Happy Father’s Day 2014
June 15, 2014(Sunday) is celebrated in
India as Father’s Day. A day exclusively
dedicated for our loving dads.
Father's Day is a celebration honoring
fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of
fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June
including India, but it is also celebrated widely on other days. Father's Day
was created to complement Mother's Day, a celebration that honors mothers and
motherhood.
“A dad is someone who
wants to catch you
before you fall
but instead picks you
up,
brushes you off,
and lets you try again.”
“A dad is someone who
wants to keep you from
making mistakes
but instead lets you
find your own way,
even though his heart
breaks in silence
when you get hurt. “
“A dad is someone who
holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break
the rules,
shines with pride when
you succeed,
and has faith in you even
when you fail...”Saturday, June 14, 2014
Current Affairs Updates: 13 June 2014
1) Netherlands
thrashed champion Spain 5-1 in World Cup: Louis van Gaal, one of the game's
greatest coaches, was criticized before the World Cup for being too defensive
for a nation that loves attacking play. His decision to field five defenders
against Spain though, proved a masterstroke. His team thrashed the defending
world champions spain 5-1 on Friday with a clinical display of counterattacking
football that had Spain chasing shadows at the end as Dutch fans roared
''Ole!'' each time their team passed the ball. It was Spain's worst loss in the
tournament since a 6-1 defeat to Brazil in 1950. In the day's other matches,
Chile beat Australia 3-1, leaving Spain at the bottom of Group B. In Group A,
Mexico edged Cameroon 1-0 on a 61st-minute goal by Oribe Peralta to take second
spot behind Brazil.
2) In
a major achievement, India becomes permanent Signatory to Washington Accord:
In a major boost to technical education & engineering programs, India on
Friday joined a select group of 17 countries who are permanent signatories of
the Washington Accord (WA). The meeting of the International Engineering
Alliance of WA member countries met in Wellington, New Zealand Friday morning
and gave India the signatory status with immediate effect. Union Minster of
Human Resource Development Smt Smriti Zubin Irani has congratulated the
officials of the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the National Board
of Accreditation, and said that “this will ensure highest quality assurance
standards to be implemented in our technical and engineering programmes and provide
global mobility to our engineering graduates.” It will enable global
recognition of Indian degrees in engineering and technical education
translating into global employment opportunities.
3) Canara
Bank expands overseas network to New York: Close on the heels of opening a
branch in Johannesburg in South Africa, Bangalore-based public sector lender
Canara Bank opened another overseas branch at New York, USA. This is its
seventh overseas branch after London, Leicester (UK), Hong Kong, Shanghai,
Bahrain and Johannesburg. In addition to the above, the bank has a
representative office at Sharjah and a joint-venture bank in Moscow. With the
inauguration of New York branch, the bank has now presence in eight
geographies— UK, USA, Hong Kong, China, Bahrain, South Africa, UAE and Russia.
4) Uganda's
Sam Kahamba Kutesa elected President for the 69th Session of UNGA: Uganda’s
Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Kahamba Kutesa on 11 June 2014 was elected as the
President of 69th Session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The theme
for the 69th session is Delivering on and Implementing a Transformative
Post-2015 Development Agenda.
5) Maharashtra
Assembly passed bill to ban dance shows in star hotels: A day before the
end of the session, the Maharashtra Assembly passed a bill banning dance
performances in five, four, three star hotels and gymkhanas. The urgency with
which the bill was passed in the Assembly on Friday evening could be gauged
from the fact that there was not much discussion on the ban. The bill was placed
before the Legislative Council on Friday itself and is expected to be cleared
in the same way. The move to ban dance performances in star hotels and
gymkhanas came after the state government realised that the only way to keep
the ban on dance bars going was to also ban such performances in five-star
hotels.
6) Amit
Shah unanimously elected president of Gujarat Cricket Association: BJP
leader Amit Shah was on Saturday elected unopposed as the Gujarat Cricket
Association (GCA) president, a post that had been left vacant after the
resignation of Prime Minister. Modi resigned from the post before he took the
oath of office as Prime Minister recently.
