, the AAP government on Thursday directed its Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to probe a number of Commonwealth Games related projects that were implemented during the reign of Sheila Dikshit. The government has particularly asked ACB to probe the alleged irregularities in street light projects in which the Prime Minister-appointed Shunglu Committee had questioned certain decisions made by Dikshit.

2) India extends visa-on-arrival facility to 180 countries: In a significant step towards liberalization of the visa regime, the government on Wednesday cleared two initiatives: visa on arrival and electronic travel authorization for all countries barring eight "prior reference'' countries including Pakistan, Iran, Sri Lanka and China. ETA will allow foreign travelers to apply for a visa from home and receive an online confirmation in five working days. India currently offers visa-on-arrival to tourists from 11 countries like Finland, the Philippines, Singapore and Japan.

3) Huawei allegedly hacked BSNL network: Government- Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei allegedly hacked state-owned BSNL's network and the government is investigation the matter, Parliament was informed. "The government has constituted an inter- ministerial team to investigate the matter," Minister of State for Communications and IT Killi Kruparani informed the Lok Sabha.

4) Vishwanath Tripathi selected for Vyas Samman 2013: Eminent Hindi writer Vishwanath Tripathi been selected for the prestigious Vyas Samman for the year 2013. Tripathi has been chosen for the coveted annual literary award instituted in 1991 by the K K Birla Foundation for his memoir 'Vyomkesh Darvesh', a biolgraphy of noted Hindi scholar Acharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedi. It is  given to outstanding literary work in Hindi published during the last 10 years.

5) Times Now “Amazing Indian Award” has been awarded to Arunima Sinha: The Vice President of India M. Hamid Ansari presented an “Amazing Indian Award” instituted by Times Now channel to Ms Arunima Sinha, the first female amputee to climb the Mount Everest in the world.

6) India Vs New Zealand Test series began: The test series between India and New Zealand began in Auckland. New Zealand has finished on top during the opening day after posting 329 at the loss of four wickets at the close, boosted by centuries from captain Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson.

7) New Microsoft chief will get $4.8 million this year, $18 m in 2015: The winner takes it all. Satya Nadella, who has been appointed as CEO of Microsoft, will earn $4.8 million in the current financial year. While Nadella gets an annual salary of $1.2 million, he will get three times ($3.6 million) more as a cash award. This will go up to $18 million next year as he becomes eligible for stock awards.

8) Govt. committee set up to suggest steps to ensure security of North East people: The government on Thursday set up a committee to suggest suitable remedial measures to address concerns regarding security of people from North East. The six-member panel to be headed by M P Bezbaruah, a retired bureaucrat, will submit its report within two months after examining the causes behind the attacks, violence and discrimination against the people from the Northeast. The decision comes in the wake of death of Nido Taniam, a student from Arunachal Pradeshn New Delhi last month.

9) Bureau of Energy Efficiency had calculated that the new fuel efficiency standards from 2017 would help India reduce oil consumption by 2.22 million tonnes of oil equivalent (mtoe) by 2017 and 10.5 mtoe by 2022.

10) Delhi is India’s official bid for the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site: Centre has given its nod to Delhi’s bid for UNESCO World Heritage City status. Delhi has cited the historical city of Shahjahanabad and the more recent Lutyens’ Delhi in its bid for heritage status. The deadline for submitting entries ended last week.

11) Vodafone India's Rs 10,141 crore FDI proposal cleared by Cabinet: The  Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Thursday approved the telecom major Vodafone's Rs 10,141 crore (or $1.6 billion) proposal to buy out minority shareholders in its Indian unit. This is the single largest foreign investment in the telecom sector. Follwoing the CCEA clearance, Vodafone India will be the country's first telecom player to be fully owned by a foreign company.


12) Google Launched Chromebox For Meetings & Videoconferencing: At a small media event in Mountain Viewon Thursday, Google announced the launch of Chromebox for Meetings, a $999 Core i7-based ASUS Chromebox setup with a remote, camera and microphone for conference rooms. Chromebox video-conferencing tool is available in the US at a starting price of $999 and is to be released later this year in Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Japan, New Zealand, and Spain. As many as 15 people can take part in a Chromebox video conference using smartphones, tablets, laptops or other Internet linked computers.
