1) Republic Day parade telecast to have
sign language interpreter: The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting
has directed Prasar Bharati to have a sign language interpreter during the
telecast of the Republic Day ceremony. Prasar Bharati will have an inset box on
TV screens for a sign language expert to give the hearing-impaired access to
the parade proceedings. This will be available on three of its all-India
channels as well as DD Urdu, DD Bharati and DD News. The move comes after the
I&B Minister Manish Tewari received a representation from the National
Association of the Deaf.
2) Yahoo CFO to quit job: Henrique
de Castro, the chief operating officer of Yahoo, will leave the company on
Thursday, Yahoo announced on Wednesday in a report to the US Securities and
Exchange Commission. No reason was given for his the abrupt departure of de
Castro, one of Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer’s top managers. He was
responsible for managing Yahoo’s sales, operations, media and business
development worldwide.
3) Arunachal Pradesh witnessed the first
trial run of rail engine: Arunachal Pradesh witnessed the first trial run
of a rail engine on 15 January 2014. The first trial run was of 20-km from
Harmutty in Lakhimpur district of Assam to the Arunachal Pradesh capital
Itanagar.
4) India planning Agni-4 missile test
next week: India is planning to carry out a development trial of the 4,000
km-range nuclear weapon capable Agni-4 missile off the coast of Odisha next
week. This would be the third test-firing of the missile, which has the
second-largest striking range in country's weapon arsenal. The third test-firing
of the Agni-4 missile is planned to be carried out early next week off the
coast of Odisha, DRDO officials said.
5) Bharti Airtel likely to buy Loop
Mobile: Bharti Airtel is in talks to
buy out Mumbai-based Loop Mobile in a deal that will give the telecom major
about three million customers. Loop, which owns a mobile telephony licence for
the Mumbai circle, is in negotiations with Airtel and other telecom firms to
sell its business in a Rs 750 crore deal.
6) Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) ties up
with SBI Cards: Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) and SBI Cards have joined hands
for roll-out of credit cards to customers of India’s first women-focused
commercial bank. This will be the first instance of a public sector bank
promoting a white-label credit card issued by SBI Cards.
7) Spain No. 1 in unchanged top 25 in
FIFA rankings: World and European champion Spain remains No. 1 in an unchanged
top 25 in the FIFA world rankings after a month in which only 18 international
friendlies were played.
8) Mobile phone malware `Cabir’ turns
10: 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of Cabir, the world’s first mobile
phone malware. From Cabir to FakeDefend, the last decade has seen the number of
mobile malware explode. Mobile malware incidentally has followed the same
evolution as PC malware, but at a much faster pace.
9) Jet Airways CEO resigned: Jet
Airways (India) Ltd.’s CEO Garry Kenneth Toomey, who joined the airline barely
seven months ago, has resigned. Mr. Toomey’s resignation is effective
immediately, the airline said on Thursday, without giving any details regarding
the circumstances of his resignation.
10) Samsung unveils 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3
Lite: Samsung has officially
announced its new budget tablet, Galaxy Tab 3 Lite (7"). Galaxy Tab 3 Lite
(7") tablet sports a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1024x600p. It is
powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor and packs 1GB of RAM. The tablet
measures 193x117x9.7mm and weighs 310gm. The tablet comes with 8GB internal
storage expandable via microSD card, and sports a 2MP rear camera. It doesn't
feature a front facing camera.
11) RBI fines two co-op banks: The
Reserve Bank of India has imposed penalties of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2 lakh on
Rajkot Nagarik Sahakari Bank, and The Gandhidham Mercantile Co-operative Bank,
respectively. In a statement, the RBI said, the Rajkot Nagarik Sahakari Bank
has been penalised for violations relating to income recognition and asset
classification norms, non-compliance with the instructions in respect of
issuance of demand draft/postal order against cash, non-adherence to
Know-Your-Customer norms and persistence of certain deficiencies pointed out in
earlier inspection reports.
12) Obama declared 2014 as year of
action: US President Barack Obama has declared 2014 as a year of action to
accomplish his key administrative goals and said that he would continue to use
his executive authority — his pen and phone — to get things done.
13) Posco steel plant to be operational
in few weeks: Prime Minster- The much-delayed $ 12 billion Posco steel
project in Odisha is set to be operational in the next few weeks and granting
of mining concession to the South Korean firm was in an advanced stage of
processing, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Thursday.
