pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on 144th birth anniversary: Nation today
remembered Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his 144th birth anniversary with top
leaders paying floral tributes at his memorial here. Country also today
celebrated the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri.
2) International
Day of Non-Violence Observed: United Nations General Assembly announced on
15 June 2007 that it adopted a resolution which declared that October 2(Gandhi
Jayanti) will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.
National
1) Cabinet
withdraws ordinance on convicted lawmakers: Union Cabinet on Wednesday
decided to withdraw the controversial ordinance on convicted lawmakers. Government
has withdrawn the controversial ordinance on convicted lawmakers with the
Congress Core Group debating the matter in the wake of Rahul Gandhi’s denunciation
of the Cabinet move last week.
2) Rajya Sabha member and Congress leader
Rasheed Masood was on Tuesday sentenced to four years in jail by a Delhi court
in a corruption case, becoming the first MP to lose his seat after a recent
Supreme Court judgment had removed the immunity for convicted lawmakers.
3) National Green Tribunal on Tuesday
pulled up the Environment Ministry for not filing its final report on
recommendations of two panels set up to study environmental sensitivity and
ecological significance of the Western Ghats, saying better standards were
expected from it.
International
1) Vladimir
Putin nominated for 2014 Nobel Peace Prize: Russian President Vladimir
Putin has been nominated for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize by a Russian advocacy group
for his key role in preventing a US missile strike on Syria and initiatives to
dismantle Damascus’ chemical weapons. In 1990, the then President of the USSR Mikhail
Gorbachev received the Nobel Peace Prize.

shutdown enters second day; Obama slams Republicans: With both Democrats
and Republicans sticking to their stands on a new budget pushing the shutdown into
the second day today, President Barack Obama has blamed a “reckless” opposition
for the latest financial crisis that has forced up to one million workers off
the job.
3) Key
part of US health reform launched despite shutdown: A key stage of
President Barack Obama’s drive to offer cheaper health insurance to millions of
Americans began on Tuesday, despite a Government shutdown over Republican opposition
to the plan.

1) World
Cup trophy will remain in subcontinent: Tendulkar:- Iconic batsman Sachin
Tendulkar believes defending champions India are favourites to retain the ICC Cricket
World Cup title in 2015 and exuded confidence that the trophy will remain in
the subcontinent.
2) Wanted
to become a soldier, became cricketer: Dhoni:- Indian captain Mahendra
Singh Dhoni aspired to be a soldier but says, destiny intervened to make him a cricketer,
he said in an interview.
Banking/Economy
1) Canara
Bank launches online window to open SB accounts: Canara Bank, Kerala
Circle, has thrown open an online facility to open savings bank accounts ‘free
of hassles.’ Anybody with access to Internet can apply from anywhere in the
country for the facility, according to G. Sreeram, general manager, Kerala
circle, Canara Bank.
2) All the wholesale commodity markets,
including bullion and metal, were closed today on account of ‘Gandhi Jayanti’.
3) State
Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) opened four all-woman branches: State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) on Wednesday
opened four all-woman branches in the country, one each at Visakhapatnam,
Salem, Bangalore and Pune, according to K. Ramesh Babu, Deputy General Manager
in charge of the Visakhapatnam zone.

LPG cylinders to be available at petrol pumps: Cooking gas (LPG) will now
be available at select petrol pumps in metro cities after the oil ministry has
allowed sale of small 5kg cylinders at retail outlets.

IRCTC earns Rs 29cr from food business:
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has earned Rs 29
crore from its 80 non- railway catering outlets across the country in 2012-13,
a jump of Rs 18 crore compared to previous year.
6) Govt
plans cut in non-plan spending; fiscal gap to be met: Chidambaram: As the fiscal deficit numbers reached
three-fourths of the budget estimate in the first five months of the fiscal,
finance minister P Chidambaram has said the government is planning to trim
non-plan expenditure to meet the fiscal deficit target of 4.8 per cent for the
current financial year.
