1) INS Viraat begun its final
journey:
--> After nearly 60 years of sailing
across the oceans, the Indian Navy's warhorse aircraft carrier, the INS Viraat,
is now making her last operational deployment before she is retired later this
year.
--> With more than 1, 200 officers and
sailors onboard, the Viraat, which entered service on May 12, 1987.
2) Renowned Classical Dancer
Mrilalini Sarabhai passes away:
--> Renowned Classical Dancer Mrilalini
Sarabhai passed away on 21 January 2016 in Ahmedabad.
--> Mrinalini Sarabhai was one of the
best known faces of Indian classical dance. She was an expert dancer in
Bharatanatyam and Kathakali.
--> She was married to the physicist
Vikram Sarabhai.
--> She received Padma Bhushan in 1992
and Padma Shri in 1965.
3) Uttar Pradesh won
2014-2015 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy:
--> Uttar Pradesh on 20 January 2016 won
its maiden Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy with a 38-run win over two- time champions
Baroda in the final played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
--> It was Uttar Pradesh’s ninth
straight win in the tournament, including five in the preliminary league phase
and three more in the super league stage.
4) Ravi Chellam Takes Charge
As Head Of Greenpeace India:
--> Noted environmentalist Ravi Chellam
has assumed charge as the executive director of Greenpeace India on 20 January
2016.
--> Chellam succeeds former Executive
Director Samit Aich, who had resigned in June 2015.
5) PM Narendra Modi released
book titled The Z Factor written by Subhash Chandra:
--> The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on
20 January 2016 released a book titled The Z Factor: My Journey as the Wrong
Man at the Right Time in New Delhi.
--> The book is the autobiography of the
promoter of Essel/ Zee Group Subhash Chandra.
6) PM Modi to Flag Off
Mahamana Express:
--> Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set
to flag off Mahamana superfast express from Dreka ground on his visit to
Varanasi on 22 January 2016.
--> The train has been named Mahamana
Express after Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya, the founder of the Banaras Hindu
University (BHU).
--> It will run between Varanasi and
Delhi via Lucknow thrice a week.
7) Three northeastern states
celebrate their Foundation Days:
--> Three northeastern states of
Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya on 21 January 2016 organised numerous programmes
and events to celebrate their Foundation Days.
--> Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted
the people of Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya on their statehood days.
