1) Petrol
price hiked by Rs 2.35 per litre, diesel by 50 paise.
2) Delhi
gang-rape case: Juvenile held guilty for rape and murder, awarded 3-year
sentence by Juvenile Justice Board (JJB). This is the first judgement in the
gang-rape case that created a nationwide outrage.
3) Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh discussed issues of mutual interest with Bhutanese
Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay who is on avisit to India.
4) New
Companies Bill has received President's assent, that will make it into a law
replacing the nearly six-decade old regulations that govern corporates in the country.

4) National Sports Awards were presented to the
country's top athletes and coaches with shooter Ronjan Sodhi getting the Rajiv

first defense satellite GSAT-7 launched successfully from Kourou in South
America on a European Ariane 5 launcher.

reached finals of 9th Asia Cup Hockey tournament after defeating Malaysia 2-0
in the semifinal. India will play South Korea in the summit clash on 01
September 2013. With this win India
assured of a berth in next year's World Hockey Cup in Netherland. With the loss
to Korea in semi, it will also be the first time Pakistan will not feature in
the World Cup since it started in Barcelona back in 1971.

K Sarraf appointed as new Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC (Oil and
Natural Gas Corporation).

Bank becomes the first bank to launch Electronic Passbook. This helps the
customers to view their transactions in smart phones.
5) India's
economy grew at 4.4 per cent in the April-June 2013 quarter, the slowest
quarterly rate in last 4 years.
6) N R Narayana Murthy has stepped down as
chairman of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) after taking
charge as executive chairman of Infosys.
7) India
became the first nation to fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to Australia as Air
India's first commercial flight landed in Australia.

Munich clinches UEFA Super Cup beating Chelsea 5-4 on penalties.
1) National Sports Day celebrated across
India. It was celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian hockey
legend Dhyan Chand.
2) The Land Acquisition Bill passed in Lok
Sabha. Most important feature of the bill is that it requires developers to get
the consent of up to 80 per cent of people whose land is acquired for private projects.
For public-private partnerships, the approval of 70 per cent of landowners is
mandatory.

arrested near India-Nepal Border.
3) Government has set up a 7-member Tax
Administration Reform Commission (TARC) which will be headed by Parthasarathi

1) Country remembered Rajiv Gandhi on 69th
birth anniversary. He served as the
sixth Prime Minister of India from 1984--1989.
2) Three bills relating to the first
national women's university, an aviation university and an aviation authority
were introduced in the Lok Sabha. Both the Women's University and the Aviation
University will be setup in Rae Bareli.

Rajiv Gandhi National Sadhbhavna Award.
4) Ambitious Food security scheme launch by
Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on the occasion of Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi
Birthday. Delhi became the first state
to clear the scheme.
1) Rupee breached 63-mark a dollar to end
at record low of 63.13, recording the decade's worst single-day fall of 148
paise.
2) ISRO called off GSLV-D5 launch with just
an hour to go before the launch as a "leak" had been detected in fuel
tank. GSLV-D5, powered by an indigenous cryogenic engine, was to launch
telecommunication satellite GSAT-14 from Sriharikota.
3) A train killed at least 35 pilgrims
crossing a railway track in Dhamara station, 180 km east of Patna, the capital
of Bihar.

Countdown for launch of GSLV-D5 begins. It will be launched at 4.50pm on 19
August 2013 and will carry telecommunication satellite GSAT-14. The launch is
crucial for the nation due to use of an indigenous cryogenic engine as the
upper stage. The first attempt to use an indigenous cryogenic engine on April
15, 2010 to power GSLV-D3 was a failure.

3) Usain Bolt won his third gold medal of
the 14th IAAF World Championships when he led Jamaica to the gold in the 4 x100
metres relay.
4) A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's new book “My

he says that he failed in his dream of becoming pilot.
5) Usain Bolt equalled the record for the
most gold medals in world championship.
It was his eighth world gold medal when he anchored the Jamaican 4x100m
relay team to victory. It means Bolt has joined American women’s 200m
specialist Allyson Felix, and retired US track stars Carl Lewis and Michael
Johnson who, including relays, have all won eight world championship gold
medals.

submarine INS Sindhurakshak sank with 18 crewmen after explosion early in the
morning at the high-security naval dockyard in Mumbai.
